Leaflet from Kevin Cronin- Labour – Blackrock 1985 Local Elections November 26, 2009

Kevin Cronins main leaflet from the 1985 local elections. He polled well but was unlucky not to take a seat.
It’s not often these days you hear sentiments such as ‘Working to change the social conditions which cause our young people to turn to crime.’

I’d love to have seen the proposed ‘Legal guidelines for the National Finances to ensure that politicians can no longer make the type of economic decisions which were taken in the late ’70s which caused our present economic plight’.

Pat Rabbitte – Workers Party – Dublin South West 1987 November 25, 2009

From the 1987 General election in Dublin South West. He mentions an awful lot that came to pass, such the the Hospital, Luas, Town Centre and so on. He polled 5,086 votes and failed to win a seat. He was elected in 1989 though.
The leaflet itself is fading so had to play around with it to make it readable.

Orla Guerin -Labour -Dublin 1994

1994 Dublin European Elections and a mini sensation is caused by the addition of RTE Journalist Orla Guerin to the Labour Party Ticket.
The addition, supposedly at Dick Springs request, caused friction within the party and between the candidates.
The sitting MEP Bernie Malone, who had been co-opted to replace Barry Desmond, had been selected at the Selection convention was none too pleased. It was one of the most memorable campaigns for rivalry between candidates…. All sorts of rumours went around at the time.
In the end Malone held on to her seat and it was Guerin, despite polling well, who lost out.
Orla Guerin joined the BBC in 1995 and has worked there since.

This is her missive from the 1992 General Election.
Over the years a number of Independent Councillors such as Mae Sexton and Kate Walsh joined the PDs.
Here though Mae ‘never felt that joining a political party would accomodate the free expression of my points of view’.
She was also opposed to Service charges and a number of other items that could have seemed incompatible with the PDs.
In 2010 she joined the Labour Party. Another councillor to do so was John Kelly in neighbouring Roscommon.

How apt was this, If all of the below propositions had been in place at the time, we may not be in as bad a state as we are now.

Pat Upton- Labour- Dublin South Central 1997 November 4, 2009

The late Pat Uptons last election campaign. This leaflet gives the mark of the man , his experience, his attitude to fairness in Society and you can see that his politics is in the mould of the late Frank Cluskeys. His early passing at just 54 years of age deprived the public of an excellent representative.
