Vincent Kenny -Fianna Fail -2004 Local Elections Terenure Rathfarnham June 23, 2010


From the 2004 Local Elections a leaflet for Fianna Fail candidate Vincent Kenny running in Terenure Rathfarnham.
Kenny, who had stood as an Independent with emphasis on Environmental issues in 1999, had been co-opted to replace Ann Ormonde in 2003. He failed to win a seat in 2004. In the 2009 Local Elections he stood again as an Independent without success.

Jim Mitchell ‘Straight Talking’ Canvass Card -Fine Gael -1999 European Elections Dublin


From the 1999 European Elections in Dublin a Flyer for Fine Gael candidate the late Jim Mitchell. Mitchell missed out on the final count just as he did in the 1994 European Elections.
Amongst the items mentioned are the Dail Public Accounts Committee and Supporting “a formal Irish role in European Security and defence“.

‘Fianna Fail Are Criminals, Drink Drivers & Tax Cheats’ Poster – Working Class Action 2003


A ‘Fianna Fail Are Criminals, Drink Drivers & Tax Cheats’ Poster from 2003 produced by Working Class Action (WCA).
These posters were produced in reaction to Bertie Ahern stating that people who opposed the bin Tax were ‘Spongers’.
They appeared all over Dublin at the time, although many were allegedly torn down (possibly FF or indeed souvenir hunters).
Working Class Action were a Left Wing Dublin based campaign group. They were active in the Anti Bin Tax campaign. Amongst those involved in Working Class Action were Cieran Perry who was elected to Dublin City Council in 2009 and Joe Mooney. Both stood in the 2004 Local Elections.

 

Betty Reeves -Green Alliance -1985 Local Elections Blackrock


From the 1985 local elections leaflet for Green candidate the late Betty Reeves. Betty Reeves was a founder member of the Green Party and was elected to the council in 1991.
It is a generic leaflet where the candidates name is stamped on it.

From the 2009 Dublin Central By-Election a leaflet from Immigration Control Platform candidate Pat Talbot. Pat Talbot polled 614 votes.
The leaflet focuses on amongst other things Immigration policy and the entry of Turkey into the EU.

Another Eamon Gilmore Leaflet, this time Eamon Gilmore running in the 1992 General Election for Democratic Left in Dun Laoghaire.
The Suave Polo Necked Posing Gilmore was elected.
On the reverse is the Democratic Lefts Seven Point Action Plan which included the creation of a Ministry for Women…

Noel Davern , Martin Mansergh – Fianna Fail -Tipperary South 2002 General Election


From the 2002 General Election a leaflet for Fianna Fail candidates Noel Davern and Martin Mansergh running in Tipperary South.
Noel Davern was elected. Martin Mansergh failed to win a seat but was elected in 2007.
A detailed biography of both candidates as well as a long message from Bertie and some local achievements.
Manserghs time in the Public Sector is quite interesting.

From 2005 when  Irish Ferries attempted (successfully) to replace their crews with cheaper non unionised Labour.  Demands for lower workers pay from employers, wage deflation and so on.
This leaflet from the Socialist Party ‘No To The Race To The Bottom’ is opposed to such measure.

From 2002 Paul McGraths Irish World Cup Fixture Guide -Fine Gael -2002 GE June 20, 2010


The 2002 General Election was held on the 17th of May. World Cup Fever wasn’t quite at its height as the Roy Keane Saipan saga didn’t fully start until the 21st of May.
This is a card from Fine Gaels Paul McGrath with his details on the front and the world cup fixtures on the reverse. A number of candidates produced similar cards.
The TDs namesake had retired in 1998.

Kathleen Lynch -The Workers Party -1987 GE Cork South Central


From the 1987 General Election, A leaflet for The Workers Party candidate for Cork South Central Kathleen Lynch. She failed to win a seat but polled 2,349 votes.
Elected to Cork Corporation in 1985, this was her first General Election. It wasn’t until the 1994 by-election ,running for The Democratic Left ,that she won a Dail seat.

From the 1999 Local Elections for Offaly County Council. A Leaflet for the Fianna Fail candidates Una Collison, Joe Dooley, Jim McNamara and Pat Moylan running in Birr LEA.
Joe Dooley and Pat Moylan were elected.
Pat Moylan has also served in the Seanad and has held the position of Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann.

Leaflet for Pádraig Mac Lochlainn -Sinn Fein -2009 European Elections North West


From the 2009 European Elections a leaflet for Sinn Fein candidate Pádraig Mac Lochlainn running in North-West. Pádraig Mac Lochlainn polled 45,515 votes, just over 9% of the total poll and failed to win a seat.
He is seen as a contender in Donegal North East at the next General Election. In 2007 he was second on the first count but failed to attract sufficient transfers to put him over the line.

Andrews, Goulding, Hammond, O’Donoghue Canvass card -Fianna Fail -Dun Laoghaire 1982 June 18, 2010


From the November 1982 General Election a canvass card for Fianna Fail candidates David Andrews, Lady Valerie Goulding, Owen Hammond and Martin O’Donoghue. David Andrews was the only one of them to win a seat.
I probably got this outside the polling station as back then canvassers operated as you went in to vote.
The Card was a smaller version of the Fianna Fail posters festooning the area.

 

Derek Nally -Independent -1997 Presidential Election


From the 1997 Presidential Election a leaflet for Independent candidate (and only Male to stand) Derek Nally. Nally received 59,529 votes.
The Tipperary native was resident in Bunclody County Wexford at the time. The retired Garda Sergeant managed to get nominated by five County Councils to run. These were Wexford, Clare, Carlow, Kildare and South Dublin County Councils.
