From the 1992 General Election a newsletter from Michael McDowell of The Progressive Democrats running in Dublin South East. He polled 4504 votes and regained the seat he lost in 1989.

A newsletter from NUI Senator Michael McDowell which I gather is being distributed in Dublin Bay South.
Many thanks to the sender.
A leaflet from former Tánaiste, Minister, Attorney General and leader of the Progressive Democrats , Michael McDowell who is running for the Seanad on the NUI panel.
His Website
“The Real Party of The Environment” a leaflet from Michael McDowell of The Progressive Democrats from the 1997 General Election. Despite the leaflet McDowell lost his seat with John Gormley of The Green Party winning a seat instead. As the Greens were making progress in the polls, in elections between 1997 and 2007 all parties tried to show off their environmental credentials.
Many thanks to the sender.
“Come Join The Party!” a Progressive Democrat recruitment ad from a 2007 PD newspaper ‘New Ireland’. If you wanted to join the party you could mail Michael McDowell directly at michael@progressiveDemocrats.ie !
From the Seanad Referendum Campaign a “Say No To The Power Grab” Leaflet published by Michael McDowell. McDowell was of course previously in favour of Seanad Abolition.
Many thanks to the sender.
From a 1992 General Election Leaflet from Progressive Democrat Michael McDowell where he is committed to amongst other things.. ‘Abolish The Senate’. I’ve also included a piece from one of his 1987 leaflets where ‘Terminate the Senate’ is mentioned.
From the 1979 Local Elections a leaflet for Fine Gael candidates Michael McDowell, Joe Doyle, Tommy Woods and Finola Gill (who later married John Bruton). Joe Doyle was elected. McDowell polled 1271 votes, Gill 960 and Woods 497.
McDowell was later a founder member and became leader of The Progressive Democrats.

From the 1997 General Election a flyer from Michael McDowell of the Progressive Democrats running in Dublin South East. In the leaflet he attacks the “The Tax and Spend Rainbow?” the rainbow being The Rainbow Coalition of Fine Gael, Labour and Democratic Left. He also mentions a 4 and a half party patchwork Rainbow that would have included The Greens and Independents.
Had previously posted the cover of this without realising that there was a Pizza Menu and Desert Menu with it also. A kind soul sent me the full leaflet and here it is.
From the Young Progressive Democrats “We Deliver”.
I was sent these gems (many thanks), I’m not sure if there was anything on the backs of them. Dail Wars and Pizza Delivery, totally bizarre. Mary Harney as Luke Skywalker!
I gather that they were produced by the Young Progressive Democrats around 2005.
From the 2007 General Election a leaflet from Progressive Democrat Candidate and Leader Michael McDowell running in Dublin South East.
A few years on the words look very ill chosen.
“Dont Gamble With Your Family’s Future -Vote No 1 Michael McDowell”
The back of the flyer with its ‘Long Lasting Prosperity’ looks like almost like a joke now.
Another Letter from the Christian Solidarity Party candidate Conor O’Donoghue that appeared in a pamphlet produced for the 2009 Local Elections in Limerick.
The letter is posted along with a page from the pamphlet that contains what was possibly his election flyer.
OPEN LETTER TO MR. MICHAEL McDOWELL T.D. MINISTER FOR JUSTICE
The opening line is especially good given its recipient.
As you are apparently the cutting edge of the Political Establishment’s onslaught against anything of Christian value in Ireland today, please permit me to put it to you that your brilliant legal mind is being used by powers much stronger and more intelligent than yourself
From 1992 Progressive Democrat Michael McDowell bids to regain his seat, won in 1987, lost in 1989, in Dublin South East. Its polling day and this is has arrived overnight. It’s a practice that isn’t as prevalent as it used to be.
Over his career Michael McDowell never held his seat for more than one Dail term. (Michael McDowell at electionsireland.org)
From the 2007 General election. The Progressive Democrats quote Labour, Sinn Fein and Green Politicians to illustrate what they would do if a Rainbow Left Coalition got in.
Amongst the quotes
Pat Rabbitte – “It’s my job to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable”
Gerry Adams- “We are actively looking to be in government after the election”
Green Party Policy on housing -“The Green Party wants to apply commercial rates to second homes and to investment properties”
Up until 2004 if your child was born in Ireland, you were entitled to citizenship. It was felt that this left the country open to people coming into the country to give birth so they could automatically gain citizenship. It was passed by 79% Yes to 21% No.
Michael McDowell was Minister for Justice at the time.
A fresh faced former PD party leader Michael McDowell, in the 1987 General Election. Contains a profile of him, a message from Dessie O’Malley about him and of course a message from Michael McDowell himself. His pastimes included ‘reading and running’.
Garret Fitzgerald topped the poll on the day, with Ruairi Quinn, Gerard Brady and Michael McDowell all winning seats too. Amongst the vanquished were Mary McAleese, Eoin Ryan, Aengus O Snodaigh and Joe Doyle.
This is the front page of a PD paper type manifesto from 1987.(Apologies for the scan but its two scans put together like a jigsaw, so I’ll do the rest of the pages at a later date). You may need to click on the image to see the full details
Whats brilliant is the following bill put forward in 1986 which included the following….
-Ending pensions to sitting TDs
-Terminating the Senate
-Reducing the number of TDs from 166 to 120
-Reducing the number of junior ministers from 15 to 7 …etc
Does that ring a bell anyone?
