A leaflet given out by the Labour Party in the 2007 General Election Campaign called ‘The story of Labour’s Rose’.
James Larkin, James Connolly and Sean O’Casey all get a mention here.
‘Of Larkin, O’Casey said he was a man who would as soon put a rose in a vase as bread on the table.

Mary Banotti -Fine Gael -1997 Presidential Election March 11, 2010


From the 1997 Presidential Election, Fine Gael candidate Mary Banotti. Mary Banotti polled almost 30% of the vote in a contest won by Mary McAleese. In the wake of Mary Robinsons success, of the five candidate (an unprecedented number) four were women, Dana, Mary McAleese, Adi Roche and Mary Banotti with Derek Nally the sole male candidate.
Mary Banotti had both tradition, being in the Michael Collins bloodline and a career of caring to do well. Also even in 1997 it was unusual for a politician to announce they were separated.

Frank Chambers- Fianna Fail -Mayo 2007 March 1, 2010


From the 2007 General election in Mayo, Fianna Fail candidate Frank Chambers. In a tight contest it was always going to be hard for Chambers to win a seat, especially with Beverly Cooper-Flynn running as an Independent.
Of the 3 Fianna Fail candidates only Dara Callery was elected.

Pat Cox -Progressive Democrats -1992 Cork South Central February 23, 2010


The then Progressive Democrat  Pat Cox from the 1992 General Election in Cork South Central where he won a seat.
Pat Cox left RTE to run for the Progressive Democrats in the 1989 European Elections where he topped the poll in Munster. This leaflet is from his 1992 Dail Campaign.
In 1994 it was expected that he would remain in the Dail, instead he took on former Party Leader Des O’Malley and held his MEP seat as an Independent. In Brussels he was elected president of the ELDR group in the European Parliament in 1998 and in 2002 he was elected President of the European Parliament. He continued in that role until 2004.
He is now President of ‘The European Movement’.
There are some awaiting his return to Irish Politics.

Sam Carroll -Fine Gael – Glencullen 1991 LE February 21, 2010


From the 1991 Local Elections Fine Gael candidate Sam Carroll. Carroll failed to win a seat in the Glencullen ward.
Sam Carroll is a well known face around the Foxrock/Deansgrange area.

Pictures of two posters from Pat McHugh and John Coulthard of the Northern Ireland Labour Party from the 1970 Westminister Elections. (apologies for poor quality).
Pat McHugh stood in North Antrim where Ian Paisley won the seat. It was the first time Paisley was elected to Westminister.
John Coulthard stood in South Belfast where the Unionist candidate Rafton Pounder easily won the seat.

Paddy Kavanagh ‘Free Draw’ -Fine Gael -Enniscorthy 2004 Local Elections February 12, 2010


From the 2004 local elections Fine Gael candidate Paddy Kavanagh. He was standing in the Enniscorthy LEA for Wexford County Council and for Enniscorthy UDC. He was elected to the UDC.
Paddy Kavanagh had been co-opted onto the council to replace Ivan Yates.
I wonder how many entries he received for the competition, the draw took place a week before the election. Given the size of the electorate there must have been good odds on winning. He was also looking to see what the most important issues for voters were.

From the 2009 Dublin South By Election. A larger version George Lee election flyer. Contains a now Brilliant message from Enda Kenny.

George Enda writes  “…..has a proven and outstanding economic ability, a willingness to stand up to vested interests…” (Vested interests Like top FG people trying to keep their own patches?)
A Longer message from George Lee and lovely picture where Olivia Mitchell and Alan Shatter ‘endorse’ Goeorge Lee.
This time with a longer message from George Lee and also a longer message from Enda Kenny.
George Lee having resigned as RTEs economics correspondent was a huge capture for Fine Gael. He topped the poll and got in on the first count.

He resigned his seat on the 8th of February 2010, less than a year after his election.

From the 2009 Dublin South by-election Fine Gael poll topper George Lee. Lee at the time RTEs economics correspondent was a huge capture for Fine Gael.

I wonder would Enda be as enthused now? I always felt that Alan Shatter and Olivia Mitchell were grimmacing in the photo with George.

Tomás MacGiolla -‘Dublin People’ -Workers Party Paper- 1994 European Elections. February 4, 2010


The Late Tomás MacGiolla from the 1994 European Elections. Although not winning a seat, he polled respectably.
This is a freesheet given out during the campaign. It highlights The Workers Party policy on the EU.  From the paper you can see how proud Tomás MacGiolla was to have been Lord Mayor of Dublin . The issues of the day both European and domestic are shown too. The real isssue though was jobs….

‘Good Morning Voter from your Local Representative’, Bertie Aherns letter that arrived on door steps on Election day 2007 in Dublin Central.
Bertie writes that “Its a choice whether Ireland goes forward or back, between costed policies that are working or a gamble with Irelands future”.
Was it not Bertie that gambled with Irelands future?
Bertie also shows where his preference lies regarding Cyprian Brady.

Tim Cotter -Fianna Fail- Celbridge LEA- 1991 local Elections February 1, 2010


The ‘Newsletter’ of Fianna Fail candidate Tim Cotter in the 1991 Local elections for Kildare County Council, Celbridge LEA. Cotter failed to win a seat.
Plenty in teh Newsletter though. A nice message from Charles J Haughey at the back.
Cotter is pictured canvassing happy looking workers at the INTEL plant. He also has shots with such luminaries as the then Lord Mayor of Dublin Michael Donnelly, Michael O’Kennedy, Bertie Ahern, Mary O’Rourke, Seamus Brennan and Ray Burke. Its a whos who of Fianna Fail at the time.
The boot is put into Labour too over Service Charges.

Liam Cosgrave – Fine Gael – Dun Laoghaire 1989


The now disgraced former Fine Gael TD Liam T. Cosgrave from the 1989 General Election in Dun Laoghaire.
From a Fine Gael dynasty, Liam T Cosgrave is son of former Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave and also grandson of another former Fine Gael leader W. T. Cosgrave.
Having lost his seat in 1987 Liam Cosgrave again failed to win a seat in 1989 despite having won the fourth most first preferences in a five seat constituency.
In 2003 he resigned from Fine Gael, after evidence in the Mahon tribunal heard that Cosgrave had accepted illegal payments from property developers in return for voting to rezone property in Dublin. In 2005, Cosgrave pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to disclose to the Standards in Public Office Commission a political donation of £2,500 received from lobbyist Frank Dunlop. He was sentenced to 75 hours Community Service.

Mary Upton- Labour Party -2002 Dublin South Central


From the 2002 General Election, Labour Candidate Mary Upton defends the seat she won in the by-election in 1999. The By-Election was caused by the passing of her Brother Pat Upton. Amongst the photos in the Leaflet are herself and Mick McCarthy.
