Irish Anti Apartheid Movement Posters and Flyers March 9, 2010
A selection of posters from the Irish Anti Apartheid Movement. The address on the posters is that of Kader Asmal , co founder of the IAAM, who later became a minister in South Africas first post apartheid government. The IAAM were founded in 1963 and continued until the early 1990s.
(the following is from a speech made by Louise Asmal about the Irish Anti Apartheid Movement)
“We had very little funding that we did not raise ourselves – and here I should pay tribute to the many musicians who sang for us at concerts, and often turned down lucrative offers to tour South Africa as well. Poets like Seamus Heaney read for us, Sean O’Casey and Samuel Beckett were among the first signatories of a list of playwrights who refused to allow their plays to be performed in South Africa.
But of course it was the sports boycott which aroused the most passion and the most controversy. (1969-’70 Springbok rugby tour – 8000).
In 1984 Mary Manning, a young trade unionist working in a supermarket in Dublin, refused to register the sale of an Outspan grapefruit. She and 10 others who supported her were suspended, and went on strike for three and a half years. For those three and a half years we organized a Saturday picket outside the store, but management refused to respond to our letters and refused to meet us. In 1987 the Irish Government imposed sanctions on South African fruit and produce.”
You will see ‘Outspan’ and ‘Cape’ fruit refered to in one of the posters below.

‘Roscommon Anti Head Shops Group’ flyer 2010 March 8, 2010
Got sent this (Thanks to Liam Byrne) and as its a hot issue I thought I’d post it. Its has some questions and answers, details of whats available and a message to lobby your TD over the issue…
“What is a Head Shop? – Head shops are retail outlets selling psychoactive, mood-altering “legal highs” as well as drugs paraphernalia. They have a variety of quirky names that appeal to young people.”
The Roscommon Anti Head Shops group have protested outside the Dail and have a continuos picket outside the shop in Roscommon. They were featured in a documentary on Head Shops by RTE.

Kerry Public Service Workers Alliance -Anti Government Flyer March 3, 2010
Got sent this and thought it of interest. A flyer from The Kerry Public Service Workers Alliance (http://kpswa.wordpress.com/). It Illustrates succinctly the gripes of many of the lower paid Public Service Workers (and many others too).
Also why would Tom McEllistrim earn more than Jackie Healy-Rae?

(Should anyone have the Black and White anti Healy-Rae poster shown in a report recently I’d love a copy)
‘Peninsula Action Group News’ -1997 proposed Halting Sites in Howth February 19, 2010
A 1997 newsletter from the ‘Peninsula Action Group’ (which there is very little available info on now) ‘a voluntary organisation based on the Howth-Sutton Peninsula which concerns itself with planning issues on the Peninsula‘. They are affiliated with a group called MEAS (which I can’t find anything on) “which is the coordinating body for groups concerned with the development of Halting sites throughout the country and in particular with the existing absence of a transparent consultative process pertaining to Halting sites.”
This issue is dominated by proposals to establish Halting sites in Howth at Windgate Road and the entrance to the Deerpark hotel. Readers are urged to lobby their councillors, TDs and election candidates.
I have a few items from the time where the establishment of halting sites are a very hot topic. Any more info on PAG would be more than welcome.

Self Aid – 17th May 1986 RDS January 5, 2010
Found this in the attic over Christmas, the programme for the Self Aid concert in May 1986. Lets Make it work…
The day itself was great fun, the musical highlights were many.. Rory Gallagher playing ‘Follow Me’ (The theme tune to MT USA)
..and lots more including of course U2s performance of Maggies Farm.
Yet why were all these people there? Why watch were all the people watching?
Unemployment. The political classes, Government and the State weren’t able to provide employment, so maybe a concert would?
Tony Boland and Niall Matthews message is whats relevant (ie a failure of State and political system) for this Blog.
Jobs were promised, the Self Aid Trust was set up …. did it have any long term impact?
Paul Kane – ‘Framed by a Supergrass’ -Irish Anti Extradition Committee 1988 December 21, 2009
Paul Kane was one of the 38 prisoners that escaped the Maze Prision in 1983.Extradition was a big issue in the Republic all throughout the troubles. Despite the quotes from Charles Haughey and Gerry Collins on the back of the leaflet, Paul Kane was extradited in 1989. The Quotes from Haughey and Collins also illustrate how throughout the Troubles Fianna Fails policies shifted to populist Republican ones most often when in opposition.
Others mentioned as awaiting extradition in the leaflet include Dermote Finucance, brother of the late Pat Finucane and former MP and election agent for Bobby Sands, Owen Carron.
The Waterboys/Green Alliance benefit concert Oct 1987 November 26, 2009
Its 1987 and the Waterboys do a benefit concert for the Green Alliance with the proceeds ‘going to finance a Green Road Show which will tour the country..’
The concert itself was in the Olympic Ballroom, a few of the songs from the forthcoming Fishermans Blues were played. I think The Sawdoctors may have been the support.(I’m informed the Benzini Brothers were the support)
A Windscale Fire 30th Anniversary Demo, organised by CND, outside the British Embassy is also advertised.
Not too often Chief Seattle gets quoted in Irish political material either…
Probably a misprint too in “We Greens have a saying ‘THINK GLOBALLY, ACT GLOBALLY’“…. should surely read ‘THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY”
‘Politicians on the Fiddle:Vote Them Out-‘Campaign for Honesty in Politics’ 1991 November 17, 2009
1991 Local Elections and a leaflet from the ‘Campaign for Honesty in Politics’ to Vote Out the Big Parties. As tribunals have shown, they were more than correct about ‘Politicians on the Fiddle’.
I’m not sure who was behind the ‘Campaign for Honesty in Politics’, names such as Michael Smith and Colm MacEochaidh have been suggested, but it may not have been them. (It was in 1995 that the reward was offered that led to the tribunals.)
I had it filed away with Green Party material from Ballybrack if that provides a clue to anyone. The Green Party and The Workers Party were the only ‘Small’ Parties to contest Ballybrack and Blackrock. Sinn Fein contested the Dun Laoghaire ward.
Anyway I’d love to know who was behind the leaflet.
As you can see the issues covered are on the Southside of Dublin. Some of the lands mentioned may have been part of the now infamous ‘Jackson Way’ land. It also illustrates the cynical way councillors were using their vote. Also mentioned is the compensation that councils had to pay developers when they refused planning permission.
