Martin Cullen Fianna Fail Minister retires

A young Martin Cullen from his first General Election in 1987. Martin Cullen had been an Independent councillor(as his father had been too) before joining the PDs.
Here in 1987 he was ‘A fighter for Waterford’ …….
Martin was, amongst other things, looking for ‘……a more Professional Dail with fewer TDs….’
He switched to Fianna Fail after the 1992 General Election.
Just got sent this. Nothing much too it only a Young Enda Kenny.
The donor dates it from the 1977 General Election where Enda Kenny topped the poll and was elected on the First Count in Mayo West.

From the 2007 General Election in Cork South Central. Fianna Fail candidate, the current Minister of Foregin Affairs Micheál Martin.
Amongst the issues shown are his role in the smoking ban as well as a host of projects in Cork that he was linked with.

Although more than likely actors, if not, you can’t help wonder did they buy that overpriced apartment on the 100% mortgage, did they have a lavish wedding? indeed were they married? have they had a baby since? how have their circumstances job wise changes in the few years since they were laughing at Bertie?
They surely wouldn’t be laughing with Bertie now.
We didn’t know that the next steps were into an economic and social nightmare….
Got sent this (Thanks to Liam Byrne) and as its a hot issue I thought I’d post it. Its has some questions and answers, details of whats available and a message to lobby your TD over the issue…
“What is a Head Shop? – Head shops are retail outlets selling psychoactive, mood-altering “legal highs” as well as drugs paraphernalia. They have a variety of quirky names that appeal to young people.”
The Roscommon Anti Head Shops group have protested outside the Dail and have a continuos picket outside the shop in Roscommon. They were featured in a documentary on Head Shops by RTE.
From the 2007 General Election in Wexford, Fianna Fail Candidate the now Senator Lisa McDonald. Her father Eddie had some success as a Wexford hurler. Its an Enniscorthy themed leaflet so many of the issues covered are local to there.
From Summer 1991 the ‘International Bulletin of Workers Party Youth’.
The Introduction notes that this was the first issue and that they were looking for a new name for the Bulletin. I don’t know the outcome of that.
There are articles on Palestine/ The Middle East. ‘The New World Order’, Nicaragua since the fall of the Sandinistas, El Salvador, EU Sanctions on the then apartheid South Africa, Cambodia and The Phillipines.
It might bring back a few memories ofthe international issues of the day.
From the 1991 Local Elections in the Buncrana LEA, Fine Gael candidates Seamus Gill , Mary McGroarty and Bernard McGuinness. Their concerns echo many of the concerns of today.
Bernard McGuinness stood in Donegal North East in 1981, 1992 and 2002 for Fine Gael but without winning a seat.
A Crime Survey from Dun Laoghaire Progressive Democrat TD, Helen Keogh in 1996.
Crime is one of the political constants, being seen to be tough on Crime or tougher than the others.
So here we have a survey asking about Crime and then asking the constituent to send it back to the TD. Needless to say I’d assume that people who had been victims of crime would be more inclined to return the survey. So hey presto the TD can say “In a survey of constituents I did 50% had been robbed…. etc etc”
It was in 1997 that Fianna Fail ran with its Zero Tolerance policy.
From the 1987 General elections in Cork East, where the Progressive Democrats ran two candidates Hugh Hall and John Guinevan. Between them they got over 10% of the vote, however it wasn’t enough to see either elected.
From the 2007 General Election in Cork East, The Labour Party Candidates Cobh based John Mulvihill and the Mallow based Sean Sherlock (son of the late Joe Sherlock).
John Mulvihill had one term as a TD from 1992 to 1997.
This time around Sean Sherlock won a seat for Labour.
From the 2007 General Election in Dublin South Central, Fine Gael candidates Catherine Byrne and Ann Marie Martin. A cleverish slogan and an endorsement from Gay Mitchell and Enda Kenny on the reverse. Catherine Byrne was elected.
From the Anarchist, Workers Solidarity Movement urging people not to vote at all in the 2002 General Election. Not very positive about politics nor big fans of Michael Noonan either!
From the 1985 local Elections in the Pembroke Ward, Independent Community Candidate Carmencita Hederman. The picture is of her going over the ‘new’ East Link bridge.
Carmencita Hederman was first elected to the council in 1974 and served until 1999. She was Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1987–88 during the Dublin Millennium celebrations. In 1989 she was elected to the Seanad for the University of Dublin Seat and served one term.
The Leaflet below gives an outline of her activities and career.
The picture on the bottom of the leaflet is of a building at the bottom of Eglington road (opposite Donnybrook Rugby ground). There was controversy when the building was built and given planning permission. This was then added to by the fact that once built the building could not find a tenant for a long period of time.
Her daughter Wendy Hederman was elected to the council for the Progressive Democrats in 2004.
From the 2007 General Election in Dublin South, Green Party Minister Eamon Ryan. It has a little profile of himself. A list of his achievements over the previous five years, which include being ‘Magill TD of the year 2007’, the creation of ‘No Logo Day’ and a Green Energy Fair in Lepardstown Racecourse.
Then on the reverse “Vote Eamon Ryan No. 1 so that in Government he can …..”
‘Provide better, more affordable housing’ , ‘Invest in faster, safer and cleaner public transport’ , ‘Support parents with young children’, ‘Deliver a proper health care system’ and ‘Develop a new Green economy’.
Another from the Alan Shatter stable of imaginative/ corny leaflets. This time from the 2007 General election campaign. The jacket slung over the shoulder and the silhouette of it in reverse on the back…..
The pink almost takes away from the serious issues he mentions.
From the 1999 local elections a flyer for Labour candidates Senator Pat Gallagher and Cllr Sean O’Brien running for Offaly County Council. On the reverse the Labour Candidates for Tullamore UDC, Pat Gallagher, Sean O’Brien,Lar Byrne, Joe Feery and Ann Starling are all shown.
Pat Gallagher resigned from politics around 2000 to take up the position of Director of Community and Enterprise with Westmeath County Council. He is now the County Manager of Offaly County Council, having previously held a similar post with Galway County Council. He had been elected to the Dail in 1992 and lost his seat in 1997. He was elected to the Senate in 1997. (His record at electionsireland.org)
The Labour result in Tullamore UDC was a massive victory for them as Labour won four of the nine seats (result at electionsireland.org). Pat Gallagher, Sean O’Brien,Lar Byrne and Joe Feery were elected with Ann Starling missing out.
Incidentally a ‘Miriam O’Callaghan’ was elected for Fianna Fail there too (although I gather no relation).
Theres nothing on the flyer indicating policy, its just photos of the candidates.
From the 1999 local elections, Fianna Fail candidate Chris Andrews running in the Pembroke Ward. Chris Andrews was elected, his running mate Liz Donnelly lost out.
He lost his seat in 2004, before being co-opted in 2006 and then winning a Dail seat in Dublin South East in 2007.
Chris Andrews is son of Niall Andrews, grandson of Todd Andrews, nephew of David Andrews and of course a cousin of amongst others Dun Laoghaire TD Barry Andrews and RTEs Ryan Tubridy.
Again for a Dublin South East based candidate the background for the photo is the Pidgeon house. Amongst the issues covered here are the needs for Taxi deregulation and more recycling and better waste management.
