Nicky Kelly -Independent -Wicklow 1997 December 11, 2009

Growing up it was common to see ‘Free Nicky Kelly’ graffiti around the place. In 1978  Kelly, a then IRSP member was wrongly convicted along with Osgur Breatnach and Brian McNally of The 1976 Sallins Train Robbery. After a campaign for his release, he was release on “humanitarian grounds’ in 1984 and was pardoned in 1992.
Here having been elected to Arklow UDC in 1994 (topping the poll), Kelly stood in the 1995 Wicklow by-election. These leaflets are from the 1997 General Election, where he polled almost 5000 votes but failed to get in.

Brendan Ryan – “A Voice for the Voiceless” NUI Seanad 1989 December 6, 2009

Brendan Ryan, former Independent Senator and former Labour Party Senator (as well as European and General Election candidate) in 1989.
In 1989 we faced similar challenges than those we face at the minute. This leaflet from Ryan is especially interesting as Ryan challenged the economic consensus of the time.
He finsihes with the lines….
“The cruel values of selfish competition, greed, individualism and indifference, which currently dominate our country are resisted. Our country must be drawn together and this can only be done if the cult of greed and selfishness is resisted.”

A leaflet and a letter from Independent Community Candidate Joe Lalor for the 1985 Greystones Town Commission elections. Lalor later stood for the PDs.
Amongst the items mentioned are the coming of ‘Advanced Micro Devices’ who were to provide a projected 1000 jobs. That never happened, I dont know why.
By 2011 A.D. (sounded a rather long time in the future) the Greystones / Delgany district had a projected population of 42,500. I think its around 30,000 at the minute.

Alice Glenn Report – 1987 GE

The now Independent TD, Alice Glenn explains why she left Fine Gael or how Fine Gael left her. Today Alices views look a bit extreme , however in 1987  Alices views were mainstream enough. The Other Alice Glenn report I have from around the 1986 Divorce Referendum was published by a group called ‘Family Forum’, although not mentioned here the PO box address is the same as Alices here.

Alice Glenn was first elected to the Dail in 1981 before losing her seat in the Feb 82 election. She regained her seat in the November 1982 election and served until 1987 where running as an independent she lost her seat.

Martin Hogan -‘Pro Life Man’-1992 Longford-Roscommon November 11, 2009

The 1992 General election was held on the same day as the Abortion Referenda on The Right to Life, The right to travel and The right to information.
A lot of pro life candidates stood as for the first time Fianna Fail were seen by many as no longer 100% Anti Abortion.
It was the aftermath of the ‘X Case’ and later this Referendum that led to the formation of the likes of the Christian Principles Party, The National Party,
The Christian Solidarity Party, The Christian Centreist Party and Muintir Na hEireann.
Martin Hogan Polled just 459 votes.
