“Students and Sinn Fein” a leaflet issued by the Sinn Fein Youth Department explaining Sinn Feins policies, their support for the IRA and issues that impact students. It also has a cartoon of a ‘Quite short history of Ireland’ on the front.

Fascinating piece of history this , the October 21st 1921 issue of “An t-Ógláċ The Official Organ of the Irish Volunteers”. There are articles about Revolvers, the importance of ‘cover’, Night Training and ‘The Indian Situation’.

From 1974 a Sinn Fein Manual of Publicity. It was an internal publication “..prepared solely for the information and guidance of Sinn Fein Members. It is not for public sale or distribution.”
It is fairly detailed and covers all areas of publicity from songs and poems, stickers, leaflets to cultivating contacts with the press and so on. An interesting read. I presume other parties produced such material also.

From 1981 a small pamphlet produced by Sinn Fein’s Department of Women’s Affairs entitled “Abortion Ireland”. At the time the holding of an Abortion Referendum was a big issue and led to the first of our Abortion Referendums in 1983.
“In this brief report we have tried to present as many facts as possible on the circumstances behind abortion as an option for women and those who campaign against abortion”

From the 1955 Westminster Elections a single page manifesto from Sinn Fein. Sinn Fein stood 12 candidates of which two, Tom Mitchell and Philip Clarke were elected.

Two wonderful leaflets for Eamon De Valera from the 1917 East Clare by election. One “A Message to the electors of East Clare from the people of Limerick” and the other “Dr O’Dwyer at Limerick 14th Sept., 1916”. De Valera defeated Patrick Lynch to win the seat. (telegram sent by De Valera to his wife with the result)

From the November 1982 General Election a Leaflet for Dan Kiely, Denis Foley and Tom McEllistrim who were running for Fianna Fail in Kerry North. Foley and McEllistrim were elected.
Interesting to note Dan Kielys mention of the Pro Life Amendment.

Leaflet for John Cushnahan-Fine Gael -1989 European Elections -Munster July 26, 2012
From the 1989 European Elections a leaflet from former leader of The Alliance Party and prominent Civil Rights movement figure John Cushnahan running for Fine Gael in Munster. Cushnahan polled 43,326 votes and was elected. He was returned again in 1994 and 1999.

Leaflet from Dan Foley -Labour – 1937 General Election Waterford July 14, 2012
From the 1937 General Election a leaflet from Labour Party candidate in Waterford Dan Foley. Foley,who was President of the Waterford Workers Council, polled 3,179 votes and missed out on a seat.
The issues addressed in the leaflet give an idea of the problems of the time.

From the 1943 General Election in Louth a leaflet for Ailtirí na hAiséirghe candidate Eoin O’Coigligh. A Councillor originally elected for Labour, he polled 585 votes.
I’ve more Ailtirí na hAiséirghe material posted which have details of policy etc.

From 1977 leaflet for Denis Foley, Kit Ahern and Tom McEllistrim -Fianna Fail – Kerry North July 5, 2012
From the 1977 General Election a leaflet for Denis Foley, Kit Ahern and Tom McEllistrim running for Fianna Fail in Kerry North. McEllistrim and Ahern were both elected.
The leaflet also gives some details of that famous 1977 Fianna Fail manifesto such as the “Abolition of Rates..” and unusually “For housewives -weekly information on prices on Radio, Television and newspapers”
Kita Ahern despite her long political career only had the one term in the Dail , she was the Aunt of Eoin’Bomber’ Liston and later joined the Progressive Democrats.
Tom McEllistrim succeeded his father (who had held a Dail seat in Kerry since 1923) in 1969 and held the ‘family’ seat until 1987. He regained it in 1989 before losing it again in 1992. His son also Tom McEllistrim served as a TD for Kerry North from 2002 to 2011.
Denis Foley was elected to teh Dail in 1981 and held the seat until 1989 but regained it in 1992 before retiring in 2002.

From the 1969 General Election, the ITGWU advertise the Labour candidates standing in the election that were members of the union. There were 32 ITGWU members listed , amongst them Conor Cruise O’Brien, David Thornley, Dan Spring and Brendan Corish.
