In 1987 and 1989 Ronald Smith Ran under the moniker of “GOD-For Bible Readings In The Dail”. This is the story of those campaigns and what happened in between. There is also a short piece on Andrew Treacy who ran in 1985 in Midleton UDC.

In the 1970’s and 80’s the tax burden on PAYE workers was huge. It led to massive protests calling for farmers and self employed to be brought into the Tax net. Growing from those protests was The National Association for the Protection of PAYE Earners (NAPPE). The Tax Reform League became the Political wing of NAPPE and contested the 1987 General Election.

From the 1987 General Election a Leaflet and Poster for Andrew Boylan and John Conlan who were running for Fine Gael in Cavan Monaghan. Andrew Boylan was elected. Due to Tom Fitzpatrick being Ceann Comhairle Cavan Monaghan only had 4 rather than 5 seats available and Fianna Fail did very well winning the other 3 seats.

A Leaflet from Jimmy Leonard,Rory O’Hanlon and John Wilson running for Fianna Fail in Cavan Monaghan from the 1987 General Election. All three were elected, this despite the Constituency being down to effectively a four seater due to Tom Fitzpatrick being Ceann Comhairle.

We also have Charles Haugheys message to the Electorate with details of “The Fianna Fail plan for National Recovery”.

From the 1987 General Election, ‘Ryan Stands on His Record’,  a leaflet from Labour Party TD for Tipperary North John Ryan outlining what had been delivered by the coalition government both Locally and Nationally over the previous five years.
Ryan polled 4,558 votes and missed out on a seat as newcomer Michael Lowry claimed a seat for Fine Gael and Michael O’Kennedy and Michael Smith won seats for Fianna Fail.

Leaflet for John Donnellan, Fintan Coogan, John O’Malley -Fine Gael – Galway West -1987 General Election July 9, 2012


From the 1987 General Election a leaflet for Fine Gael Galway West candidates John Donnellan, Fintan Coogan and John O’Malley. Donnellan was elected.
John Donnellan was on the Galway 3 in a row team that won the All Ireland football title in 1964, 1965 and 1966, He captioned them in 1964. His son Michael Donnellan won two All Ireland medals with Galway.
Fintan Coogan was elected to the Dail in November 1982 but lost his seat in this 1987 election and never regained it.

1987 Michael Moynihan letter to electors about not sending “a voluminous amount of election literature.” – Labour -South Kerry June 20, 2012

A lovely letter to electors from Labour TD for Kerry South Michael Moynihan saying that he wont be sending each voter “a voluminous amount of  election literature.” I think its from the 1987 General Election where Moynihan lost his seat. I may be biased but maybe the lack of election literature was a factor!

 

1987 leaflet from Michael Noonan , Tom O’Donnell -Fine Gael -Limerick East June 10, 2012


From the 1987 General Election a leaflet from Fine Gael candidates Michael Noonan and Tom O’Donnell. With a huge PD vote in Limerick, Noonan held on to the seat he first one in 1981, whilst O’Donnell lost the seat he had held since 1961.
