Marie ‘The Shamrock’ Murphy -Fianna Fail -Kanturk 2004 Local Elections September 14, 2010

From the 2004 Local Elections a leaflet for Fianna Fail candidate Marie “The Shamrock” Murphy running in Kanturk. She was elected although lost her seat in 2009.
Many thanks to the sender who notes…
The name ‘Shamrock’ comes from a pub in the village of Kiskeam in North Cork, which I think her husband owned at one point. Her husband John B had been a councillor but due to ill health resigned and Marie took the seat on the council.

Happened upon this 1999 press release from Ivor Callely where he urges a ‘Tattooing and piercing info campaign’

Given his current difficulties his press release sounds even more bizarre. There must have been an uproar at the time on Joe Duffy about Tatoos and Piercings.

Noel O’Flynns Website from 1999

Not all links work and things may be slow to load…
To be fair Mary Coughlans site wasn’t too bad.

Dessie Larkin , Peter Patton -Independent Fianna Fail -2004 Letterkenny Town Council

From the 2004 Local Elections a leaflet for Independent Fianna Fail candidates for Letterkenny Town Council Dessie Larkin and Peter Patton. Dessie Larkin was elected but Peter Patton missed out.

The aims and objectives of the party are fairly good. There’s little or no mention of the British presence in the North which was a mainstay of their early policies until the peace process.

Upon its launch the then Sports Minister Michael McGimspey said his initiative was not aimed at short-term solutions.
“I want us to visualise where we would like to see soccer in 10-15 years from now, and beyond, so that together we can map the way ahead and put our football on a firm footing for the future.”

Things have possibly got worse since.

‘One man and his dog’ -Eamon Gilmore -Democratic Left -1997 GE Dun Laoghaire.

One of my favourite Eamon Gilmore Leaflets. This one is from the 1997 General election when the then Minister of State for the Marine was running for the Democratic Left.
The casual picture of him walking the dog on the beach (Killiney beach?) to him purposefully strolling around the new ferry terminal in Dun Laoghaire.
There is also small pictures of him doing activities such as fishing and meeting people like Neil Kinnock.
The ‘NIREX dump’ refered to was a proposed underground nuclear waste dump near Sellafield.

The candidate and her Labour colleague Aodhan O Riordain are pictured with former Shamrock Rovers and Ireland star Johnny Giles. Giles is now of course best known for his role as a pundit with RTE.
Continuing the RTE theme, this leaflet was featured on the RTE soap Fair City during the run up to the election, which caused a bit of a furore at the time.
Many thanks to the sender.
