“Group Fixtures & Venues 2002 World Cup Korea Japan” -Brendan Brady -Fine Gael- 2002 General Election Dublin North West May 30, 2011


Candidates or TDs will often send a card with useful phone numbers (sometimes with a magnet so it can be stuck on the fridge), a guide to local services, Budget guides, guides to Benefits and so on all in the hope that you will hold on to them.
World Cups and other sporting occasions also lead to a flurry of leaflets with fixture guides and the like. This one is a fixture guide for the 2002 World Cup produced by Fine Gael Dublin North west candidate Brendan Brady. The 2002 General Election was held on the 17th of May and Brady polled 2,082 votes and missed out on a seat.

“Averil called ……” – Averil Power -Fianna Fail 2009 Local Elections Howth Malahide


“Averil called ……” a Sorry I missed you card from Averil Power from the 2009 Local Elections. Fianna Fail candidate Power was running in the Howth Malahide ward where she polled 1,659 votes but failed to win a seat.

Leaflet from Deirdre O’Donoghue- Progressive Democrats -Dundalk UDC North Ward 1994 Local Elections May 27, 2011


From the 1994 Local Elections (for Town Councils and UDCs) a leaflet from Progressive Democrat candidate Deirdre O’Donoghue who was running for a seat on Dundalk UDC in the North Ward. The then Dundalk Democrat Journalist polled 105 votes and failed to win a seat.

From the 1997 General Election a flyer from Michael McDowell of the Progressive Democrats running in Dublin South East. In the leaflet he attacks the “The Tax and Spend Rainbow?” the rainbow being The Rainbow Coalition of Fine Gael, Labour and Democratic Left. He also mentions a 4 and a half party patchwork Rainbow that would have included The Greens and Independents.

“Put the right man back!”- Garret Fitzgerald led Fine Gael -November 1982 General Election May 19, 2011


From the November 1982 General Election. The generic Fine Gael leaflet. Pictured is the leader Garret Fitzgerald with the slogan “Put the right man back!”. There is a profile of Garret, however  Garret does not have a personal message to the electorate, just a series of points with his picture above them which is highly unusual.

Leaflet from Garret Fitzgerald, Joe Doyle, Willie Egan -Fine Gael- Dublin South East- 1987 General Election


From the 1987 General Election a leaflet from outgoing Taoiseach , the late Garret Fitzgerald, the late Joe Doyle and Willie Egan running for Fine Gael in Dublin South East.
After five years in government, the Slogan for the election was “We’ve done the Groundwork -Now Let’s Build the Nation”.
Fitzgerald topped the poll but was unable to bring in either of his running mates as Joe Doyle lost his seat.

From the 2011 General Election a leaflet from Labour Party candidate in Carlow Kilkenny Anne Phelan. The leaflet has the headline “Ireland Needs To Get Back To Work” and has details of Labours proposed Jobs fund.
The Graiguenamanagh based Phelan polled 8,072 votes and was elected.

From the 1985 Local Elections a sample Ballot paper issued by Independent Fianna Fail for Letterkenny UDC. The candidates were Tadhg Culbert, James Larkin, Hugh Dorrian and Jim Lynch. (A leaflet from them with details of the candidates is posted here)
Of the other Non Party candidates Patrick J Blake, Charles Grant and Sean Maloney ran for The Community Party, whilst James Devenney ran for the Donegal Progressive Party which attracted a Protestant vote.

The leaflet mentions amongst other things the Joint Labour Committees, workers resistance in Waterford Glass and Thomas Cook. They also describe themselves as “.. one of the most active and determined elements of the new United Left Alliance”

From the 2011 General Election a flyer for Labour Party candidate in Waterford Ciara Conway. Dungarvan based Conway ran with Seamus Ryan on the Labour Party ticket and was duly elected. Previous Labour TD Brian O’Shea retired prior to the election.
