Tomas O’Conaill, Liam Coveney, Billy Murphy -Labour -Youghal UDC 1985 January 26, 2010

Not exactly the best quality leaflet, which wasn’t helped by the fact that I ‘rescued’ it from a ditch on the way to some haunted ruins on the banks of the Blackwater! I’m pretty sure its from the 1985 although I cant be certain. Tomas O’Conaill was running for Cork County Council where he polled 584 votes and failed to win a seat. He also ran for Youghal UDC whilst Liam Coveney and Billy Murphy were just running for the UDC. I’ve no idea who got in.
From a Brief search I see that Liam Coveney was still involved with the RNLI s Youghal Lifeboat.

Donogh MacCarthy Morrogh (Mr Mac) from the 1992 General election where he polled 818 votes. He was the Gardener on Cork Multichannel, how big a role that was I don’t know.
Given the current prominence of ‘Green Jobs’ here we have them being promoted in 1992 by Donogh MacCarthy Morrogh. Amongst the proposals were recycling and insulation, the Green jobs still being touted today.
I don’t know if the Beautiful City – Garden Festival ever took place.

Brendan Ryan – “A Voice for the Voiceless” NUI Seanad 1989 December 6, 2009

Brendan Ryan, former Independent Senator and former Labour Party Senator (as well as European and General Election candidate) in 1989.
In 1989 we faced similar challenges than those we face at the minute. This leaflet from Ryan is especially interesting as Ryan challenged the economic consensus of the time.
He finsihes with the lines….
“The cruel values of selfish competition, greed, individualism and indifference, which currently dominate our country are resisted. Our country must be drawn together and this can only be done if the cult of greed and selfishness is resisted.”
