Sean Downey -Sinn Fein -Newbridge TC 2009 LE

Sean Downey ran for Sinn Féin in the 2009 local elections for Newbridge Town Council and Kildare County Council. He was the first SF candidate in over 20 years in the town and recieved 662 votes in the county and 245 in the town, Sean was not elected.
Also included are the Sinn Fein European Election candidates Kathleen Funchion and Tomas Sharkey.

Roger Garland -Green Alliance -1987 Dublin South March 31, 2010
From the 1987 General Election in Dublin South the Green candidate Roger Garland. Garland later became a Ireland’s first Green TD in the 1989 General Election, before losing his seat in 1992.
He had also stood in the Ecology party’s initial electoral outing in November 1982 getting 950 votes in Dublin South.
In 1987 the Green Alliance policies were very much left of centre. There was no mention of such thing as Global Warming or depleting ozone layers. From memory of the times Acid Rain was what we were really scared of. The European Greens got a far bigger mention then in Green Literature, than they do now.

Batt O’Keefe -Fianna Fail -Cork South Central 1992 General Election.
From 1992 Fianna Fail candidate Batt O’Keefe running in Cork South Central. Batt O’Keefe was re-elected having lost his seat in 1989 and has held it ever since.. He had been elected on this his first attempt at the Dail in 1987.
In 2004 Bat O’Keefe was appointed Junior Minister at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. In 2008 Brian Cowen appointed him as Minister for Education and Science and in 2010 he was appointed Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation.
He played in the half forward line in Corks Munster Under 21 winning Gaelic Football team of 1965.

Election Leaflet for Tony O’Hara -H-Block -1981 Dublin West March 30, 2010
Firstly many thanks to the donor.
From the 1981 General Election Tony O’Hara (also refered to as Anthony),running on a H Block ticket in Dublin West.
Tony O’Hara was the brother of deceased hunger striker Patsy O’Hara. He recieved 3,034 votes.
For those like myself who lived through the time of the Hunger Strike this leaflet brings back memories. Memories of the posters of the Hunger Strikers,the posters of Maggie Thatcher Wanted for murder, people wearing Black armbands, black flags on lampposts and the other protest marches in Dublin at the time.
In the leaflet, amongst others things are a biography of Tony O’Hara and The Hunger Strikers Five Demands
1. The right to wear their own clothes.
2. The right to refrain from compulsory do prison work, use the time for education in vocational, craft or culture fields.
3. Free association with other political prisoners
4. One letter, one parcel and one visit per week.
5. Restoration of remission of sentence lost through the protest.

Sean Kelly -Fine Gael -2009 European Elections- South (Munster)
From the 2009 European elections in Munster, Fine Gael candidate, the former President of the GAA Sean Kelly. Sean Kelly polled well and was elected.
As Uachtarán of Cumann Luthchleas Gael Sean Kelly credited himself with the opening on Croke Park to Soccer and Rugby.
This leaflet is Kerry centric with testaments from Jimmy Deenihan, Tom Sheehan and Senator Paul Coughlan

Sean Butler -Labour Party -1999 European Elections Leinster
From the 1999 European Elections in Leinster the Labour candidate Sean Butler. He polled 38,112 votes and missed out on being elected.

Christy Dunne, John Noonan -Sinn Fein -1987 GE Dublin South West March 29, 2010
From the 1987 General Election, Christy Dunne and John Noonan running for Sinn Fein in Dulin South West. Christy Dunne got 378 votes whilst John Noonan got 1001 votes. Neither were elected.
The Leaflet gives mention of the issues of the time, Unemployment , housing and the establishment of a 32 county Socialist Republic.
Ruairi Quinn -Labour Party -2002 Dublin South East
From the 2002 General Election campaig n in Dublin South East, the then Labour Party leader Ruairi Quinn. Quinn was comfotably elected.
The image of Ruair Quinn waving whilst Kevin Humphreys, Mary Freehill and Dermot Lacey stay cool and calm is one I’ve always liked.

Rachel Doherty -Fianna Fail -2009 LE -Boyle Roscommon March 28, 2010
From the 2009 local elections, Fianna Fail candidate Rachel Doherty running in the Boyle electoral area.
Rachel Doherty , daughter of former Fianna Fail TD and minister Sean Doherty, was first elected in 2004 and was returned again in 2009.

Tony Kett , Ernie Beggs,Tom Stafford -Fianna Fail -1991 LE North Inner City
From the 1991 Local Elections Fianna Fail candidates Tony Kett , Ernie Beggs and Tom Stafford. The late Tony Kett and Tom Stafford were both elected.
The Galway born Kett was a close friend of Bertie Ahern and was elected to the Seanad in 1997 where he served until his passing in 2009.

Walter Lacey -Progressive Democrat -2007 GE Carlow -Kilkenny
From the 2007 General Election in Carlow -Kilkenny Progressive Democrat candidate Walter Lacey. Carlow based Walter Lacey polled 1,073 votes and failed to be elected.
Having been a County Councillor since 1989, Lacey was elected in 2009 as an Independent.
In 1987 Carlow Kilkenny returned a PD TD Martin Gibbons.

“…here’s a plea to the voters of newbridge in the 2009 locals from Culture Factory who have been campaign for a dedicated creative and social centre in Newbridge, the leaflet succeeded in making youth facilities the major issue in the election and was delivered to over 8,000 homes by activists and members of the group.”
