From the 1968 Referendum on Change in Voting System, two Labour Party ‘Vote No’ Posters
‘The Straight Vote is Crooked’ Vote NO!
Fianna Fail proposed changing the voting system to that similar to the UK
The Third Amendment of the Constitution Bill, 1968, proposes
To substitute for the present system of voting at Dáil elections the “straight vote” system in single-member constituencies;
To establish a Commission to determine constituencies, subject to the right of the Dáil to amend the constituencies as so determined; and
To provide that whenever the Dáil is dissolved the outgoing Ceann Comhairle may be returned, without a contest, as a second deputy for a constituency chosen by him which consists of, or includes a part of, the constituency he represented before the dissolution.

Independent candidate Dean O’Nualláin from the 1997 General Election in Dublin South Central. He received 80 votes.
With all the immigrants coming into the country he wanted Dubliners to be a higher priority than them.

Just posting this message from Garret Fitzgerald, to illustrate the state of the Country in the Feb 1982 election.

The Tax Reform League candidate, Mairead Duchon from the 1987 General Election in Dublin South.
The Tax Reform League stood in the 1987 General Election (I’m not sure if they were a registered party). Aside from Mairead Duchon, who got 1253 votes, they fielded at least 3 other candidates.
Camella Cummins stood in Meath getting 636 votes.
Timothy Cahill stood in Dublin South Central and got 711 votes.
Patrick McKiernan stood in Cavan-Monaghan getting 1,868 votes.
From Democratic Left in the 1994 European Elections in Dublin…. A Question asked by many over the years about Pat Rabbitte (and many others) ‘What does he want..?’
Prionsias De Rossa had won a seat for The Workers Party in Dublin in 1989. Following the Workers Party Split, De Rossa stepped down and the Democratic Lefts Des Geraghty was co-opted and served from 1992 to 1994 as an MEP. Despite Geraghty being the outgoing MEP, Pat Rabbitte stood in 1994.
The DL were very fond of quotes from newspapers (as The Greens used to be too). Rabbitte bemoans the lack of EU money for Dublin and the amount of funds going to farmers.
Rabbitte failed to win a seat. (result at electionsireland.org)
Fianna Fail Candidate John Lahart from the 2004 local Elections in Terenure / Rathfarnham. Lahart topped the poll and got in on the first count.
In 2009 he again got in on the first count.
He is seen as a possible candidate in Dublin South at the next election, especially should Tom Kitt elect not to stand again.
He also asks people to contact him (rather than the council) should all his posters not be taken down.
Former Late Late Show pianist Frank McNamara from his 2007 General Election campaign in Dublin South Central. He polled 474 votes (result at electionsireland.org)
‘Orchestrating a better Future’ has to be one of the corniest slogans around.
The aim to “cut income tax to 18% and 38%” seems a long way away now.
Veteran Labour politician Michael Bell from the 2002 General Election in Louth. Michael Bell lost his seat in the 2002 election, a seat he had held since November 1982.

Esther Uzzell standing for Justice for her brother Joe Rafferty in the 2007 General Election in Dublin South East.
Full details of the Campaign at justice for joe campaign
Esther on her campaign is pictured with then US President Georgr Bush and also with Hilary Clinton.

Found a few more 1982 snow pics. Not as spectacular as the first one I posted.
In the first picture the snow covers the road and is at wall height.
The second one is I gather taken later during the thaw and you can see the snow cleared to make the door accessible. Its of St Marks school in Tallaght.
The third one shows how cars were snowed in too.

As positive looking a leaflet as you’ll find. Fine Gael candidate Jim O’Leary from the 2007 General Election in Dublin South.
Despite it being mass produced, the smile on the candidate and the “P.S if your number 1 vote is committed, please give me your highest preference” make it almost personal.

Fianna Fails Tom Doherty from the 1999 Local Elections in Kerry. Doherty was running for both Kerry County Council and Killarney UDC. He was elected to neither.
Looking at the manifesto the call for the increase in the first time buyers grant and re-construction grant shows that the Property boom had started and even then there were those needing a helping hand getting on the property ladder.
The ‘Newsletter’ of Fianna Fail candidate Tim Cotter in the 1991 Local elections for Kildare County Council, Celbridge LEA. Cotter failed to win a seat.
Plenty in teh Newsletter though. A nice message from Charles J Haughey at the back.
Cotter is pictured canvassing happy looking workers at the INTEL plant. He also has shots with such luminaries as the then Lord Mayor of Dublin Michael Donnelly, Michael O’Kennedy, Bertie Ahern, Mary O’Rourke, Seamus Brennan and Ray Burke. Its a whos who of Fianna Fail at the time.
The boot is put into Labour too over Service Charges.
The now disgraced former Fine Gael TD Liam T. Cosgrave from the 1989 General Election in Dun Laoghaire.
From a Fine Gael dynasty, Liam T Cosgrave is son of former Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave and also grandson of another former Fine Gael leader W. T. Cosgrave.
Having lost his seat in 1987 Liam Cosgrave again failed to win a seat in 1989 despite having won the fourth most first preferences in a five seat constituency.
In 2003 he resigned from Fine Gael, after evidence in the Mahon tribunal heard that Cosgrave had accepted illegal payments from property developers in return for voting to rezone property in Dublin. In 2005, Cosgrave pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to disclose to the Standards in Public Office Commission a political donation of £2,500 received from lobbyist Frank Dunlop. He was sentenced to 75 hours Community Service.
From the 2002 General Election, Labour Candidate Mary Upton defends the seat she won in the by-election in 1999. The By-Election was caused by the passing of her Brother Pat Upton. Amongst the photos in the Leaflet are herself and Mick McCarthy.

Rooskey based Fine Gael candidate Leo Cox from the 2004 Local elections. Leo Cox stood in the Strokestown LEA but failed to win a seat on Roscommon County Council.
