Madeleine Taylor-Quinn from the 2002 Seanad election. She had firs been elected to the Dail in 1981, lost her seat in Feb 1982
before regaining it in the November 82 election. She Lost her seat in 1992 and has failed to regain it since.
She has also stood in European elections for Fine Gael.
One little thing here…She notes that she ‘Fully resigned teaching post when first elected…’
From the 1987 General election in Dublin South West. He mentions an awful lot that came to pass, such the the Hospital, Luas, Town Centre and so on. He polled 5,086 votes and failed to win a seat. He was elected in 1989 though.
The leaflet itself is fading so had to play around with it to make it readable.
Fiona O’Malley, daughter of Dessie O’Malley, from her 2002 election campaign in Dun Laoghaire where she won a seat.
She lost it in the 2007 General Election. She now serves in the Seanad having been nominated by the Taoiseach. Fiona has two websites listed www.voteno1.com and www.no1vote.com, I wonder was one a misprint?
Mary Banotti, Grand Niece of Michael Collins, MEP for four terms and the Fine Gael candidate in the 1999 Presidential election.
Richie Ryan, elected to the Dail in 1959, probably most famous for his time as Minister for Finance in the 1973 to 1977 Fine Gael/Labour coalition. He was satirised as ‘Richie Ruin’ by ‘Halls Pictorial Weekly’. He served in the European Parliament from 1973 until 1986 when he was appointed to the European Court of Auditors. He was replaced as MEP by Chris O’Malley.
Note how Fine Gael are pushing the fact that they are part of the Christian Democrats in the European Parliament.
Ernie Beggs running for Fianna Fail in 1991 local elections, his running mates were Tony Kett and Tom Stafford. Both Stafford and Kett were elected, Beggs got 593 votes.
An interesting title he had too ‘Fianna Fail Trade Union Co-Ordinator’.
Ernie Beggs later ran as an Independent… so must have fallen out with ‘Dublin Central Fianna Fail’…

1987 Cork South Central Independent Candidate, the Late Charlie Hennessy (Charles Hennessy). Plenty of his proposals would be more than applicable now.
Hennessys obituary in the Examiner gives an idea of how well respected and thought of he was. He polled 1,585 votes.

The now Independent TD, Alice Glenn explains why she left Fine Gael or how Fine Gael left her. Today Alices views look a bit extreme , however in 1987 Alices views were mainstream enough. The Other Alice Glenn report I have from around the 1986 Divorce Referendum was published by a group called ‘Family Forum’, although not mentioned here the PO box address is the same as Alices here.
Alice Glenn was first elected to the Dail in 1981 before losing her seat in the Feb 82 election. She regained her seat in the November 1982 election and served until 1987 where running as an independent she lost her seat.
Joan Collins, running as an independent in the 2004 Local elections where she was elected. In 2009 she increased her vote and was elected comfortably running for the People Before Profit Alliance. She has an outside chance of a seat in the next election…
Betty (Elizabeth in some records) Coffey stood in both the 1989 and 1992 General Elections for Fianna Fail in Dub Laoghaire. In this 1989 election she was just 26 votes behind party colleague Brian Hillery when she ws eliminated, Hillery was elected. Although not so much here, a lot of her other literature promoted her ‘Liberal Agenda’.

Eddie Collins-Hughes from the 2002 General election in Carlow-Kilkenny. Eddie was looking for a fairer society. He polled 1,614 votes.
Sirena Campbell from the Meath by-election 2005 caused by John Brutons appointment as EU Ambassador to the United States. Sirena Campbell, along with the late Kate Walsh in Kildare North (where a by-election was held on the same day to replace Charlie McCreevey who had moved to the EU Commission) were the last Progressive Democrat candidates fielded in by-elections.
Sirena Campbell, having failed in her attempt in the 2004 locals in Slane, polled 2,679 in the by-election. She got just 957 votes in the 2007 GE , however she was elected to Meath Co Council in 2009 when standing for Fine Gael.
A Letter from Bobby Molloy to voters from the 1989 European election campaign. He polled well but failed to win a seat finishing 5th.
Molloy First elected to the Dail in 1965, was one of the first Fianna Fail Politicians to join the newly formed Progessive Democrats in 1986. He retired from politics prior to the 2002 General Election in a controversy over representations made in a rape case.

This is a recruitment leaflet from the Socialist Labour Party circa 1980.
The Socialist Labour Party was short-lived, having been co-founded in 1977 by Noel Browne and Matt Merrigan (who both had been thrown out of the Labour Party). It finally disbanded just five years later in 1982.
It fought the 1979 local elections as well as the 1981 General Election.
In the 1981 election, Browne was re-elected to the Dail for Dublin North-Central. Other candidates fielded by the Socialist Labour Party included Billy Keegan and Matt Merrigan in Dublin North-West, Michael O’Donoghue in Dublin North-East and Dermot Boucher in Dún Laoghaire. None of them polled well. Matt Merrigan also stood for the SLP in the 1982 Dublin West By-Election.
