Paddy Gallagher, Tony Wright – Workers Party 1987 Waterford. December 8, 2009

Paddy Gallagher had briefly been a TD between February and November 1982 when won a seat from Fianna Fails Billy Kenneally.
In November 1982 Fianna Fail won the seat back.It had been felt that Gallagher hadn’t done enough to protect jobs in Waterford.
Aside from Fianna Fail Gallagher was also hit on the left by two Independent candidates, Terry Moroney who had been part of a march from Dungarvan to Dublin protesting against Youth Unemployment and also Thomas Brennan who had been formerly a leading light in the local Labour Party.
Brian O’Shea of Labours vote held steady at around 4% in both the February and November 82 elections.
Tony Wright was added to the 1987 ticket to cover the Dungarvan side of Waterford.

Amongst the policies listed in this 1987 campaign leaflet… The idea of an agricultural Development Authority seemed innovative and, as now, Health and Social Welfare cuts are part of the bigger parties plans. Plenty of other things of interest there also.

We also have the achievements of the Workers Party TDs in the previous Dail.

Jackie Fahey letter and FF candidates (Fahey,Donal Ormonde, Brain Swift) Waterford 1987 October 7, 2009

From the 1987 General Election in Waterford.
A letter from Jackie Fahey who pleads with voters to help him out after the constituency has been redrawn.

Also Profiles of the 3 Candidates, Brian Swift, Donal Ormone and Jackie Fahey.
Brian Swift looks as if hes listed his mundane hobbies to fill space.
Faheys brithplace of Clonmel, County Waterford is still the postal address for some parts of West Waterford, such as The Nire and Ballinamult.  Fahey and Swift won seats for Fianna Fail. That election also marked the election of the then PD Martin Cullen to the Dail and the defeat of Fine Gael TD Eddie Collins who had held a seat since 1969.

Leaflet from Brain O’Shea- Labour Party Waterford 1987 General Election September 13, 2009

Brian O’Shea of the Labour Party from Waterford 1987 .

He wants to “Legalise Local Radio”, we only had the State stations legally broadcasting at that time.
He had plenty of other aspirations there, that have yet to be done.

Martin Cullen- Progressive Democrats- Waterford 1987 September 11, 2009

A young Martin Cullen in 1987. Cullen had been an Independent councillor(as his father had been too) before joining the PDs.
Here in 1987 he was ‘A fighter for Waterford’ …….
Martin was, amongst other things, looking for  ‘……a more Professional Dail with fewer TDs….’
He switched to Fianna Fail after the 1992 General Election.

Leaflet from Noel Ryan- Sinn Fein -Waterford 1987 General Election September 10, 2009

From the 1987 General Election a leaflet from Noel Ryan standing for Sinn Fein in Waterford. Ryan poled 758 votes and failed to win a seat. He also stood in the 1985 and 1991 Local Elections without success.
Sinn Fein used a generic manifesto for all candidates with just the Candidates picture and profile changing.
There would also be a reference to the area in the document too.
Note the ‘Make sure you can vote’ section.  As far as I’m aware no other party carried that in 1987.

Apologies for the middle pages, but I dont think they had my scanner in mind when putting the document together all those years ago.
