From February 1982 ‘Getting Down to the job’ and ‘Fianna Fails fair, realistic budget’

Tags: , , ,

From the February 1982 General Election (caused by the Budget being defeated due to increased VAT on Children’s shoes), two ads from Fianna Fail focusing on their own budget proposals. Note the proposed abolition of VAT on Clothes and Shoes. Interesting too that they would “restore the grant and mortgage subsidy to single people”. Also interesting how they proposed paying for their various measures….  These benefits will be financed by various measures which affect companies and financial institutions.”

1954 General Election flyer for Joseph Pilkington -Independent Republican Labour Candidate, Workers Unemployed, Small Farmer and Old IRA -Sligo Leitrim

From the 1954 General Election in Sligo/Leitrim a flyer for Joseph Pilkington an Independent Republican Labour Candidate, Workers Unemployed, Small Farmer and Old IRA candidate. He polled 2,710 votes and failed to win a seat.
As far as I know Pilkington was a Sligo Town based Councillor. He was elected to Sligo County Council and Sligo Corporation in 1950 as a Labour candidate and died in 1955. I don’t know why he didn’t stand for Labour here in 1954.
Many thanks to the sender.

Some Anti Coalition Fianna Fail ads from the 1989 General Election which are of particular interest as Fianna Fail went into coalition with The Progressive Democrats after that election. It was of course to be a “Temporary Little Arrangement” but it didn’t work out that way.

From a 1992 Progressive Democrat leaflet Dessie O’Malley outlines the position of the party regarding the 3 Abortion Referenda to be held on the same day as the General Election. Whilst they asked for a YEs vote for the Right to Travel and Right to Information, they asked for a NO vote on the Abortion issue. Many of the reasons for voting against the Referendum outlined by O’Malley are just as relevant today as they were then.

The Spring/Summer 2013 edition of the Fianna Fail Members magazine ‘Cuisle’. (All editions to date are here) There’s quite a bit of interest in it, including an article by Cllr Cathal Crowe on his collection of old political memorabilia. The cover of the magazine caused some controversy and was a topic on Joe Duffys Liveline.
