John McManus- Workers Party- 1985 LE November 2, 2009

John McManus was a high profile and important member of  The Workers Party, he is married to Liz McManus (in 1985 John McManus would have been a far more important political figure than Liz).

The ERDO report refers to the ‘Eastern Region Settlement Strategy 2011’ report from 1985.  Presumably  it envisaged Longford and Cavn as being in the Dublin commuter belt, or hinterland as it would have been known back then.

Lots of local stuff from the North Wicklow area which may be of interest to those that know the area.

The Childrens allowance was £39, its now €166
‘84% of students now finish second level’ -Whats the figure now?
Water charges and Residential Property Tax both scrapped look to be on the way back.

Other bits of interest there too.

Fianna Fail National Collection 1985. November 1, 2009

Fianna Fail are gathering their war chest for the 1985 local elections…

“Please contribute generously to our collectors when they call.” asks Charlie.
At the last elections Fianna Fail were afraid to call to the door looking for your vote….
.. can you imagine them calling to the door looking for your money?

“If you are not at home when they call please post your contribution to Fianna Fail Headquarters ….
Also “When making your contribution ask the collector for identification”
Nothing as to who to make a Cheque out to? and I cant help but imagine certain individuals ripping open envelopes with glee.

Olga Bennett- ‘Why Me?’- Fianna Fail 1992

1992 and Dubli Central had been dramatically redrawn. Twice Dublin West candidate and Cllr for Ballyfermot Senator Olga Bennett finds herself on the Fianna Fail ticket with Bertie Ahern and Dermot Fitzpatrick.
Despite using the title of Linda Mrtins Eurovision winning song as a slogan she polled 1,087 votes and Aherns healthy surplus wasn’t enough to help herself or Dermot Fitzpatrick over the line.

Fine Gael ‘Yes’ to Bail Referendum 1996.

1996 and the Rainbow government were getting tough on crime.  A number of cases had arisen where the culprits had been out on bail. So the bail laws had to be changed, which in turn needed a referendum.

Win £10 – ‘Dun Laoghaire People’ – Eamon Gilmore -Workers Party 1986 October 29, 2009

A couple of nice things in this from Summer 1986. A number of Workers Party  ‘papers’ had the ‘People’ title. A ‘Dublin People’ was produced for the 1994 European elections and of course the Workers Party weekly paper was ‘Tomorrows People’.
This was produced in part as a reaction to the proposed introduction of Water Rates. There’s a great competition to win £10. I wonder how many entries B Maguire had through the door and indeed who won?
So on the front they were giving away money , however on the reverse they were looking for money! … Whilst others had big business and Unions to fund them, The Workers Party relied ‘entirely on contributions from our members, supporters and friends’.
874 houses in Dun Laoghaire didn’t have bathrooms, yet there were over 1000 on the dole. Why not get them to repair the housing stock?

Sinn Fein -‘Empowering Communities against Drugs’

Not sure exactly when this was produced but propably around 2002. Its one of the most practical and relevant leaflets I’ve found, especially compared with other stuff such as spoting fixture giudes you get from politicians and parties.

1997- Bertie- “A Young Leader for a Young Country” ‘..in politics only to serve the people’

“A Young Leader for a Young Country” who on the inside of this doc is  “A New Leader for a New Century”. The profile of Bertie “.. he is in politics only to serve the people” and other plaudits that in hindsight ring hollow.

This was one of a series of leaflets for the 1997 election produced by Fianna Fail. Some were on Crime, some on Drugs, some on Job creation and so on. The fact that there was a whole leaflet dedicated to their leader shows how much they played on ordinary Bertie who is in touch with the people. He was that important to them.
