‘ahead…. with Hederman’ -Carmencita Hederman- Independent 1985 Local Elections Pembroke. March 5, 2010

From the 1985 local Elections in the Pembroke Ward, Independent Community Candidate Carmencita Hederman. The picture is of her going over the ‘new’ East Link bridge.
Carmencita Hederman was first elected to the council in 1974 and served until 1999. She was Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1987–88 during the Dublin Millennium celebrations. In 1989 she was elected to the Seanad for the University of Dublin Seat and served one term.
The Leaflet below gives an outline of her activities and career.
The picture on the bottom of the leaflet is of a building at the bottom of Eglington road (opposite Donnybrook Rugby ground). There was controversy when the building was built and given planning permission. This was then added to by the fact that once built the building could not find a tenant for a long period of time.
Her daughter Wendy Hederman was elected to the council for the Progressive Democrats in 2004.

The pink almost takes away from the serious issues he mentions.

Pat Gallagher, Sean O’Brien,Lar Byrne, Joe Feery, Ann Starling -Labour Party -1999 LE, Offaly CC, Tullamore UDC March 4, 2010

From the 1999 local elections a flyer for Labour candidates Senator Pat Gallagher and Cllr Sean O’Brien running for Offaly County Council. On the reverse the Labour Candidates for Tullamore UDC, Pat Gallagher, Sean O’Brien,Lar Byrne, Joe Feery and Ann Starling are all shown.

Pat Gallagher resigned from politics around 2000 to take up the position of Director of Community and Enterprise with Westmeath County Council. He is now the County Manager of Offaly County Council, having previously held a similar post with Galway County Council. He had been elected to the Dail in 1992 and lost his seat in 1997. He was elected to the Senate in 1997. (His record at electionsireland.org)
The Labour result in Tullamore UDC was a massive victory for them as Labour won four of the nine seats (result at electionsireland.org). Pat Gallagher, Sean O’Brien,Lar Byrne and Joe Feery were elected with Ann Starling missing out.
Incidentally a ‘Miriam O’Callaghan’ was elected for Fianna Fail there too (although I gather no relation).
Theres nothing on the flyer indicating policy, its just photos of the candidates.

It was the last day that The Democratic Left appeared on a ballot paper (There was a by-election in Limerick East on the same day).
Joe Holohan polled just 225 votes coming in behind amongst others the Christian Solidarity Party.(result at electionsireland.org) The vote surely helped speed along the merger with the Labour party which happened less than a year later.

Tom Doodle Monster Election Rally photo-Listowel 1951 General Election. February 26, 2010

Found this old pic at home (I have also seen it in various books on Listowel and North Kerry).
This is a photo of a rally held in Listowel for the election of ‘Tom Doodle’. Prior to the 1951 General Election John B Keane had set up a fictitious political party, the Independent Coulogeous Party, complete with a fictitious candidate, Tom Doodle, who appeared at a ‘Monster Rally’ in Listowel. The picture is from that rally.

A Fergal Keane article about Tom Doodle explains it all… or almost all.

Theres also a short youtube clip of John B Keane talking about Tom Doodle.
I’ve also attached a pic of a class in Listowel taken during the fifties. Notice how many boys are shoeless…

Charles Haughey- Message to Electorate Fianna Fail 1987

The generic Fianna Fail 1987 leaflet which would have had candidate details inside. The Message from Charles Haughey to the electorate is interesting.
In similar enough times to now, Haughey had an emphasis on providing employment.
“..People are looking for leadership, for the restoration of confidence and better management of their affairs..”

*A 6 page version of The Programme for National Recovery’ is posted here

Enid O’Dowd -Green Alliance -Pembroke 1985 Local Elections February 24, 2010

From the 1985 local elections, the Green Party candidate for the Pembroke Ward, Enid O’Dowd.
Enid O’Dowd polled well but with the likes of well established community activist Carmencita Hederman on the ballot paper it was unlikely she would get in. The Green Party won a seat in Pembroke in the 1991 local Elections through Claire Wheeler.
More recently Enid O’Dowd has been doing some great work on Oireachtas expenses with a number of articles in the Irish Times and an appearance on Liveline.
