Tony Williams-Progressive Democrats -2004 Local Elections Rathmines May 11, 2010


From the 2004 Local Elections, Progressive Democrat candidate Tony WIlliams running in the Rathmines Ward.
Despite polling over 1000 votes Tony Williams failed to win a seat.
The PDs are taking credit for ‘preserving Lansdowne Road as a major national sports centre here in Dublin City’.
They were still getting mileage from Mary Harneys ban on Smokey coal 14 years earlier.

Dermot Lacey -Labour Party – 1999 Local Elections Pembroke April 16, 2010


From the 1999 Local Elections in the Pembroke ward, Labour Party candidate Dermot Lacey. Dermot Lacey was elected.
He served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from July 2002 until July 2003. He has expressed an interest in being the Labour candidate for the directly elected Lord Mayor of Dublin, should the contest ever happen.

Claire Wheeler -Green Party -1991 Local Elections -Pembroke April 13, 2010


From the 1991 Local Elections, Green Party candidate Claire Wheeler running in the Pembroke Ward. Claire Wheeler polled 1,060 votes and was elected.
She was joined on Dublin City Council by Green Councillors, John Gormley, Ciaran Cuffe and Siadbh O’Neill.

Jim O’Callaghan -Fianna Fail -2004 LE Rathmines. April 8, 2010


From May 2004 a Newsletter produced by Fianna Fail candidate in the Rathmines Ward Jim O’Callaghan. Jim O’Callaghan, brother of RTEs Miriam O’Callaghan, failed to win a seat, he also missed out in the 2007 General Election. He did however win a seat in the 2009 Local election when amongs the competition was Garrett Tubridy, brother of RTEs Ryan Tubridy.
The Leaflet itself contains local issues and also a detailed profile of the candidate and his family.
Also a small bit urging a number 2 vote for party colleague Michael Donnelly and also to vote for Eoin Ryan in the European Elections.

From the 2002 General Election campaig n in Dublin South East, the then Labour Party leader Ruairi Quinn. Quinn was comfotably elected.
The image of Ruair Quinn waving whilst Kevin Humphreys, Mary Freehill and Dermot Lacey stay cool and calm is one I’ve always liked.

‘Good Morning Voters of Dublin South-East’ -Michael McDowell -Progessive Democrat -1992 General Election March 24, 2010


From 1992 Progressive Democrat Michael McDowell bids to regain his seat, won in 1987, lost in 1989, in Dublin South East. Its polling day and this is has arrived overnight. It’s a practice that isn’t as prevalent as it used to be.

Joe Doyle, William Egan -Fine Gael -1991 Local Elections- Pembroke March 22, 2010


From the 1991 Local Elections, Fine Gael candidates for the Pembroke Ward, the late Joe Doyle and William Egan.
Joe Doyle was elected. Note how in the ‘interest of the environment’ they weren’t using any posters which was unusual at the time (and indeed still is).
Joe Doyle, a former Sacristan, had two terms in the Dail, from November 1982 until 1987 and again from 1989 to 1992. He was also elected to the Seanad for two terms.

‘ahead…. with Hederman’ -Carmencita Hederman- Independent 1985 Local Elections Pembroke. March 5, 2010


From the 1985 local Elections in the Pembroke Ward, Independent Community Candidate Carmencita Hederman. The picture is of her going over the ‘new’ East Link bridge.
Carmencita Hederman was first elected to the council in 1974 and served until 1999. She was Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1987–88 during the Dublin Millennium celebrations. In 1989 she was elected to the Seanad for the University of Dublin Seat and served one term.
The Leaflet below gives an outline of her activities and career.
The picture on the bottom of the leaflet is of a building at the bottom of Eglington road (opposite Donnybrook Rugby ground). There was controversy when the building was built and given planning permission. This was then added to by the fact that once built the building could not find a tenant for a long period of time.
Her daughter Wendy Hederman was elected to the council for the Progressive Democrats in 2004.

Noel Whelan , Eoin Ryan -Fianna Fail- 1997 GE Dublin South East February 26, 2010


From the 1997 General Election, the now Irish Times Pundit Noel Whelan with running Mate Eoin Ryan on the Fianna Fail Ticket in Dublin South East. Ryan was elected.
A fairly detailed version of ‘New Kid on the block’ Whelans career, which is  impressive.  At 28 he was the parties youngest candidate in Dublin.

‘Many young people are also deeply concerned about escalating house costs and the current over heating of the Dublin property market….’

From the 1987 General Election in Dublin South East. The fianna Fail candidates of Mary McAleese, Gerard Brady, Michael Donnelly and Eoin Ryan.
Gerard Brady won a seat. (result at electionsireland.org)  
The profiles of all the candidates have items of interest.

For instance Mary McAleese was a member of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Delegation to the New Ireland Forum. Who remembers her now from her time on RTE Radio and Television. Eoin Ryan is a graduate of Kildalton Horticultural College.

From the 2007 General election in Dublin South East, Independent candidate Peter O’Sullivan. Despite sharing a name with a famous racing comentator, Peter O’Sullivan received  34 votes.
His policies seem decent enough. Hard to find fault with many of his sentiments such as ‘No sell off of StLukes in Rathgar, Better bus services, DART/LUAS shuttle along the canal …’

Lucinda Creighton From the 2007 General Election in Dublin South East. A Fine Gael Stronghold in Garret Fitzgeralds time, Fine Gael won no seat there in 2002. In the end it was Michael McDowells seat that Creighton took.

Ruairi Quinn “Achievements in Difficult Times” -1987 GE Dublin SE January 5, 2010


From 1987 Ruairi Quinn outlines the achievements of the Labour Government and himself in the previous four years, especially his time as Minister for Labour and Public Service.
It’s quite a good read,especially the final page which has examples of the Social Employment Scheme (SES) –which he set up in action. Also there is the work done by AnCO on the renovation and restoration of the Irish College at Louvain.
The “Did you know?..” lists some of the worthy achievements of Labour in government…. alas one “Politics have been taken out of planning” didn’t last too long.

Noel O’Gara -The Planning Reform Party 2007 GE December 19, 2009


The 2007 Manifesto of Noel O’Gara, current owner of Dartmouth Square. He is the only Candidate to have stood for The Planning Reform Party. In 2007 he stood in Dublin South East(27 votes), Laois Offaly (45 votes), Longford Westmeath (84 votes), Roscommon South Leitrim (66 votes) and
he also stood in the 2009 Dublin South by-election (172 votes).
Noel O’Gara is not a fan of planning permission.
