“Who do they think they’re fooling this time?” asks this 2004 Leaflet from the Labour Party. The ‘They’ in this case being Fianna Fail .
The leaflet mentions some of the 2002 promises from Fianna Fail and gives a progress report on them.

Thought this of interest, a flyer for a meeting organised by Labour Councillor Aidan Culhane, with amongst others Joan Burton speaking, on how to deal with Management companies.
Ten years ago few of us had any dealings with them but the upsurge in Management companies was a side effect of the property boom. Most new Estates and Apartment Blocks rather than have the council maintain them had Management Companies. Indeed often (if not always) the first years management fee had to be paid when buying a property. Often Management Companies were set up by the developers so they made on the double.
As times have got harder its another bill that in the current climate is often back of the queue for paying, so in some developments less than 50% of homeowners would have paid.
There is also a problem that in some contracts, you cannot sell unless the management fees are up to date.
Might be an interesting talk.
Many thanks to the sender.

From 2003 when doubts about E-Voting were coming to the fore a report for the Labour Parliamentary Party by Shane Hogan and Robert Cochran entitled ‘Electronic Voting in Ireland -A Threat to Democracy?’
There is a lovely quote from the Film Gangs of New York on the front.
The Report itself gives a background to the Irish System its History, Key Components and Operating Procedures. Other areas covered include the the Voter Verifiable Audit Trail as well as possible threats.
The Report recommended “that further usage of Electronic Voting in Ireland is suspended, until”
– A Voter Verifiable Audit Trail is available to give each voter absolute confidence that their vote had been correctly recorded and counted.
– Appropriate control processes & procedures are implemented by DoEHLG, with audit & supervisory responsibility vested in an independent body.
– Integrated ‘end-to-end’ testing, including statistical analysis of the randomisation feature, is carried out to verify the accuracy of the entire system
– DoEHLG commits to providing full details of tally information in database form after each election.
I have uploaded the Report in *.PDF Format HERE

From the 2004 European Elections flyers from Labour candidate Ivana Bacik. She failed to win a seat.
The flyers caused a bit of a stir at the time given the association between kissing and voting. They were distributed in pubs and clubs during the campaign.
The sender (many thanks) notes “..original Ivana Bacik postcard from Euro election 2004. This version was used as a postcard, a large version was used for washroom adverts. The reverse side of this postcard has a sticker that was used at a post – election thank you event.”
I gather the initial flyers (a the bottom of the post) I posted were an online one.
From the 2009 Local elections a leaflet for Labour candidate Claire O’Regan running in the North Inner City. She was elected having got 892 votes.
The candidate and her Labour colleague Aodhan O Riordain are pictured with former Shamrock Rovers and Ireland star Johnny Giles. Giles is now of course best known for his role as a pundit with RTE.
Continuing the RTE theme, this leaflet was featured on the RTE soap Fair City during the run up to the election, which caused a bit of a furore at the time.
Many thanks to the sender.
From the 2007 General Election campaign a flyer from Labour candidate in Dublin North Central, former TD Derek McDowell.
‘Enjoy Your Weekend With Labour’ with nice pictures of leisure time on the front and then on the Reverse we have a message that it was Labour, in 1993, who introduced the May day Bank Holiday.
So thanks to Labour you were going to have a long weekend!
Derek McDowell, who had been a TD from 1992 to 2002, got 2,649 votes and failed to win a seat.
From the 2007 General Election a leaflet for Labour Party candidate Jim O’Brien. The Laois based O’Brien polled 1278 votes and failed to win a seat.
He is a freelance journalist as well as a writer and has been a writer on Pat Shortts TV show Killinascully as well as The Farmers Journal.

I was looking through Labours 2007 Manifesto (as you do) and this popped up at me. A proposed scheme to allow people in employment who couldn’t afford to buy, onto the property ladder. They took a 25% stake of the home whilst the government would have a stake of 75% of your new house.
Almost as if the Government was becoming a sub-prime lender…. and who aside from the person in employment would benefit?
Those that profited from a prolonged property bubble. Investors, Solicitors, Estate Agents, Developers and Banks as the market would be inflated yet again by direct government investment in housing….
…and when the crash came we’d surely have had to have had a NAMA for these households too.
From the 2007 General Election a leaflet from Labour Party candidate Jan O’Sullivan running in Limerick East. O’Sullivan was comfortably elected. Jan O’Sullivan , a former member of Jim Kemmys Democratic Socialist Party, was elected in the 1998 by-election caused by the passing of Jim Kemmy. She has held the seat since.
First off many thanks to the sender.
A 1981 fundraising letter from Paddy Kavanagh (with post compliments of Liam Kavanagh) to Labour Party Wicklow members promoting “A Sweepstakes on the Aintree Grand National” .
From the 1997 General Election a leaflet for Labour candidates Sean Kenny and Tommy Broughan. Both had been elected in the Spring Tide of 1992 as Labour took 30% of the vote in Dublin North East. In 1997 with the Labour vote down Tommy Broughan held on to his seat whilst Sean Kenny lost out.
The main thing in this leaflet is ‘How Labour has made the Vital Difference’ with stats galore comparing the 1992-1997 period to the previous Fianna Fail/PD government.
You will also notice the Partnership Works Slogan that Labour , Fine Gael and Democratic Left had in the 1997 Election.
Many thanks to the sender.
From the 2009 Local Elections a leaflet for Labour candidate Ian McGahon running for Bray Town Council. McGahon running in the Bray West Ward polled 395 votes.
Was sent these images (many thanks). A 1927 County Tipperary Labour Bulletin. There were two elections in 1927 so I’m not sure which campaign this comes from.
Daniel Morrissey was a Labour TD, became an Independent , switched to Cumann na nGaedheal and then became a Fine Gael TD. He was a TD from 1922 to 1954.
The William O’Brien mentioned is probably ‘William X. O’Brien’ who (according to wikipedia) was “A close friend and associate of James Connolly. O’Brien helped establish the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union in 1909, and was instrumental in the Dublin Lockout strike in 1913″….. “O’Brien was elected as TD for Dublin South at the 1922 general election, and again for Tipperary in June 1927 and again in 1937”.
The details of the campaign are covered including meetings, canvassing, transport and The Register of electors.
Apologies for the size of the text.
From July 2010 Senator Alex Whites ‘Summer Report’. White positioning himself for the by election if it ever happens.
Amongst other things it Contains a message from him, excerpts from speeches in the Seanad and an attempt at getting Green votes with the ‘Growing Your Own’ part.
Its not just the signs in shops, the ads in the papers, on the radio and on television that remind you that its back to school time…. its flyers from politicians too.
Here a recent flyer from Labour councillor Aidan Culhane with the Back to School theme also.
Various allowances and schemes are covered.
From the 2007 General Election in Dublin South West a flyer from the then Labour Leader Pat Rabbitte with the catchy headline “This Constituency needs a Senior Government Minister”.
The flyer continues that “Pat Rabbitte can be that Senior Minister” and the standard “No Seat is Safe”.
Pat Rabbitte was elected….. he didn’t become a “Senior Government Minister”.
