A Report produced in the aftermath of the Abortion Referendum by The Life Institute examining “Why the Referendum was lost” , “How the media , not the Yes campaign repealed the 8th – with Google’s help” , “The Strengths and weaknesses of our fight to Save the 8th”, “The role of the Church in re-establishing a culture of life” and “What we must do now…”
It’s quite an interesting read in that we normally have a lot of post Referendum analysis from the Victorious side and this is from the other side.
It’s 16 pages long so I’ve uploaded it in pdf format here

From the 1992 Abortion Referenda a leaflet from ‘Frontline’ “A Coalition of Organisations dealing with the Issue and Consequences of Unplanned Pregnancy”.
The Coalition consisted of Cherish, Doctors for Freedom of Information, Dublin Well Woman Centre, Irish Family Planning Association, Open Line Counselling, Psychologists for Freedom of Information and The Union of Students of Ireland.
They were urging a No vote in the Abortion Referendum as it was ” a simplistic and ambiguous approach to a complex issue” and were urging a Yes vote for the Right to Travel and Right to Information.

From 1981 a small pamphlet produced by Sinn Fein’s Department of Women’s Affairs entitled “Abortion Ireland”. At the time the holding of an Abortion Referendum was a big issue and led to the first of our Abortion Referendums in 1983.

“In this brief report we have tried to present as many facts as possible on the circumstances behind abortion as an option for women and those who campaign against abortion”

Gerard Casey -Christian Solidarity Party- 1997 October 18, 2009


1997 General Election in Dun Laoghaire and Gerard Casey polls a respectable 2000 votes for the CSP. The Paul O’Donaghue case refered to was regarding education rights for the disabled. Oddly enough it was Justice Rory O’Hanlon who gave the ruling. ( Justice O’Hanlons nephew Paul O’Loughlin has stood a number of times for the CSP.)

SPUC leaflet from the 1992 Abortion Referendum


As the debate over the X case and the right to information gained momentum, SPUC (Society for the Protection of Unborn Children) put this four page leaflet (complete with graph) out regarding Information. The referendum hadn’t yet been announced, but there was undoubtedly going to be one regarding Abortion Information as well as the other issues.

1992 Abortion Referendum- Pro Life Campaign Flyer


The 1992 abortion referendum had 3 separate ballots. The first regarded Abortion itself. The Second was to do with the Right To Travel and the Third was to do with the Right to Information.

The ‘X’ case led to the referendum. Its odd that they had the referendum date wrong on the leaflet.
