A Leaflet from Olaf Tyaransen who was running for The Cannabis Legalisation Party in the 1997 General Election in Dun Laoghaire. He polled 348 votes. Tim Murphy also ran for the party in Cork South Central polling 663 votes.

From the 1997 General Election a leaflet from Máire Kirrane who was running for The National Party which had been founded by Nora Bennis in the wake of her run in the 1994 European Elections. They are now called The Catholic Democrats and Theresa Heaney ran for them in the 2014 European Elections
Máire Kirrane polled 1,169 votes and missed out on a seat.

“The Real Party of The Environment” a leaflet from Michael McDowell of The Progressive Democrats from the 1997 General Election. Despite the leaflet McDowell lost his seat with John Gormley of The Green Party winning a seat instead. As the Greens were making progress in the polls, in elections between 1997 and 2007 all parties tried to show off their environmental credentials.

From the 1997 General Election a “Hello!” magazine style canvass card from Aidan O’Connor who was running for Fine Gael in Kerry South. He polled 3,041 votes and failed to win a seat. After the General Election he was appointed to the Seanad where he served for a number of months until the next Seanad convened.

An Eamon Gilmore Flyer from the 1997 General Election when he was running for the Democratic Left in Dun Laoghaire.
From the 1997 General Election a leaflet from Fianna Fails Mary Hanafin, who was running in Dun Laoghaire. It covers the issues of the time. She was elected.
A lovely newspaper clip I was sent of Jackie Healy Rae ‘surfing the super info highway’ during the 1997 General Election campaign in Kerry South. Healy Rae was elected, topping the poll with 7,220 votes.

From the 1997 General Election a leaflet from Independent candidate Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan. In this his first General Election he polled 548 votes.
From the 1997 General Election a leaflet from Liz McManus who was running for the Democratic Left in Wicklow. Having previously been a Workers Party Councillor, she was first elected to the Dail in 1992 when running for The Democratic Left. In this 1997 Election she polled 5,226 votes and was elected on the 9th count.
The leaflet shows the achievements of the Rainbow Coalition, note the Partnership Works Slogan and request to transfer to our government partners at the bottom of the leaflet.
From the 1997 General Election a leaflet from Fianna Fail candidate Seamus Hughes who was running in Mayo. First elected in 1992, in 1997 Hughes polled 6,791 and lost his seat.

From the 1997 General Election “Dun Laoghaire Newsletter” from then Minister of State for the Marine and Democratic Left TD Eamon Gilmore running in Dun Laoghaire. The leaflet boasts of Water Rates being abolished.
“Water rates were a form of double taxation on PAYE workers and an unsatisfactory way of funding local Councils” said Gilmore. The leaflet also mentions job creating, outside toilets and crime.
In this 1997 election Gilmore polled 7,534 votes and held the seat he first won in 1989.
From the 1997 General Election a leaflet from Fianna Fail TD Michael Smith showing the benefits to Thurles of Fianna Fails time in office until 1994. Smith polled 6,999 votes and was elected.
