Marie Walker – Independent -Blackrock 1991 Local Elections November 21, 2009

Mentions the proposed Oil refinery in Dublin Bay, a proposed Shopping Centre on Blackrock Seafront and other proposals now long forgoten.

‘Politicians on the Fiddle:Vote Them Out-‘Campaign for Honesty in Politics’ 1991 November 17, 2009

1991 Local Elections and a leaflet from the ‘Campaign for Honesty in Politics’ to Vote Out the Big Parties. As tribunals have shown, they were more than correct about ‘Politicians on the Fiddle’.
I’m not sure who was behind the ‘Campaign for Honesty in Politics’, names such as Michael Smith and Colm MacEochaidh have been suggested, but it may not have been them. (It was in 1995 that the reward was offered that led to the tribunals.)
I had it filed away with Green Party material from Ballybrack if that provides a clue to anyone. The Green Party and The Workers Party were the only ‘Small’ Parties to contest Ballybrack and Blackrock. Sinn Fein contested the Dun Laoghaire ward.
Anyway I’d love to know who was behind the leaflet.
As you can see the issues covered are on the Southside of Dublin. Some of the lands mentioned may have been part of the now infamous ‘Jackson Way’ land. It also illustrates the cynical way councillors were using their vote. Also mentioned is the compensation that councils had to pay developers when they refused planning permission.

Marian White -Workers Party 1991 LE -Blackrock November 11, 2009

Two leaflets, the first coming after the election.
On the front Marian White thanks voters, she came within 28 votes of winning a seat in Blackrock (First Count Details Here). It illustrates the inroads made by the Workers Party at the time and the future potential.
On the reverse we have Eamon Gilmore proclaiming ‘In Dun Laoghaire The Workers Party are Winning’ detailing the vote increase and election of himself, Denis O’Callaghan, Colm Breathnach and how close Marian White came to being elected.
The Second leaflet was ‘and the last shall be first’…..

( Another leaflet produced by him was a heritage map of the area which I’ll post in due course). Theres still no sign of the Comminity Centre/ Swimmong pool proposed by hime either.
Ann Ormonde ran a number of times without success in General elections however has served a number of terms in the Seanad. Damien Fee is/was a school principal. Ann Ormonde was elected.

Tony Kett -Fianna Fail -1991 and 1985 Local Elections September 24, 2009

The Late Tony Kett from the 1991 and 1985 local elections. Kett was an integral part of the ‘Drumcondra Mafia’ and of course served in the Seanad.  The Leaflet from Bertie is interesting in that it outlines their friendship also doesn’t give the other candidates much of a look in either.

Sean O Siochain – Progressive Democrats – Glencullen 1991

A young Sean O Siochain stands for the PDs in their first local elections. He wasn’t elected.  Normally the inside pages would be packed with stuff, where here a large part is taken up by the fact that his Grandfather was ex Director General of the GAA.

Jim Ferry (Eddie Fullerton replacement)- Sinn Fein Buncrana 1991 September 19, 2009

This is poignant in that Jim Ferry replaced the Late Eddie Fullerton on the Sinn Fein ticket as Eddie Fullerton was murdered during the campaign. Jim Ferry himself passed away only recently.

The leaflet had the standard Sinn Fein 91 manifesto in the middle with a profile of Jim Ferry on the front and a message regarding Eddie Fullerton on the back.

Also another leaflet with reference to policy and that Ferry had been requested to run by the Fullerton family.

PJ Coghill, Sean Fallon, George Ledwith, Kieran Molloy, Egbert Moran, Cieran Temple -Fianna Fail- Athlone LEA 1991

From the 1991 Local Elections in Athlone. Fianna Fail candidates PJ Coghill, Sean Fallon, George Ledwith, Kieran Molloy, Egbert Moran and Cieran Temple. A strange layout of the candidates in this leaflet. Its unusual that there are no names beside the candidates pictures.I’d hazard there haven’t been too many ‘Egberts’ put before the electorate either.

John Colgan meets Esther Rantzen….but he has a past….. September 18, 2009

You got your picture taken once with Esther Rantzen ….so have it as the centrepiece of your campaign for the 1991 Local elections…..

Wonder did the electors know you had your picture taken with Alice Glenn and Michael Keating 10 years earlier though?
