From 1969 an edition of Action, a magazine published by The Sean Heuston Branch of The Labour Party. The branch was based in Dublin North Central and the publication has pieces by Kair Asmal, Michael O’Leary, Jim Barrett, Malachi Heffernan and others.
The National Labour Party were a split from The Labour Party that lasted from 1944 to 1950. The split was due to various factors but mainly that Jim Larkin Snr had been allowed join the party and then selected to run for Labour in 1943, against the wishes of the ITGWU. The National Labour Party felt that Labour Party was overrun with Communists. The differences were finally settled in 1950, when the two parties were serving in Government together.
From the 1970 Dublin South West By-Election a leaflet from Matt Merrigan running for Labour. The By-election came about due to the death of Labour TD Sean Dunne. The leaflet contains a profile of Matt Merrigan, a message from John O’Connell (Labour TD for Dublin South West) , a message from Brendan Corish as well as an endorsement from all the Dublin based Labour TD’s.
Merrigan polled 5,004 votes losing out narrowly to Seán Sherwin of Fianna Fáil. Sean Dunnes widow Cora Dunne also stood in the by-election and this hampered Merrigans chances. Incidentally Sherwin subsequently joined Aontacht Éireann and of course Merrigan was expelled from The Labour Party in 1977 and subsequently was a founder member of The Socialist Labour Party.
