Dick Roches first attempt at a Dail seat in 1987. He won a seat. Nothing much to it only a lovely picture of Dick and a few other bibs and bobs.
John McManus- Workers Party- 1985 LE November 2, 2009
John McManus was a high profile and important member of The Workers Party, he is married to Liz McManus (in 1985 John McManus would have been a far more important political figure than Liz).
The ERDO report refers to the ‘Eastern Region Settlement Strategy 2011’ report from 1985. Presumably it envisaged Longford and Cavn as being in the Dublin commuter belt, or hinterland as it would have been known back then.
Lots of local stuff from the North Wicklow area which may be of interest to those that know the area.
Roisin Shortall -Labour -1997 Dublin North West
Plenty of good facts about 1997 here.
The Childrens allowance was £39, its now €166
‘84% of students now finish second level’ -Whats the figure now?
Water charges and Residential Property Tax both scrapped look to be on the way back.
Other bits of interest there too.
Fianna Fail National Collection 1985. November 1, 2009
Fianna Fail are gathering their war chest for the 1985 local elections…
“Please contribute generously to our collectors when they call.” asks Charlie.
At the last elections Fianna Fail were afraid to call to the door looking for your vote….
.. can you imagine them calling to the door looking for your money?
“If you are not at home when they call please post your contribution to Fianna Fail Headquarters ….”
Also “When making your contribution ask the collector for identification”
Nothing as to who to make a Cheque out to? and I cant help but imagine certain individuals ripping open envelopes with glee.

Olga Bennett- ‘Why Me?’- Fianna Fail 1992
1992 and Dubli Central had been dramatically redrawn. Twice Dublin West candidate and Cllr for Ballyfermot Senator Olga Bennett finds herself on the Fianna Fail ticket with Bertie Ahern and Dermot Fitzpatrick.
Despite using the title of Linda Mrtins Eurovision winning song as a slogan she polled 1,087 votes and Aherns healthy surplus wasn’t enough to help herself or Dermot Fitzpatrick over the line.

‘Women in An Ireland Of Equals’- Sinn Fein 2002 GE
Sinn Fein show off all their female candidates sitting and standing happily with a smiling Gerry Adams. The Back of the leaflet covers issues such as equal pay, childcare etc..

Richard Conroy, Mary Gray, Owen Hammond, David Kane- FF -Ballybrack 1985
One of Professor Richard Conroys runs for public office (He served in the Senate). Conroy has been involved in many exploration projects through various companies such as Conroy Diamonds and Gold and also Conroy petroleum.
From David Kanes profile you’ll notice a number of local issues such as Dun Laoghaire Baths that are still contentious.

Ivor Callely 1992 Dublin North Central
From the 1992 General election. A boyish looking Ivor Callely was ‘typical of the new generation of Public Representatives’ and ‘Always at your Service’.

Featuring a cool looking Eamon Gilmore….Workers Party 1991 – ‘Do You Remember 1985?”
Its from the back of a Marian White Leaflet (the lady on the left of the picture). Its eyecatching to say the least.
Colm Breathnach, Denis O’Callaghan and Eamon Gilmore were elected.

All aboard “The Condom Train” – Workers Party Maynooth 1991 September 29, 2009
Its 1991 – Maynooth is rotten with Sex…..
Actually at the time Condoms were difficult to buy, the Virgin Megastore was one of the few places one could get condoms unless one was married.A Condom Machine had been quite a divisive issue in the College, especially considering at the time 15% of the Student body would have been Clerical Students and there would have also been a good number of ‘lay’ Theology students. There had been student Referendums on the issue (I wish I had kept that ‘Self Control – Not Condoms’ poster) and this Workers Party Group ‘Students For Change’ were trying a number of different protests.
The Condom Train was one of them….
Sean Doherty/Mark Killilea Fianna Fail Connaught-Ulster Euro 89
Sean Doherty and Mark Killilea from the 1989 Euro Elections. Killilea was elected. Doherty will always be associated with the phone tapping scandal and later on that interview on Nighthawks’ that led in part to Haugheys downfall…. and yes I did pick the second leaflet off the ground.
(Judge) Pat McCartan- Democratic Left -Dublin North East 1992
Another Judge who had a Political Career was Pat McCartan. Elected initially in 1987 for The Workers Party, he retained his seat in the 1989 General Election.
McCartan was One of the Six TDs that formed Democratic Left in March 1992. This Leaflet is for the Novemver 1992 election where he lost his seat. The list of organisations he is associated with is very much of the time, CND, The Irish Anti Apartheid movement etc. The DLs 7 point plan is there also.
Tony Gregory Letter to Constituents 08 /Maureen O’Sullivan 09
This was sent to me by the wonderfully helpful Maureen O’Sullivan. Its over a year on from the letter and 9 months since Tonys Passing on the 2nd of January. I gather it was his last communication with all his constituents. Gracious and humble as ever.
Maureen O’Sullivans literature has the same picture of herself and the Late Tony Gregory as that on the Gregory Leaflet.
Democratic Left – 1992 Abortion Referendum
The newly formed Democratic Left give the arguments for a No to Abortion, Yes to Travel and Yes to Information. The leaflet also gives a background as to why we had the referendum.
SPUC leaflet from the 1992 Abortion Referendum
As the debate over the X case and the right to information gained momentum, SPUC (Society for the Protection of Unborn Children) put this four page leaflet (complete with graph) out regarding Information. The referendum hadn’t yet been announced, but there was undoubtedly going to be one regarding Abortion Information as well as the other issues.
1992 Abortion Referendum- Pro Life Campaign Flyer
The 1992 abortion referendum had 3 separate ballots. The first regarded Abortion itself. The Second was to do with the Right To Travel and the Third was to do with the Right to Information.
The ‘X’ case led to the referendum. Its odd that they had the referendum date wrong on the leaflet.
Labour Party- Yes to Amsterdam Treaty September 28, 2009
The thing that strikes me when reading this is …
Have the reasons to vote in favour actually happened and if they have ,have they made a positive difference?
are we any closer to a “..just and equal Europe for all”?
