Joseph Curley, Paul Hayes, Brendan Holland, Patrick D Ryan – Chamber of Commerce candidates- 1974 Local Elections Galway November 1, 2010
These are from the 1974 Local Elections for Galway Borough Council. Joseph Curley, Paul Hayes, Brendan Holland and Patrick D Ryan running for the local Chamber of Commerce.
As was common in many Irish Towns (Sligo and Thurles were two others that had Chamber of Commerce candidates and councillors in the past) The local Chamber of Commerce fielded candidates in the Local Elections.
In this election the Galway Chamber of Commerce went into this election with 2 councillors and both lost their seats. It was one of the shocks of the election locally.
As far as I’m aware the Galway Chamber of Commerce have not fielded any candidates since 1974.
Another one taken from the Galway Adertiser.

From 2003 a Fine Gael Policy document ‘Action On Alcohol Abuse’.
Its opening paragraph being….
“Ireland’s attitude to alcohol has got to change. We can no longer dismiss alcohol ‘as part of who we are’. We are paying a huge price
with the health and lives of our young people. Paying through clogged up accident and emergency wards. Paying through higher
crime rates and paying through our taxes. Without proper action this situation will, without doubt, worsen.”
I’ve Uploaded it in *.pdf HERE or else click on the image to open it.

Interview with Christopher Morris of the ‘Community Democrats of Ireland’- 1979 European Elections October 23, 2010
The Community Democrats of Ireland are a party I know little about. There is little or nothing on them online. They fielded 3 candidates in the 1979 European Elections. (ElectionsIreland.org)
The three were, Christopher Morris in Conaught Ulster, Kevin Clear in Dublin and Michael B Crowe in Munster. All polled poorly.
The below is an interview with Christopher Morris, the party candidate in Connaught Ulster. He mentions the Liberals standing in Northern Ireland. Presumably that was James Murray who also polled poorly.
The Clipping is taken from the wonderful Galway Advertiser Site.

‘A Fair Trial For The Murrays’ Poster from circa 1977 October 21, 2010
First off, many thanks to the sender.
The poster is related to ‘The Murray Case’, where husband and wife Noel and Marie Murray were convicted of the Capital Murder of Garda Michael Reynolds in St Annes Park in 1975. As it was Capital murder both were sentenced to die by the non jury Special Criminal Court.
“A provisional date was set for their execution, and they spent several months in the uncertainty of the death-cell before their appeal resulted in a substitution of a sentence of life imprisonment. The appeal court ruled that as the Murray couple, who had been involved in a bank robbery, were not aware at the time that Guard Reynolds — who had tried to apprehend them while off duty and in plain clothes — was in fact a Garda, the question of capital murder could not arise. Thus, the death sentence was set aside in this case, before it became necessary for the Fine Gael/Labour coalition to make the final decision on the matter.
We do not know if the Cosgrave Government of the day would have allowed the hanging of the Murray husband and wife, given the strong “law and order” stance of that administration. We do know that there was strong pressure from some Garda opinion at the time which insisted that the “law be allowed to take its c o u r s e ” , while other subversive outrages at the time made it difficult for the Government to be seen to be weak.It was going to be a major test The Cosgrave Government.”
*from a Galway Advertiser article
The case was covered by the RTE programme Garda ar Lár in 2008.
