Tom Simpson -Green Party -2002 Dublin Central December 15, 2009

I think this is from 2002 Dublin Central (A Tom Simpson also stood in Dublin North West for the Greens in 1997). Tom Simpson, a founder member of the Green Party and also an active Trade Unionist.
Regarding the Fianna Fail government of the time…
‘They still want to poison our air with incinerators’ ………

Betty Reeves, Michael Dunphy -Green Party- Blackrock 1991 LE December 12, 2009

In the 1991 local elections in the Blackrock Ward, the late Betty Reeves was elected to the council having polled 491 First preferences, well short of the 1,623 quota. She served one term. As written on the leaflet she was a founder member of the Green Party. Her niece is married to John Gormley. I think the Newtown Park/ Carysfort bus committee was to do with the lack of service and the state of the buses used, on the 6 and 6A routes.
In 1991 Greens were still thought of as outside the mainstream, yet here we had a candidate Michael Dunphy who ran his own business, was an active member of the GAA and so on.
Amongst the issues covered are ‘The Owen Rua proposals for a huge infill and a 630 unit luxury housing estate out in the bay” and opposition to ‘Dalkey gun club’….

The Waterboys/Green Alliance benefit concert Oct 1987 November 26, 2009

Its 1987 and the Waterboys do a benefit concert for the Green Alliance with the proceeds ‘going to finance a Green Road Show which will tour the country..’
The concert itself was in the Olympic Ballroom, a few of the songs from the forthcoming Fishermans Blues were played. I think The Sawdoctors may have been the support.(I’m informed the Benzini Brothers were the support)
A Windscale Fire 30th Anniversary Demo, organised by CND, outside the British Embassy is also advertised.
Not too often Chief Seattle gets quoted in Irish political material either…
Probably a misprint too in “We Greens have a saying ‘THINK GLOBALLY, ACT GLOBALLY’“…. should surely read ‘THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY”

Tony Ryan _Green Alliance- 1983 Dublin Central By-Election November 15, 2009

This was published in part here previously, but given its amongst the oldest Green material I have, I figured it was worth a post of its own.
A few things here such as the TDs annual salary being £16,400. The honeycomb graphic with all the interconnecting Green ideas. To ‘Outlaw Land Speculation’ was suggested here and its an awful pity that never happened.
Ryan got 458 votes.

Phil Kearney -Green- 1985 LE Ballybrack November 4, 2009

This is from the 1985 Local election,  Ballybrack ward.  Apologies that the scan is so poor. I’ll try and redo it in due course.
Looking back a quarter of a century on, a number of things stand out, amongst them,
‘Stop and Reverse the Growth of Dublin’
A sign of the times too that Acid Rain was seen as the big threat as Global Warming wasn’t known about.
‘Energy Efficient homes- major insulation scheme needed to stop hypothermia, ‘
‘An end to Land Rezoning / Speculation scandal. Tax unused property.’
‘Double Jobbing- Councillors should not also be T.Ds or Euro M.P.s’.
Sellafield still known as Windscale.
Also the reference to Bishopscourt peace camp, which was a camp beside bishopscourt radar base in Co Down that ran from 1983 to 1986.
Theres a pamphlet from Bishopscourt here

Paul Gogarty -Green Party- 1992 Dublin West October 25, 2009

Paul Gogarty in 1992. Nice little history of the Greens in Dublin West as well as some catchy slogans…”Other Parties try to steal our clothes but they dont fit” .
Nothing about Deputy Stagg in this either….

Adi Roche -1997 Presidential Election October 8, 2009

Adi Roche, the highly respected Founder of The Chernobyl Children’s Project ran in the 1997 Presidential election. She  had been nominated by the Labour Party, Democratic Left and Green Party.

She was expected to do well and was an early favourite to replace Mary Robinson. However stories of Bullying by a former workmate surfaced during the campaign and her chance went.

Patricia McKenna 1992-Dublin Central October 2, 2009

Patricia McKenna in what I think was her first electoral outing.  She was Roger Garlands Dail Adviser and co-secretary of the European Greens.
As an Artist I presume she did the wonderful cartoon herself.

Green Party Membership Form 1989 September 23, 2009

I got this in September 1989. Mentions Roger Garlands recent election to the Dail. Its also far more left wing and idealistic than todays Green Policies. No mention of Global Warming as it wasn’t known about then (or at least by most people).

Roger Garland- Ireland’s First Green TD -1992 Dublin South September 18, 2009

Roger Garland made History when he became Ireland first ever Green TD in the 1989 General Election. He was elected in Dublin South. He lost his seat however in 1992. His first preference vote went from 4771 in 1989 to 2258 in 1992.

Here we have a 1992 flyer.

John Gormley 1997- “A leader for our times” September 12, 2009

At this stage from the policies the Greens had moved to a more practical viewpoint.  The 1997 election is also when Gormley first won a Dail seat.

What I love about this though is that it includes gushing quotes from the media , “A leader for our times” is good but the best in hindsight has to be  “Gormley has been credited with much of the Greens success” ….. and maybe their demise?

Dan Boyle 2002 General Election Cork South Central September 10, 2009

From the 2002 General Election a leaflet for Green Party candidate Dan Boyle who was elected in Cork South Central. Boyle polled 4,952 votes.

Christopher Fettes -Green Alliance – 1984 Euro Elections September 9, 2009

Christopher Fettes from the 1984 European Election Dublin Constituency.
Fettes is a hugely important figure in the Irish Green Party. Not alone was he a founding member of the now Green Party, It was Christopher Fettes who ‘called’ the initial meeting in 1981 that led to the foundation of The Ecology Party… which became the Green Alliance/An Comhaontas Glas and was renamed again as the Green Party/An Comhaontas Glas.
