… what you maybe meant to keep…

Socialist Student (Workers Party) – 1991 September 27, 2009

An Edition of Socialist Student from 1991. It was to be the “Autumn of Action”….  Features an article by Prionsias De Rossa “…I see no role for the Workers Party as another middle of the road populist party, trying to be all things to all people“…. He writes, Months before the Split.

A wonderful looking Super Hero called ‘Condoman’, alas we cant make out his full  catchphrase. A Trip on “The Condom Train ” is advertised too.

The article on the condoms mentioned Student Referendums in Maynooth on the condom issue. These may well bring back memories to those who studied there at the time. It was always my regret that I never took one of the “Self Control -Not Condoms” posters to add to my collection…

Noel O’Hanrahan ‘Stop The Rot’ – Dublin North Central 1992 September 26, 2009

An unusual leaflet (and he had posters similar to the main picture around at the time too.)  In 1992 he reckoned “.. by reducing expenditure on the border by 100 million pounds….creating 30,000 new jobs in Dublin from this saving…” Lots more good plans in the leaflet. Nice Dig at Taca in it too.
For his troubles Noel got 363 votes….. Still, its the picture at the front that makes it!

Pamphlet advertising a meeting in Cork in 1995. “Peace Through British Withdrawal”. Indicates Sinn Fein policy of the time , “Central to the resolution…. they will have to withdraw from our country….”

Michael Keating, Kevin Byrne -Fine Gael 1985 Local Elections.

This is from the 1985 local elections, A year later he defected to join the Progressive Democrats. He was the only Fine Gael TD to do so, although later on left the PDs and rejoined Fine Gael.

His reputation took a turn when in later years when, amongst other things, he made a settlement with the CAB over unpaid taxes and was also mentioned in a serious Fraud case.

Áine Ní Chonaill- Immigration Control Platform 2002 Dublin South Central. September 25, 2009

Áine Ní Chonaill was one of the first people to come out and publicly question immigration. The ICP is vehemently anti asylum seeker and felt that Ireland was easy for them to get Asylum.

These two leaflets are as vile as you will come across…. (In Ireland anyhow)

William Coughlan -Pembroke LEA 1985

This is one of the oddest looking leaflets I have. Not too many candidates have drawings of themselves on their leaflets. Coughlan polled 87 votes.

Olive Braiden -Fianna Fail -Euro 94 Dublin

Olive Braiden was a surprise choice to many as one of Fianna Fails 3 candidates in Dublin 1994.  Widely known for her work with the Rape Crisis Centre she failed in her attempt for election.

The candidate is pictured with amongst others Maire Geoghan Quinn.

Aengus O Snodaigh -Sinn Fein – Dublin South East 1987 GE

A boyish Aengus in his first General election outing in 1987. This Leaflet has the Sinn Fein Policies at the back and also included the standard 1987 Sinn Fein Literature with a profile of Aengus.

An Ogra Sinn Fein Leaflet from probably around the early 90s, maybe late 80s. Reference to AnCO and having no TDs (1997 was when they won the seat in Cavan Monaghan).

1989 – The Parade of Innocence September 24, 2009

25 years ago, A parade to celebrate the release of the Guildford Four and to continue to the pressure for the release of the Birmingham Six. The Birmingham Six were eventually released in March 1991.

The Birmingham Six, Guildford Four and The Maguire Seven were amongst the wrongful (and plainly so) convictions of Irish men and women in Britain during the troubles. Their cases were constantly covered by media for years before their eventual release and exoneration.

Ray Crotty – Dublin- 1989 European Elections.

Ray (Raymond) Crottys 1989 leaflet. It was Crotty who took the case that stopped the Dail ratifying the Single European Act, so it is because of that Supreme Court Judgement we now have Referendums on all EU treaties…. How those in power must rue the day he took that case.

He was also an opponent of Irelands entry into the EEC.  The Trustees listed are a varied and interesting bunch in Kevin Boland, Hubert Butler, Desmond Fennell, Noreen Kearney, Sr Stanislaus Kennedy, Matt Merrigan and Senator John Robb.

Divorce Referendum 1986- The Association of Lawyers Against the Amendment

Quite a detailed legalistic document  from the Association of Lawyers against the Amendment. It is difficult at times to read in its original form never mind after going through my scanner.

This goes through the proposed amendments wording and then argues against it. It does give a more balanced Legal arguement (which wouldn’t be too difficult) against the Amendment other than ‘Divorce is wrong’ and so on.

Niamh Nic Mhathúna (now Niamh Ui Bhriain) of Youth Defence – Independent -Dublin Central 1992

Dublin Central 1992 leaflets of Niamh Nic Mhathúna, involved in Youth Defence, daughter of Una Bean nic Mhathuna of “G’way ye wife-swapping sodomites’ fame. The Leaflets are actually printed by Youth Defence. She is also supported by ‘The Family Rights Council’ and ‘The Housewives Union’.

The State  is ‘Anti-Mother’, looks like she reckons the EEC is anti family too.

Fianna Fail- Dublin Central 1992 – Bertie Ahern, Olga Bennett, Dermot Fitzpatrick

1992 Dublin Central, with redrawn boundaries, the constituency is reduced to 4 seats and of the 3 sitting Fianna Fail TDs,  John Stafford moves to Dublin North Central (where he lost out). Bertie romps home but neither of his running mates are elected despite Fianna Fail
having almost two quotas.
A number of Flyers wuith profiles of the candidates , ‘Bertie Gets the job done’, whilst Olga Bennett was ‘born into a Fianna Fail family’,whilst Dermot Fitzpatrick was ‘born ,reared and lives in the constituency’.

Tom Leonard – Fianna Fail -1983 Dublin Central By-Election

The by election was caused by the death of George Colley. After much insistence by Bertie , former TD  Tom Leonard, was selected as the Fianna Fail candidate. He duly won the seat. In the Message from Fainna Fail Leader Charles Haugheys he appears to take full credit for the Gregory deal as if he did it off his own bat.  The By-Election was Fine Gael candidate and future MEP Mary Bannottis first electoral outing.

Tony Kett -Fianna Fail -1991 and 1985 Local Elections

The Late Tony Kett from the 1991 and 1985 local elections. Kett was an integral part of the ‘Drumcondra Mafia’ and of course served in the Seanad.  The Leaflet from Bertie is interesting in that it outlines their friendship also doesn’t give the other candidates much of a look in either.
