“A felon’s cap’s the noblest crown. An Irish head can wear.” Leaflet from Tom Mitchell -Sinn Fein -1956 Mid Ulster By-Election September 11, 2012
From the 1956 Mid Ulster By-Election a leaflet from Sinn Fein candidate Tom Mitchell. The background to the by-election is fascinating, and you can see the reason the leaflet quotes the poem “The Felons of our land” with “A felon’s cap’s the noblest crown. An Irish head can wear.”
Mitchell polled 24,124 votes and lost the election.
The by-election held in Mid Ulster on 8 May 1956 was called because both candidates in the Mid Ulster by-election, 1955 were disqualified. Tom Mitchell was disqualified from assuming office because he was a convicted felon. Charles Beattie was awarded the seat but he was also disqualified because he held an office of profit under the Crown

Ian Butler -Alliance Party- Mid Ulster 2010 UK Election May 8, 2010
From the 2010 Westminster Election. An election leaflet from Alliance Party candidate in Mid Ulster Ian Butler. Ian Butler polled 397 votes and lost his deposit.
It was though a successful election for the party as they had their first MP Naomi Long Elected. Of the material I have from the election (I’ve stuff from all the parties that contested in the North) the Alliance were the only ones to have anything other than English or Irish on their leaflets (I didn’t see any Ulster Scots anywhere). There are a number of languages on their leaflet, of which I think includes some Chinese (Cantonese?) and Polish.
Many thanks to the sender
Benny (Benedict) McElwee -Sinn Fein- 1982 Stormont Elections December 21, 2009
This Poster was sent in by a kind reader , who writes …..
It is about as early as you will find from modern day Sinn Féin. It’s from one of the initiatives I think it’s 1982 but it’s definitely the Jim Prior organised one for a Stormont Assembley/Forum which SF fought on an abstenion policy. I think the SDLP ended up the same too.
The candidate is Benny (Benedict) Mcelwee from Bellaghy, the brother of Hunger Striker, Thomas and cousin of Francis Hughes. Second on the paper is Danny Morrison of Ballot box and Armalite fame.
It was for the mid-ulster constituency and this one was the South Derry version. Up until this election, most full on Republicans had stood on a H-Blocks ticket and for the short lived Irish Independence Party so it’s as early a PSF poster as you’ll find.
Ironic indeed the ‘Smash Stormont’ legend at the top, I think the DUP ran with ‘Smash Sinn Féin’ in the same campaign.
