David Healy, a prominent Green member/councillor in Dublin for many years. The mention of Esperanto is interesting as a number of Founding members such as Christopher Fettes were enthusiastic about Esperanto.
Sadhbh O’Neill who famously was elected to Dublin City Council in 1991 despite not having campaigned (She was in the US at the time).
Oddly enough, that victory is attributed as part of why the Greens did not do particularly well (or as well as they thought they would) in the 1992 General Election, as some candidates/branches felt that the vote would turn out, canvass or no canvass.
The 6 Billion would have refered to money Albert promised we’d get from Europe.

Nuala Ahern – Green Party – 1994 European Elections December 30, 2009
It was a shock in 1994 when the Greens won 2 seats in the European Parliament Elections in Ireland. Patricia McKenna was seen as having a decent chance and subsequently shocked by topping the poll, however Nuala Aherns win was unexpected in many circles.
Ahern served two terms in the European Parliament having initially been elected to Wicklow Co Council for Greystones in 1991. Her Father Vincent McDowell was elected a Green councillor for Dun Laoghaire and stood in a number of General elections for the Greens (he also over the years stood for Labour and as an Independent).
Notice on the second scan the unusual Green Party Logo.
Donogh MacCarthy Morrogh (Mr Mac) – Green Party -Cork North Central 1992 December 17, 2009
Donogh MacCarthy Morrogh (Mr Mac) from the 1992 General election where he polled 818 votes. He was the Gardener on Cork Multichannel, how big a role that was I don’t know.
Given the current prominence of ‘Green Jobs’ here we have them being promoted in 1992 by Donogh MacCarthy Morrogh. Amongst the proposals were recycling and insulation, the Green jobs still being touted today.
I don’t know if the Beautiful City – Garden Festival ever took place.
Tom Simpson -Green Party -2002 Dublin Central December 15, 2009
I think this is from 2002 Dublin Central (A Tom Simpson also stood in Dublin North West for the Greens in 1997). Tom Simpson, a founder member of the Green Party and also an active Trade Unionist.
Regarding the Fianna Fail government of the time…
‘They still want to poison our air with incinerators’ ………

Betty Reeves, Michael Dunphy -Green Party- Blackrock 1991 LE December 12, 2009
In the 1991 local elections in the Blackrock Ward, the late Betty Reeves was elected to the council having polled 491 First preferences, well short of the 1,623 quota. She served one term. As written on the leaflet she was a founder member of the Green Party. Her niece is married to John Gormley. I think the Newtown Park/ Carysfort bus committee was to do with the lack of service and the state of the buses used, on the 6 and 6A routes.
In 1991 Greens were still thought of as outside the mainstream, yet here we had a candidate Michael Dunphy who ran his own business, was an active member of the GAA and so on.
Amongst the issues covered are ‘The Owen Rua proposals for a huge infill and a 630 unit luxury housing estate out in the bay” and opposition to ‘Dalkey gun club’….

Marcus McCabe -Green Party – Cavan-Monaghan 2002 GE December 5, 2009
Marcus McCabe (who kindly sent me this) stood in the 2002 General Election in Cavan-Monaghan for the Green Party. It was the first time the Green Party stood there. He polled 1,100 votes, 843 votes behind Monaghan based Independent councillor Vincent Martin (a former president of the Students Union in Maynooth) who subsequently joined the Greens and stood in 2007.
Leaflet from Patricia McKenna -Green Party- 1994 European Elections- Dublin November 30, 2009
Some material from Patricia McKenna of the Green Party from the 1994 European Election campaign. She topped the poll and was elected.
The Waterboys/Green Alliance benefit concert Oct 1987 November 26, 2009
Its 1987 and the Waterboys do a benefit concert for the Green Alliance with the proceeds ‘going to finance a Green Road Show which will tour the country..’
The concert itself was in the Olympic Ballroom, a few of the songs from the forthcoming Fishermans Blues were played. I think The Sawdoctors may have been the support.(I’m informed the Benzini Brothers were the support)
A Windscale Fire 30th Anniversary Demo, organised by CND, outside the British Embassy is also advertised.
Not too often Chief Seattle gets quoted in Irish political material either…
Probably a misprint too in “We Greens have a saying ‘THINK GLOBALLY, ACT GLOBALLY’“…. should surely read ‘THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY”
Ciaran Cuffe -1997 Dublin Central November 16, 2009
1997 and SouthEast Inner City Green Councillor Ciaran Cuffe is running in Dublin Central looking ‘To clean up this dirty old town’.
(you may need to click on some of the images to read them)

