PD ‘bill to end TDs pensions’, Abolish Seanad etc October 2, 2009

This is the front page of a PD paper type manifesto from 1987.(Apologies for the scan but its two scans put together like a jigsaw, so I’ll do the rest of the pages at a later date). You may need to click on the image to see the full details
Whats brilliant is the following bill put forward in 1986 which included the following….
-Ending pensions to sitting TDs
-Terminating the Senate
-Reducing the number of TDs from 166 to 120
-Reducing the number of junior ministers from 15 to 7 …etc
Does that ring a bell anyone?

Kildare Labour News- December 1989- Stagg, Howlin ,Kemmy

This is an interesting little pamphlet where we have a Labour party ‘a socialist alternative’. Very much of its time in both the articles on the falling of Communism, The National Question, our Health Service, Women at Work and also the ads.
It also features some of the late Jim Kemmys poetry.
Click on the images if you have difficulty seeing the whole page.

Sean Dublin Bay Loftus 1992 GE October 1, 2009

A request came in for more Sean DBL…. This is from the 1992 General election.
Sean Dublin Bay Loftus (also known briefly as Sean Dublin Bay Rockhall Loftus), was elected to the Dail on just the one occasion in June 1981. He lost his seat 8 months later at the Feb 1982 election (maybe that’s why he has “A Fixed Statutory Dail term of 5 years” in his manifesto) . He Stood in Dublin North Central.
Sean isn’t in favour of Coalitions…. instead he favours that the major party does a deal with a bunch of Community Candidates rather than say The Labour Party! …
Plenty of other decent and interesting policies also. To see a proposal 20 years ago that would fit today…
Reduction in Number of TDs and A Politicians Pay Freeze.
An Abortion Referendum was held on the same day as the 1992 Election and Sean was very much ‘Pro-Life’, he advocates a No vote.

Two Leaflets from Martin MacFeorais -Independent -1987 Dublin South

“….we are assailed from many quarters, and by determined individuals advancing their own sectional interest to our detriment…”
Ring a bell? a good deal of this could be applied to today.
I just like the design of these two leaflets, the mother carrying her shopping with a boy and girl either side, the warm greeting ‘Dia bhur mbeatha’ and even the colurs are unusual for election flyers.
Martin MacFeorais polled 107 votes.

Featuring a cool looking Eamon Gilmore….Workers Party 1991 – ‘Do You Remember 1985?”

Its from the back of a Marian White Leaflet (the lady on the left of the picture). Its eyecatching to say the least.
Colm Breathnach, Denis O’Callaghan and Eamon Gilmore were elected.

All aboard “The Condom Train” – Workers Party Maynooth 1991 September 29, 2009

Its 1991 – Maynooth is rotten with Sex…..

Actually at the time Condoms were difficult to buy, the  Virgin Megastore was one of the few places one could get condoms unless one was married.A Condom Machine had been quite a divisive issue in the College, especially considering at the time 15% of the Student body would have been Clerical Students and there would have also been a good number of ‘lay’ Theology students. There had been student Referendums on the issue (I wish I had kept that ‘Self Control – Not Condoms’ poster) and this Workers Party Group ‘Students For Change’ were trying a number of different protests.
The Condom Train was one of them….

Sean Doherty/Mark Killilea Fianna Fail Connaught-Ulster Euro 89

Sean Doherty and Mark Killilea from the 1989 Euro Elections. Killilea was elected. Doherty will always be associated with the phone tapping scandal and later on that interview on Nighthawks’ that led in part to Haugheys downfall…. and yes I did pick the second leaflet off the ground.

(Judge) Pat McCartan- Democratic Left -Dublin North East 1992

Another Judge who had a Political Career was Pat McCartan. Elected initially in 1987 for The Workers Party, he retained his seat in the 1989 General Election.
McCartan was One of the Six TDs that formed Democratic Left in March 1992. This Leaflet is for the Novemver 1992 election where he lost his seat. The list of organisations he is associated with is very much of the time, CND, The Irish Anti Apartheid movement etc. The DLs 7 point plan is there also.

Tony Gregory Letter to Constituents 08 /Maureen O’Sullivan 09

This was sent to me by the wonderfully helpful Maureen O’Sullivan.  Its over a year on from the letter and 9 months since Tonys Passing on the 2nd of January. I gather it was his last communication with all his constituents. Gracious and humble as ever.

Maureen O’Sullivans literature has the same picture of herself and the Late Tony Gregory as that on the Gregory Leaflet.
