Leaflet from Eddie Fitzpatrick- Independent (Joined FF recently) -Laois Offaly 2011 GE August 15, 2011


A 2011 General Election Leaflet from then Independent Eddie Fitzpatrick who joined Fianna Fail recently. The Portarlington based, former PD councillor left the PDs after the 2007 General Election and held his council seat in 2009.
In the 2011 General Election he polled a respectable 2554 votes. He had been voting with Fianna Fail on the council prior to joining them.

Government Information Services- “10 Reasons why you should Vote Yes” to the Single European Act 1987 August 11, 2011


From the 1987 Referendum on the Single European Act an ad placed by the Government Information Services with the headline “Ten Reasons why you should Vote Yes”.
Prior to the McKenna Judgement the Government were free to take out ads such as this for various Referendum campaigns.

From 1948 “There are no Communists in Clann na Poblachta”


From the 1948 General Election Campaign an ad taken out by Clann na Poblachta to refute allegations that there were Communists in the party. Not alone that but to also to refute allegations of them trying to “..usurp .. the functions of the Catholic Church.”

From the 2009 European Elections in Dublin, a flyer from outgoing Fianna Fail MEP Eoin Ryan. Previously a Councillor, Senator and TD, Ryan was elected as an MEP in 2004.
In this 2009 Election he lost his seat.

Evelyn Cawley -Independent -Wicklow 2007 General Election August 5, 2011


From the 2007 General Election Campaign a leaflet from Evelyn Cawley an Independent running in Wicklow. Active locally, the Greystones based Cawley  was seen as an outside chance of a seat. On the day she polled  2,246 votes and finished down the field.

Ad for Kieran Doherty -H-Block -Cavan Monaghan 1981 General Election August 2, 2011


From the 1981 General Election an ad for H-Block candidate Hunger Striker Kieran Doherty who was running in Cavan Monaghan. Doherty polled 9,121 votes and was elected. Another H-Block candidate Paddy Agnew was elected in Louth.
After 73 days on Hunger Strike, Doherty died on the 2nd of August 1981.

 

From 2007 “Anti Social Behaviour -Labour Listened…. now we will act”


From the 2007 General Election a leaflet from the Pat Rabbitte led Labour Party “Anti Social Behaviour -Labour Listened…. now we will act” . On the reverse we learn of a poll taken by members of the Labour Party Nationwide on Anti Social Behaviour.

“No To EEC” – ITGWU 1972 Referendum on Entry to the EEC August 1, 2011


From the 1972 Referendum on Entry to the EEC a leaflet from the Irish Transport and General Workers Union urging a No vote in the referendum. It foresaw entry to the EEC as leading to job losses.

From the 2011 General Election an ad for Independent candidate Kate Bopp who was running in Tipperary North. On this her first electoral contest she polled 322 votes.

Tomas O Dochartaigh -Ailtirí na hAiséirghe -1944 Tipperary


From the 1944 General Election Tomas O Dochartaigh, Cathal Brughas nephew, running for -Ailtirí na hAiséirghe in Tipperary.  He polled 1,072 votes.
Ailtirí na hAiséirghe were a Fascist style party set up in Ireland in the early 40s. There is a good book on them called “Architects of The Resurrection”.

As you can see they were fairly extreme.
In this 1944 Election, the party fielded six other candidates, they were
Eoin O Coigligh – Louth 795 votes
Sean O Dubhghaill -Cork Borough 674 votes
Oisin O Droighneain -Dublin County 607 votes
Gearoid O Cuinneagain – Dublin North West 705 votes
Joseph O’Kelly – Roscommon 1217 votes
Liam Walsh (Breathnach) -Waterford 739 votes

A year earlier in the 1943 General Election the party took its first foray into Electoral Politics fielding four candidates.
Eoin O Coigligh – Louth 585 votes
Sean O Dubhghaill -Cork Borough 1,019 votes
Gearoid O Cuinneagain – Dublin North West 607 votes
Tomas O Dochartaigh – Waterford 943 votes

In 1945 the party contested the Local Elections winning 9 seats on various Local Authorities.

In the 1948 General Election it stood just one candidate.
William Hargadon in Sligo-Leitrim who polled 323 votes.
