‘Fight your corner -Dont Emigrate’ -Sinn Fein / Republican Clubs posters from the 1970s March 29, 2010


From the 1970s a selection of images of  Republican Clubs and Sinn Fein posters kindly sent to me by a donor.
An Anti EEC poster presumably from the 1973 Referendum (with the Slogan Fight your corner – Don’t Emigrate), a poster criticising The Cosgrave Government , a Republican Clubs poster and one also for the Freeing of all Political Prisoners.
This version of Sinn Fein / Republican Clubs was the precursor of Sinn Fein The Workers Party which became The Workers Party although I’m not 100% sure they all are.

RISE! Rural Ireland Says Enough!
is campaigning at national, regional and local level to mobilise public and political opinion in support of our traditional field sports and rural pastimes.

Various proposals due in front of the Oireachtas ‘…represent part of a wider, fundamentalist Green agenda being foisted on people.’

 

Rachel Doherty -Fianna Fail -2009 LE -Boyle Roscommon


From the 2009 local elections, Fianna Fail candidate Rachel Doherty running in the Boyle electoral area.
Rachel Doherty , daughter of former Fianna Fail TD and minister Sean Doherty, was first elected in 2004 and was returned again in 2009.

Tony Kett , Ernie Beggs,Tom Stafford -Fianna Fail -1991 LE North Inner City


From the 1991 Local Elections Fianna Fail candidates Tony Kett , Ernie Beggs and Tom Stafford. The late Tony Kett and Tom Stafford were both elected.
The Galway born Kett was a close friend of Bertie Ahern and was elected to the Seanad in 1997 where he served until his passing in 2009.

Walter Lacey -Progressive Democrat -2007 GE Carlow -Kilkenny


From the 2007 General Election in Carlow -Kilkenny Progressive Democrat candidate Walter Lacey. Carlow based Walter Lacey polled 1,073 votes and failed to be elected.
Having been a County Councillor since 1989, Lacey was elected in 2009 as an Independent.
In 1987 Carlow Kilkenny returned a PD TD Martin Gibbons.

A leaflet advertising a Public Rally organised by the Save Our Acute Services group to keep services at South Tipperary General Hospital (also known as Clonmel Hospital).

Marie Ardagh -Fianna Fail -Terenure Rathfarnham 2004 LE


A flyer from then Mayor of South County Dublin, Marie Ardagh running for Fianna Fail in Terenure-Rathfarnham ward in the 2004 local Elections.
Marie Ardagh was elected comfortably.

From the 2007 general Election, a leaflet from Labour candidate Aidan Culhane running in Dublin South. The stark image of hospital trollyes are used to criticise the existing government.
Aidan Culhane didn’t win a seat.

‘Culture Factory’ Local Election Leaflet -Newbridge 2009 Local Elections


I received this today (many thanks) the donor notes…
“…here’s a plea to the voters of newbridge in the 2009 locals from Culture Factory who have been campaign for a dedicated creative and social centre in Newbridge, the leaflet succeeded in making youth facilities the major issue in the election and was delivered to over 8,000 homes by activists and members of the group.”

 

Wonderful posters for Seamas O’Neill -Independent -Dundrum -2009 Local Elections. March 26, 2010


Two wonderful and unusual posters for Independent candidate Seamas O’Neill for the 2009 Local Elections in Dundrum.
Seamus O’Neill polled 603 votes and failed to be elected. Still his posters were very noticable for their uniqueness during the campaign.

Graham Geraghty -Fine Gael -2007 GE Meath West


From the 2007 General Election, Meath footballing legend Graham Geraghty running for Fine Gael in Meath West.
It was a suprise to many when he won a nomination, especially as it meant Fine Gael running 3 candidates in a 3 seat constituency. Geraghtys running mates were Damien English and Peter Higgins. Damien English was elected.
Graham Geraghty polled 1284 votes.

Ciaran Murphy -Progressive Democrats – 1989 General Election Wicklow


From the 1989 General Election, former Fianna Fail TD Ciaran Murphy running for the Progressive Democrats in Wicklow. He served in the Dail from 1973 until losing his seat in the November 1982 General Election.
He polled 2109 votes and was overtaken by Workers Party Candidate Dermot Tobin before being eliminated.
The request to vote 2 and 3 for Fine Gael candidates George Jones and Godfrey Timmins was reflected in a massive 72% transfer to Fine Gael.

Bernie Malone -Labour Party -1994 European Elections


From the 1994 European Elections, Labour candidate Bernie Malone. Bernie Malone , a Malahide based councillor was co-opted to replace sitting MEP Barry Desmond in 1992. She was chosen as the Labour candidate at the selection convention only for Orla Guerin to be added to the ticket. Bernie Malone wasn’t happy and the two candidates developed a ‘rivralry’.
In the end it was Bernie Malone who won a seat.

I got sent these images and many thanks to the donor. A Sinn Fein poster with The ‘People Before Profit’ Slogan.  The other posters being  ‘Join Sinn Fein for a United Socialist Ireland’ , ‘ Eire Nua- Socialist Federal Republic’ , ‘ End Unemployment – Nationalise the Banks….’
This version of Sinn Fein / Republican Clubs was the precursor of Sinn Fein The Workers Party which became The Workers Party ….

‘Good Morning Voters of Dublin South-East’ -Michael McDowell -Progessive Democrat -1992 General Election March 24, 2010


From 1992 Progressive Democrat Michael McDowell bids to regain his seat, won in 1987, lost in 1989, in Dublin South East. Its polling day and this is has arrived overnight. It’s a practice that isn’t as prevalent as it used to be.
Over his career Michael McDowell never held his seat for more than one Dail term. (Michael McDowell at electionsireland.org)
