Declan O’Loan -SDLP -North Antrim -2010 UK General Election May 8, 2010

From the 2010 UK Election. Declan O’Loan running for the SDLP in North Antrim. O’Loan polled 3738 votes.
On the front of the leaflet is a photo of Margaret Ritchie with arms outstretched. The fact that the SDLP take their seats gets a mention as does the fact that Declan O’Loan is the Honorary Consul for Romania in Northern Ireland.
Many thanks to the sender

Ian Butler -Alliance Party- Mid Ulster 2010 UK Election

From the 2010 Westminster Election. An election leaflet from Alliance Party candidate in Mid Ulster Ian Butler. Ian Butler polled 397 votes and lost his deposit.
It was though a successful election for the party as they had their first MP Naomi Long Elected. Of the material I have from the election (I’ve stuff from all the parties that contested in the North) the Alliance were the only ones to have anything other than English or Irish on their leaflets (I didn’t see any Ulster Scots anywhere). There are a number of languages on their leaflet, of which I think includes some Chinese (Cantonese?) and Polish.
Many thanks to the sender

David Harding -Conservative and Unionist -Foyle 2010 UK Election

From the 2010 Westminister Election, a leaflet from Conservative and Unionist candidate David Harding running in Foyle. David Harding polled
1,221 votes (3.22%) and lost his deposit.
In the leaflet a lot of emphasis is put on the partnership between the UUP and the Ulster Unionist Party and how ‘for the first time in a generation, people in Northern Ireland can have a decisive say in who forms the next UK government.’
Problem of course being that it may now be the DUP who have that say.
Harding is pictured all over Derry with a grey haired lady, anyone know who she is?

Peter Robinson -DUP -East Belfast 2010 UK Election May 7, 2010

From the 2010 UK Election, the standard leaflet from DUP Leader Peter Robinson. Peter Robinson sensationally lost his seat to Naomi Long of the Alliance Party.
He is here pictured with Obama, with British soldiers serving in the Middle East, in the House of Commons but most strikingly hes pictured hard hat on a building site.
If one didn’t know better you’d think he it was with a group of smiling developers.
The Picture beside it is in my view foolish also as it pictures him beside a £ sign!

In fact that page has him in the House of commons first, then with developers and then beside the pound sign. Underneath we have the arrow!
So it could be seen as…. expenses + land deals = cash

Garret Fitzgerald Letter urging a vote for Mary Banotti- 1989 European Elections April 29, 2010

From the 1989 European Elections campaign a letter from Garret Fitzgerald asking voters to vote for Mary Banotti. He also, in what looks like an afterthought asks for a vote for Chris O’Malley (O’Malley had been co-opted as an MEP in 1986 to replace Richie Ryan who had taken a role with the European Court of Auditors).
Mary Banotti had been elected an MEP in 1984, according to the letter she was fluent in French and Italian. Banotti was another former RTE person who had entered politics. She was too Fine Gael blue blood in that Michael Collins was her Grand Uncle. She was also sister of Nora Owen.
Garret Fitzgerald had resigned as leader of Fine Gael two years previously, I think this letter was to constituents in Dublin South East.
In the 1989 European Elections,Mary Banotti held her seat and Chris O’Malley lost his.

“Sorry to have missed you!” – Nessa Childers -Green Party -Blackrock 2004 Local Elections Blackrock.

A Rather Lengthy and verbose ‘Sorry I missed you’ card from Nessa Childers when running for the Green Party in Blackrock in the 2004 Local Elections. Nessa Childers was elected.
She is the daughter of former president of Ireland Erskine Childers. She resigned her council seat in August 2008 citing pressure of work as a psychoanalyst as her reason.
Less than a year later she surfaced as the Labour European Parliament candidate for the East constituency. She was elected and is now a Labour MEP.

From the 2007 General Election Campaign a Dublin North Transport Newsletter produced by councillor Clare Daly the Socialist Party candidate. Despite getting a creditable 4,872 votes Calre Daly wasn’t elected.
Simple things such as increasing the size of trains and of platforms, school bus services, more bus services are amongst the items mentioned.  There is of course mention of the Gridlock and the poor planning that led to having such a vast commuter belt without proper public transport services.

Liz O’Donnell was first elected to Dublin City Council in 1991 for Rathmines. Liz O’Donnell had been active in Mary Robinson’s 1990 Presidential campaign. In his book Ruairi Quinn claimed that she had contacted him wanting to help the Labour campaign of Mary Freehill, then she appeared as the Progressive Democrat candidate for Rathmines (where she outpolled Freehill).
In 1992 Liz O’Donnell stood in Dublin South and was elected. She was returned each time until this 2007 General Election where she lost her seat.
