1990 Leaflet on Overcrowding in College from The Workers Party May 25, 2010

From 1990 a leaflet on Overcrowding in College produced by The Workers Party.
Presumably a lot of it is still relevant today.
Overcrowding demonstrably affects us all, regardless of place of study, and in all aspects of our student-life: lectures, libraries, catering, accommodation and safety. The greatest irony, however, is that the increased pressures placed on students by overcrowding may well lead to increased failure-rates and ultimately decreased graduate numbers!

The Workers’ Party believes education is not a luxury. It is vital for our economic growth, for a healthy political democracy and for the future well-being of our society. We are totally opposed to all cutbacks, either direct or indirect, in the education system.

Eamon Gilmore -Workers Party -1987 General Election Dun Laoghaire May 15, 2010

From the 1987 General Election, the now Labour Party Leader Eamon Gilmore running for the Workers Party in Dun Laoghaire.
Although polling a respectable 4,054 votes he failed to get in. He did though increase from his November 1982 total and build on the winning of a Council seat in 1985. In the 1989 General Election he was elected.
The Roches Hill Compensation scandal referred to was where in 1986 the Council paid out £2.375 million in compensation for refusal of a residential development at Roches Hill in Killiney, the land had been bought for £40,000. To add insult to injury even after the compensation, the Council did not become the owner of the land.

Bernard Connolly, Vincent MacDowell, Joseph Maguire, Gerard O’Reilly- Labour Party- 1967 Local Elections Rathdown

From the 1967 Local Elections in the Rathdown Ward Labour Party candidates Bernard Connolly, Vincent MacDowell, Joseph Maguire and Gerard O’Reilly.
Was given a loan of this to scan – many thanks.
The Leaflet starts off by telling us that the local Elections had been delayed because they feared the Labour Party.
Labour seeks your active support -to change the quality of our local life by encouraging all sections of the community to develop a new progressive civic spirit.
Bernard Connolly was involved in the ITGWU, and would have been well known in the area at the time.
Vincent MacDowell, who later stood for the Green Party in 1992 and 1997 General Elections was father of former MEP Nuala Ahern. The Socialist Republican Labour Party which he was a founder of was the Party of Gerry Fitt amongst others.
It split in 1970 as Gerry Fitt and others joined the newly formed SDLP. The party disbanded in 1973.
Joseph Maguire was another involved in the ITGWU as well as music where he helped reestablish St Kevins Band in Bray.
Gerard O’Reilly was a businessman in Stillorgan and interested in the care of the mentally handicapped.

‘Euro-Dub’ -Des Geraghty freesheet -Democratic Left Summer 1993 April 28, 2010

From the summer of 1993 a freesheet produced by Des Geraghty of Democratic Left called ‘Euro-Dub’ (not exactly the catchiest title). Geraghty , who had stood unsuccessfully in the 1984 European Elections for The Workers Party, was co-opted to replace Prionsias De Rossa as MEP in the Summer of 1992. In effect this freesheet was advertising the fact that he was now the MEP. I’m not sure what the situation was in 1994 when it was Pat Rabbitte rather than Geraghty who fought the Euro Election in Dublin for The Democratic Left.
The paper argues that Dublin was neglected, that a lot of the EU money went elsewhere in the country than Dublin. There is an attack on The Dirty Dozen
Theres an interesting article ‘Culture on the Dole’ written by ‘Joxer Daly’. I presume to illustrate that the Democratic Left were not just concerned with the peoples economic wellbeing but also with their quality of life.
The in brief mentions amongst other items, the dispute at Pat the Baker, Sellafield and a new CD ‘Step by Step’ by the Work and Play Band. There is also a further indication of culture with a competition to win the Roddy Doyle book ‘Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha’.
I have yet to perfect pdfs so you’ll need to click on the image to read the pages.

From the 2007 General Election Campaign a Dublin North Transport Newsletter produced by councillor Clare Daly the Socialist Party candidate. Despite getting a creditable 4,872 votes Calre Daly wasn’t elected.
Simple things such as increasing the size of trains and of platforms, school bus services, more bus services are amongst the items mentioned.  There is of course mention of the Gridlock and the poor planning that led to having such a vast commuter belt without proper public transport services.
