A traffic themed leaflet from Fine Gael candidate Naoise Ó Muirí running in the 2004 Local Elections in the Clontarf ward. Ó Muirí was elected and returned again in the 2009 Local Elections.

Billy Hillis -Fine Gael -Athy 2009 Local Elections

A leaflet from Fine Gael candidate Billy Hillis running in the Athy LEA in the 2009 Local elections in Kildare.
Hillis who had served a number of terms as a councillor lost his seat. Part of his loss was due to boundary changes where parts of Naas joined the Athy LEA.

Frank Maher -Fianna Fail -2002 GE Louth


A leaflet from the 2002 General Election for Fianna Fail candidate in Louth Frank Maher. Drogheda based Maher polled 4,653 votes and narrowly missed out on a seat. He stood again in the 2007 General Election without success.
On the Reverse we see the ‘A lot done, more to do’ with the achievements of the 1997 to 2002 Government listed.

Tom Dalzell-Sheridan -UK Unionist Party -1998 Assembly Elections West Belfast


From the 1998 Assembly Elections, Tom Dalzell-Sheridan running for the UK Unionist Party in West Belfast. He failed to win a seat.
The UK Unionists were Anti Agreement and were in favour of direct rule from London.

Finglas/ Ballymun People-Irish Socialist Network -Feb/March 2009


The Finglas/Ballymun People a newsletter produced by the Irish Socialist Network in early 2009.
The impact of the Financial Crisis, the Gaza Genocide , Bin Tax News and the Plaza Hotel workers are amongst the items covered.
John O’Neill polled 462 votes in the Ballymun Finglas ward.

From the 2002 General Election a leaflet for unsuccessful Fine Gael candidate Therese Ridge running in Dublin Mid West . She had previously stood in 1987 and 1992. She failed to win a seat both times.

Another Letter from the Christian Solidarity Party candidate Conor O’Donoghue that appeared in a pamphlet produced for the 2009 Local Elections in Limerick.
The letter is posted along with a page from the pamphlet that contains what was possibly his election flyer.

The opening line is especially good given its recipient.
As you are apparently the cutting edge of the Political Establishment’s onslaught against anything of Christian value in Ireland today, please permit me to put it to you that your brilliant legal mind is being used by powers much stronger and more intelligent than yourself

“The Dirty Dozen -McCreevy Cuts Social Welfare 12 Times Since April” -Emmet Stagg, Jack Wall- Labour Party- 1992 General Election


From the run up to the 1992 General Election, a leaflet from Labour candidates Emmet Stagg and Jack Wall running in Kildare. Emmet Stagg was elected with Jack Wall narrowly missing out.
The leaflet attacks cuts done by constituency colleague Fianna Fails Charlie McCreevy, these cuts were known as the ‘Dirty Dozen’.

From the 2004 local elections a leaflet from Labour candidate Sinead Seery who was running in the Artane Ward. She polled well but failed to win a seat. In 2009 she again narrowly missed out on a seat.

Canvass Card from Gerry ‘Ginger’ McLoughlin -Labour Party -Limerick 2009 LE


A simple card with useful numbers from former Rugby International Gerry ‘Ginger’ McLoughlin issued around the 2009 Local Elections.
Gerry, a prop, won 18 caps for Ireland. He was also a member of the famous Munster team that beat the All Blacks in 1978. He is probably most remembered for his try against England in Twickenham (seen here from 7.03 mins onwards) during Ireland’s Triple Crown campaign in 1982.

Gerry McLoughlin was originally elected as an Independent to Limerick City council in 2004 before joining Labour in 2006.
He was comfortably elected in the 2009 Local Elections and his daughter Orla McLoughlin was also elected to Limerick City Council in 2009.

Canvass card with Quiz from Peter Cassells -Labour Party -2004 European Elections Ireland East.


From the 2004 European Elections, a Canvass card with a Quiz on the back (which someone has tried to answer) from Peter Cassells The Labour Party candidate in Ireland East. The answer to Question c is fairly vague.
Peter Cassells is a former head of the ICTU. He polled 59,158 votes (13.05%) and failed to win a seat.

A leaflet produced by Fine Gael candidate Lucinda Creighton for the the 2007 General Election campaign in Dublin South East.
This candidate rejects incineration, protects our Green spaces and supports our environment. proclaims Lucinda.
This was one of many leaflets where candidates tried to out Green the Greens.

Is GM Food Safe? -Patricia McKenna -1999 European Elections -Dublin


From the 1999 European Elections, a leaflet produced by Green Party Candidate Patricia McKenna asking ‘Is GM Food Safe?’. Many of the concerns are still shared today.
Patricia McKenna was comfortably elected.

Sean Crowe -Sinn Fein -1999 European Elections Dublin

From the 1999 European Elections a leaflet for Sinn Fein candidate Sean Crowe.

Crowe polled 18,633 (6.64%) votes and failed to win a seat. He did however win a council seat on the same day. In the 2002 General Election he topped the poll in Dublin South West but to many peoples surprise lost his seat in 2007.

One of a series of cartoons that were on Progressive Democrat election leaflets for the 2007 General Election.
This one attacking Labour. Presumably the PDs wanted to be in the driving seat.

 

Maurice Quinlivan- Sinn Fein -Limerick East- 2007 GE June 2, 2010


From the 2007 General Election in Limerick East a leaflet for Sinn Fein candidate Maurice Quinlivan.
Quinlavin polled 2,081 votes and failed to win a seat. He did however win a seat on Limerick City Council in 2009.
It was the making of defamatory statements about Quinlavin, that eventually led to Willie O’Dea resigning as Minister of Defence.

“Politicians Don’t Listen…” – Dan Sullivan -Fine Gael- 2004 LE -Artane


From the 2004 Local Elections a leaflet from Fine Gael candidate (and now well known blogger) Dan Sullivan.
Its a clever enough leaflet with the “Politicians Don’t Listen…” on the front and the “Test MY Listening Skills….” on the reverse.
He polled 278 votes and failed to get elected.