Tony Ryan _Green Alliance- 1983 Dublin Central By-Election November 15, 2009
This was published in part here previously, but given its amongst the oldest Green material I have, I figured it was worth a post of its own.
A few things here such as the TDs annual salary being £16,400. The honeycomb graphic with all the interconnecting Green ideas. To ‘Outlaw Land Speculation’ was suggested here and its an awful pity that never happened.
Ryan got 458 votes.

Dan Boyle -Green Party-Letter to constituents 1992 November 13, 2009
From the 1992 General Election Campaign, A letter from Green candidate Dan Boyle to constituents.
Letter notes how the Green Party are different from the other politicians. ‘ A Plague on all their houses’ indeed…….
Trevor Sargent -Green Party -Dublin North -2002 General Election November 10, 2009
First elected in 1992, the then Green Party Leader Trevor Sargents almost apocalyptic letter to Dublin North voters in 2002. Despite the Earth being on its last legs the inside part is positive and paints an excellent picture of Sargent. Not too many leaflets have planes, trains, boats and buses in with a picture of a red squirrel. The leaflet also illustrates the diversity of the constituency from farming to fishing, recyling to Aer Lingus and transport issues also.
The Greens have a fondness for quotes from the papers and this is no different with quotes from teh Sunday World and Foinnse amongst others.
Sargent had been the Green Partys first ever Leader for less than a year.

Phil Kearney -Green- 1985 LE Ballybrack November 4, 2009
This is from the 1985 Local election, Ballybrack ward. Apologies that the scan is so poor. I’ll try and redo it in due course.
Looking back a quarter of a century on, a number of things stand out, amongst them,
‘Stop and Reverse the Growth of Dublin’
A sign of the times too that Acid Rain was seen as the big threat as Global Warming wasn’t known about.
‘Energy Efficient homes- major insulation scheme needed to stop hypothermia, ‘
‘An end to Land Rezoning / Speculation scandal. Tax unused property.’
‘Double Jobbing- Councillors should not also be T.Ds or Euro M.P.s’.
Sellafield still known as Windscale.
Also the reference to Bishopscourt peace camp, which was a camp beside bishopscourt radar base in Co Down that ran from 1983 to 1986.
Theres a pamphlet from Bishopscourt here
Paul Gogarty -Green Party- 1992 Dublin West October 25, 2009
Paul Gogarty in 1992. Nice little history of the Greens in Dublin West as well as some catchy slogans…”Other Parties try to steal our clothes but they dont fit” .
Nothing about Deputy Stagg in this either….
John Goodwillie -Green Party- Dublin SC 1997 October 4, 2009
John Goodwillie’s 1997 manifesto from Dublin South Central. Author of many articles in papers and periodicals over the years also.

Patricia McKenna 1992-Dublin Central October 2, 2009
Patricia McKenna in what I think was her first electoral outing. She was Roger Garlands Dail Adviser and co-secretary of the European Greens.
As an Artist I presume she did the wonderful cartoon herself.
Green Party Membership Form 1989 September 23, 2009
I got this in September 1989. Mentions Roger Garlands recent election to the Dail. Its also far more left wing and idealistic than todays Green Policies. No mention of Global Warming as it wasn’t known about then (or at least by most people).
Roger Garland- Ireland’s First Green TD -1992 Dublin South September 18, 2009
Roger Garland made History when he became Ireland first ever Green TD in the 1989 General Election. He was elected in Dublin South. He lost his seat however in 1992. His first preference vote went from 4771 in 1989 to 2258 in 1992.
