From 1979 leaflet from Ballymun Branch of The Labour Party to Labour Councillors and Tenants of Ballymun. March 5, 2012

From circa 1979 a leaflet produced by the Ballymun Branch of The Labour Party to Labour Councillors and Tenants of Ballymun. The leaflet contains a statement by the local branch of the Labour party criticising the decision to increase heating charges in the Ballymun Estate.
The statement makes a number of points.
Tenants are supposed to have heating for nine months of the year but this is not always the case.
Tenants have no choice but to use the heating
The increase will send some tenants into rent arrears
Finally it points out that rents paid by Corporation Tenants are going to swell the profits of banks and financiers.

“The Roll of Dishonour” and “A Hot Record”- Two 1932 Election posters from Cumann na nGaedheal February 14, 2012

Two great posters from the 1932 General Election produced by Cumann na nGaedheal. (via the National Library of Ireland’s Flickr Photostream)

The first one is

“…designed to counter Fianna Fáil protests at the amount of money being paid out as military pensions to ex-members of the National Army.
In response, the text of this poster roundly condemns Fianna Fáil for causing the Irish Civil War, a conflict that cost the Saorstát “Thirty-Five Million Pounds”.
This poster is incidentally a great source for the sums involved in the Damage to Property (Compensation) Act following the Irish Civil War. Obviously not all claimants are listed here. In fact, Cumann na nGaedheal make the point that a complete list “would require a score of Posters of this size”, but some of the sums were astronomical for the time:
The Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street, Dublin: £102,905
The Freeman’s Journal, Townsend Street, Dublin: £49,390
Mitchelstown Castle, Cork: £46,475
Cork Examiner, Cork: £16,500
Bessborough House, Piltown, Kilkenny: £50,270
Condensed Milk Company, Tipperary: £59,290
Blacksod Whaling Company, Mayo: £4,950

The second one

“references popular culture in the form of records, implying that the chorus of all Fianna Fáil “songs” is the threat of war”

Other record related leaflets I’ve posted to date include this one from Alan Shatter in 2007

“Remember When There Was No Housing Problem?” -Fianna Fail 1969 General Election February 13, 2012

“Remember When There Was No Housing Problem?” ask Fianna Fail from the 1969 General Election. The amount of houses built, the speed of house building and other feats that were the hallmark of our recent construction boom are all mentioned.

“Trade Unionist Takes on RTE censorship”- Larry O’Toole related Anti Section 31 leaflet from the Free Speech Legal Fund February 8, 2012

A fascinating leaflet this from the Free Speech Legal Fund a group opposed to Section 31 of the broadcasting act.
In 1990 there was a strike at Gateaux and amongst those elected to the strike committee was Sinn Fein member Larry O’Toole. He was banned from speaking on the national airwaves in his role as a Union Official due to his membership of Sinn Fein.
The Free Speech Legal Fund was to fund a case asking the High Court for a judicial review of “RTE’s illegal extension of Section 31”

“We call on the Minister to revoke Section 31……” and other anti Section 31 posters from The Repeal Section 31 Campaign February 3, 2012

Some posters from the Repeal Section 31 Campaign.
Under Section 31 of the Broadcasting Authority Act, it was forbidden to broadcast the voice of Sinn Féin members. The Act ran from 1971 until it was lifted by the then Minister for Arts, Culture & the Gaeltacht Michael D. Higgins.
There was a similar law in the UK which was gotten around by using actors voices instead of the interviewees.
Many thanks to the sender.
