Then Independent Councillor, now Fianna Fail TD Christy O’Sullivan from 2002 in Cork South West. (Thanks to Christy for sending me these leaflets in 2002) With Neighbouring Kerry South getting all sorts due to Jackie Healy-Rae, Christy O’Sullivan polled a good 3,609 votes in 2002 before topping the polling 2007 having joined Fianna Fail.

Letter from Shane Ross to TCD graduates with “Business or Computer backgrounds ” . Amongst whats covered is Ross claiming partial responsibility for changing the “tax rules, to give employees of hi-tech companies incentives by way of attractive options…”
Paddy Madigan-Independent -1997 Dun Laoghaire December 29, 2009
Former Fianna Fail Councillor Paddy Madigan from the 1997 General Election where he stood as an Independent in Dunn Laoghaire. He had also stood as an Independent in the 1994 European Elections. He polled 1082 votes.

Noel O’Gara -The Planning Reform Party 2007 GE December 19, 2009
The 2007 Manifesto of Noel O’Gara, current owner of Dartmouth Square. He is the only Candidate to have stood for The Planning Reform Party. In 2007 he stood in Dublin South East(27 votes), Laois Offaly (45 votes), Longford Westmeath (84 votes), Roscommon South Leitrim (66 votes) and
he also stood in the 2009 Dublin South by-election (172 votes).
Noel O’Gara is not a fan of planning permission.

A Letter from Carmencita Hederman looking for help and funds for the 1985 Local Elections. Carmencita Hederman served from 1974 to 1999 on Dublin City Council as an Independent. She was also elected to the Senate for Trinity in 1989.
Vincent Ballyfermot Jackson -Dublin South Central 2002 December 14, 2009
In the past 20 years Dublin has had two Lord Mayors which have changed their names to include a locality, Sean Dublin Bay Loftus and Vicent Ballyfermot Jackson.
This is a Jacksons flyer from the 2002 General Election. A good deal of it is taken up with a message from Tony Gregory.
Jacksons Ballyfermot base has been moved between \Dublin West, Dublin Central and Dublin South Central over the recent past.

Tom Foxe- Roscommon Hospital Action Committee Flyer from Roscommon 1989 December 12, 2009
From the 1989 General Election where Tom Foxe of the Roscommon Hospital Action Committee was elected. Roscommon Hospital Action Committee had a number of councillors elected in 2009, so twenty years on its still an issue.
The leaflet is printed in the Roscommon colours.

Nicky Kelly -Independent -Wicklow 1997 December 11, 2009
Growing up it was common to see ‘Free Nicky Kelly’ graffiti around the place. In 1978 Kelly, a then IRSP member was wrongly convicted along with Osgur Breatnach and Brian McNally of The 1976 Sallins Train Robbery. After a campaign for his release, he was release on “humanitarian grounds’ in 1984 and was pardoned in 1992.
Here having been elected to Arklow UDC in 1994 (topping the poll), Kelly stood in the 1995 Wicklow by-election. These leaflets are from the 1997 General Election, where he polled almost 5000 votes but failed to get in.

Brendan Ryan – “A Voice for the Voiceless” NUI Seanad 1989 December 6, 2009
Brendan Ryan, former Independent Senator and former Labour Party Senator (as well as European and General Election candidate) in 1989.
In 1989 we faced similar challenges than those we face at the minute. This leaflet from Ryan is especially interesting as Ryan challenged the economic consensus of the time.
He finsihes with the lines….
“The cruel values of selfish competition, greed, individualism and indifference, which currently dominate our country are resisted. Our country must be drawn together and this can only be done if the cult of greed and selfishness is resisted.”
Benny Cooney- Independent- Athlone TC 2009 December 4, 2009
For those of you like myself who are consumed with all things elections, Benny Cooneys name may ring a bell.
He polled 18 votes in the 1998 Dublin North by-election, 21 votes in the 1996 Dublin West by-election, has stood on at least eleven occasions and in that time has a top vote of 239 votes. (Benny at ElectionsIreland.org)
Yet theres not much wrong with his policies….
Joseph C. Lalor – Greystones Town Commission 1985 December 2, 2009
A leaflet and a letter from Independent Community Candidate Joe Lalor for the 1985 Greystones Town Commission elections. Lalor later stood for the PDs.
Amongst the items mentioned are the coming of ‘Advanced Micro Devices’ who were to provide a projected 1000 jobs. That never happened, I dont know why.
By 2011 A.D. (sounded a rather long time in the future) the Greystones / Delgany district had a projected population of 42,500. I think its around 30,000 at the minute.

Dr Bill Tormey -Independent- Dublin North West 1997 November 28, 2009
The original ‘Dr Bill’. Bill Tormey, regarded as ‘outspoken’, has been a candidate for the Labour Party, stood as an Independent Labour candidate, stood as an Indpendent and is now a Fine Gael councillor. He’s also a Shamrock Rovers fan!

Charlie Hennessy -Independent -Cork South Central 1987 November 23, 2009
1987 Cork South Central Independent Candidate, the Late Charlie Hennessy (Charles Hennessy). Plenty of his proposals would be more than applicable now.
Hennessys obituary in the Examiner gives an idea of how well respected and thought of he was. He polled 1,585 votes.
