Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) – ‘Saying No means NO FUTURE’ -Good Friday Agreement May 4, 2010

A leaflet from the UDP in favour of the Good Friday Agreement.
The Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) were a small Loyalist party allied to UDA. They disbanded in 2001.
The UDP were formed in 1989 from the Ulster Loyalist Democratic Party (UDLP) which had been set up by the UDA in 1981. In this leaflet the leader of the party is Gary McMichael whose father John McMichael, had previously been leader of the UDLP. John McMichael was killed in 1987.
From the 1996 Forum elections the party were alloted 2 seats, taken by Gary McMichael and John White. These seats entitled them to a place in the all-party talks that led to the Good Friday Agreement.
In the 1998 Assembly elections the party failed to win any seats. They held a number of council seats until their demise in 2001.

Your kind of country

It will open in realplayer or something akin to that

The song and then a critique from assorted politicians.

Michael Cotter -Fianna Fail -1985 Local Elections Blackrock

From the 1985 Local Elections in the Blackrock Ward, Fianna Fail candidate Michael Cotter. Michael Cotter failed to be elected and stood again in 1991 without success.
A plea about being the youngest candidate and asking young and first time voters to vote for him is a fairly common theme.

Another unusual one from the UK Election. This time Celebrities endorsing the Labour Party. Eddie Izzard, Alex Ferguson, JK Rowling,  Patrick Stewart, Tony Robinson, Liz Dawn and Ross Kemp are among those promoting Labour here.
We may have the odd celebrity candidate in Ireland, but I’ve never seen an Irish political party produce something with a host of famous names endorsing it.
Maybe its Irish begrudgery….. ‘Well if Bono says vote for **** , he can f*** o** if he thinks I’m listening to him’ and so on.

Out of The Ashes Arose The Provisionals -Republican Christmas Card

A christmas card produced, I assume by the Republican movement or Sinn Fein. I think its from the 70s or early 80s.
Aside from the  traditional ‘Nollaig faoi shean is faoi mhaise duit’ in the card there is also a quote from Marie Drumm.
‘We must take no steps backwards, our steps must be forward, for if we don’t our martyrs who died for you, for me, for this country, will haunt us for eternity’
Marie Drumm was a former vice president of Sinn Féin who was assinated whilst in hospital by Loyalists in 1976. She was also a commander in Cumann na mBan.

I saw this and couldn’t resist posting it. The Labour candidate Dan Norris contrasts himself to the Tory candidate Jacob Rees-Mogg. You wouldn’t be exactly thrilled if you were the Tory candidate.

Young Fine Gael – Futureline -Autumn 1992 -includes Condom articles and John Bruton interview

I’m not sure if this is a supplement to the October 1992 edition of Futureline or if it was an edition produced by itself (and I’m missing the cover?). Futureline was (is?) a Young Fine Gael Magazine.
The main focus of this is an interview with John Bruton. We also have amongst other things an editorial from a Young Brian Hayes (The New National Youth and Education Officer),  items on condoms and stuff on the Rio summit.
The items on condoms by Colm Brophy and John Armstrong are especially interesting and give an insight into the time.

If you cant see the full image click on it (I’ll have to start doing pdf files for some of these soon)
