Some nice little bits here. I had forgotten about the proposed Motorway on Clanbrassil Street (Which would probably have the 30 kmh limit now!) also “He is a keen cyclist and has ridden his bicycle coast to coast across the U.S.A.”
Lots of other bibs and bobs about policy and Dublin of the time.
Many thanks to the sender.

‘Secret FF/PD Deals with IRA Killers? NO THANKS’ -Fine Gael 2007 General Election August 27, 2010

Two of a series of ‘NO THANKS’ posters used by Fine Gael in the 2007 General Election Campaign.
The ‘Secret FF/PD Deals with IRA Killers?’ would have referred to the release of Pearse McAuley who had been convicted of the Killing of Garda Gerry McCabe. The backdrop of the prison was I’m sure also a reminder of McDowells Thornton Hall project.
The other dealing with stealth taxes.

From the 2009 local elections Ivor Callelys newsletter. Its a promo for himself and his son Ronan Callely who was running for Dublin City Council in the Clontarf ward. Callely junior wasn’t elected.
The contents of the newsletter , given recent revelations, is somewhat ironic.

On Savings and Investments Ivor suggests ‘you seek professional advice before you make any decision.’ Difficulties with Mortgages are also covered.

There is a section on ‘HOW TO COPE THROUGH DIFFICULTIES
There are tips from Callely junior on ‘Looking for a job‘, There is also mentions of “Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS)”
the final call is one for Ivor to organise ‘House Meetings‘, ‘The impact of the current difficulties is real and the answer to our difficulties is not beyond our reach.’

“Fianna Fail Is Good For Dublin” – 1992 General Election Dublin Manifesto July 21, 2010

From the 1992 General Election a pamphlet “Fianna Fail is Good For Dublin”. It was a slimmed down version of their Manifesto tailored to Dublin.
The “booklet sets out some of our achievements over the past few years, and some of the plans we have developed to continue this work”.

Amongst the items were a “£750 million Job Fund”. Whats interesting here is that it advocated direct state investment by setting up ” a new holding company to invest in job creation”. Plenty of other items of interest too including the introduction of Night buses and radio stations FM104 and 98FM.

Dustin The Turkey -“Vote Dustin No. 1 …. Bringing The Olympics to Termonfeckin” Poster July 16, 2010

First off many thanks to the great Turkey himself for sending this (and other items) on.
Dustins political career is of legend proportions.
In various elections, despite Dustin not officially standing, ballot papers with his name on them have supposedly outpolled some candidates on the ballot.
He has of course met many politicians in his time, even managing to secure an exclusive interview with George Mitchell (the US special envoy to Northern Ireland during the Peace Process)…. only to ask him about his days with WHAM…
The idea of “Bringing The Olympics to Termonfeckin” was inspired by the then Lord Mayor Gay Mitchells suggestion of Dublin hosting the Olympics.

Dick Roche Newsletter -Fianna Fail -1989 General Election Wicklow June 28, 2010

From the 1989 General Election a newsletter from Fianna Fails Dick Roche running in Wicklow. Dick Roche won a seat.
Having been elected in 1987 the Haughey led government, despite support from Fine Gael in the guise of the Tallaght Strategy decided to go to the country for a bigger mandate.
Like today many of the problems dated back to when Fianna Fail had previously been in government, especially the policies of the 1977 to 1981 Fianna Fail Government.
Similar enough to today we get the blurb of problems being tackled although ‘the support and encouragement received from the Irish people‘ isn’t quite as available as it was then.
