“Stop the Motorways -Say the Greens”-Keith Redmond- Progressive Democrats 2007 GE Dublin North East June 25, 2011


From the 2007 General Election a flyer from Progressive democrat candidate Keith Redmond who was running in Dublin North East. On the reverse is one of a series of cartoons used by the PDs during that campaign with the theme being “Stop the Motorways -Say the Greens”.
Redmond polled 749 votes.

From the 1987 General Election a flyer from one of three Progressive Democrat candidates in Dun Laoghaire , Helen Keogh. In this the PDs first election, Keogh was initially seen as favourite to win a seat.That changed when Geraldine Kennedy was added to the Progressive Democrat ticket. Kennedy won a seat.
The leaflet focuses on Helen Keogh and not party policy.

“The PDs Get Things Done” – Vote No 1 Mary Harney – Progressive Democrats -2007 General Election Dublin Mid West June 3, 2011


From the 2007 General Election a leaflet from former Progressive Democrat leader Mary Harney who was running in Dublin Mid West. In what turned out to be her last election she polled 4,663 votes and held her seat.
The “targets for government 2007 to 2012” part makes grim reading considering our current situation.

Leaflet from Deirdre O’Donoghue- Progressive Democrats -Dundalk UDC North Ward 1994 Local Elections May 27, 2011


From the 1994 Local Elections (for Town Councils and UDCs) a leaflet from Progressive Democrat candidate Deirdre O’Donoghue who was running for a seat on Dundalk UDC in the North Ward. The then Dundalk Democrat Journalist polled 105 votes and failed to win a seat.

“The Tax and Spend Rainbow?” – Michael McDowell -Progressive Democrats -1997 General Election


From the 1997 General Election a flyer from Michael McDowell of the Progressive Democrats running in Dublin South East. In the leaflet he attacks the “The Tax and Spend Rainbow?” the rainbow being The Rainbow Coalition of Fine Gael, Labour and Democratic Left. He also mentions a 4 and a half party patchwork Rainbow that would have included The Greens and Independents.

Leaflet from Cait Keane -Progressive Democrats -1994 Dublin South Central By Election April 11, 2011


From the 1994 Dublin South Central by-election a leaflet from Progressive Democrat candidate Cait Keane. Keane polled 1,881 votes in a contest won by The Democratic Lefts Eric Byrne.
Keane was first elected to the Council in 1991 and has held a seat since. After the demise of the PDs she joined Fine Gael and canme close to winning a seat in Dublin South West in 2011.

“Put Real Talent In Europe” -John Dardis -Progressive Democrats- 1989 Euro Elections Leinster April 3, 2011


“Put Real Talent In Europe” writes Dessie O’Malley as he extols the virtues of John Dardis and The Progressive Democrats on this leaflet from the 1989 European Elections in the Leinster constituency. The Kildare based Dardis polled 31,623 (8.9%) votes but failed to win a seat.
In the aftermath of this election (held on the same day as a General Election) He was Nominated to the Seanad by then Taoiseach Charles Haughey. He was elected to the Seanad twice subsequently and was again a Taoiseachs nominee to the seanad in 2002.
He stood 3 times for the Dail without success.

Stephen O’Byrnes -Progressive Democrats -Dublin North East 1992 GE March 11, 2011


From the 1992 General Election a flyer for Progressive Democrat candidate Stephen O’Byrnes running in Dublin North East. He polled 2,034 votes and failed to win a seat.
O’Byrnes spent a number of years working for the PDs including a spell as Press secretary.

Flyer for Ben Doyle -Progressive Democrats- Dublin South Central-2007 GE March 9, 2011


From the 2007 General Election a flyer for Ben Doyle of The Progressive Democrats who ran in Dublin South Central. He polled 438 votes whilst his running mate Frank McNamara of Late Late show fame polled 474 votes.
In the 2009 Local Elections, Doyle ran unsuccessfully for Fianna Fail in the Ballyfermot Drimnagh ward.

An image of the now famous (infamous?) “One-Party Government? NO thanks!” poster used by the Progressive Democrats in the 2002 General Election Campaign.
It was accredited with turning the parties fortunes and helping them win eight seats.

From the 2004 Local Elections a leaflet from Progressive Democrats candidate in Rathmines Tony Williams asking
Who Can You Trust? -6 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before June 11th
The PDs were the answers to all six questions. Despite polling a decent enough 1,020 votes Williams failed to win a seat.
