Patricia McKenna -Green Party – 1999 European Elections Dublin April 23, 2010


From the 1999 European Elections in Dublin, Green Party candidate Patricia McKenna. Having suprised many by topping the poll in 1994, Patricia McKenna didn’t top the poll this time but was easily elected.
This leaflet would have been for candidates in the Local Elections held on the same day. Local candidate one side, this image on the other.
Patricia McKenna lost her seat in 2004 and stood as an Independent in the 2009 European Elections.

 

Cait Keane – Progressive Democrats – 2004 Local Elections Terenure-Rathfarnham


From the 2004 Local Elections Progressive Democrat Candidate Cait Keane running in the Terenure-Rathfarnham Ward.
Cait Keane was easily elected. Originally Elected to the Council in 1991, whe has held a seat since. She also stood in Dublin South Central on 3 occassions.
In 2009 she was elected when running for Fine Gael.

Michael McGrath -Fianna Fail – Cork South Central -2007 General Election.


From the 2007 General Election in Cork South Central, Fianna Fail candidate Michael McGrath. Despite being on the same ticket as Michael Martin, Michael McGrath was elected on the First Count.
A number of Cork issues are mentioned here including public Transport and Cork Airport.

Denis Naughten -Fine Gael -1997 General Election Longford-Roscommon April 22, 2010


From the 1997 General Election the then 24 year old Senator Denis Naughten running for Fine Gael in Longford-Roscommon. He was comfortably elected , as he has been since.
Denis Naughten is son of the Late Liam Naughten, the former Fine Gael Roscommon TD.

‘Support the Hunger Strike Demands’ Sticker – National H-Block Armagh Committee 1981


A sticker issued by The National H-Block Armagh Committee during the 1981 Hunger Strike urging people to ‘Support The Hunger Strike Demands’. These stickers, black flags, posters of the Hunger Strikers and black armbands were commonplace at the time.

These demands were
1. The right to wear their own clothes.
2. The right to refrain from compulsory do prison work, use the time for education in vocational, craft or culture fields.
3. Free association with other political prisoners
4. One letter, one parcel and one visit per week.
5. Restoration of remission of sentence lost through the protest.

“Sorry to have missed you!” – Nessa Childers -Green Party -Blackrock 2004 Local Elections Blackrock.


A Rather Lengthy and verbose ‘Sorry I missed you’ card from Nessa Childers when running for the Green Party in Blackrock in the 2004 Local Elections. Nessa Childers was elected.
She is the daughter of former president of Ireland Erskine Childers. She resigned her council seat in August 2008 citing pressure of work as a psychoanalyst as her reason.
Less than a year later she surfaced as the Labour European Parliament candidate for the East constituency. She was elected and is now a Labour MEP.

 

Pádraig de Burca ,Derek Mc Dowell -Labour Party -Clontarf 1999 Local Elections


From the 1999 Local Elections in The Clontarf ward, Labour Party candidates Pádraig de Burca and Derek Mc Dowell.
Pádraig de Burca polled 451 votes and wasn’t elected. Former TD and Junior Minister Derek McDowell polled 1205 votes and was elected.

Issues mentioned here included Public Transport, Political Standards and Housing.
In the Housing part, Labour advocated the following….
-More Serviced land at a fair price.
-A massive increase in house building.
-To bring back certificates of reasonable value to end excessive profiteering.

Paddy Lalor -Fianna Fail -1989 European Elections Leinster April 20, 2010


From the 1989 European Elections Campaign (the European Elections were held on the same day as a Genneral Election) outgoing Fianna Fail MEP Paddy Lalor. Paddy Lalor topped the poll.
A TD for over 20 years and a Minister 3 times, Paddy Lalor was also member of the last Laois team to win the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship in 1949. He Served from 1979 to 1994 in the European Parliament.

Dr John Corish -Independent -Kildare North 2007 General Election.


From the 2007 General Election in Kildare North, Independent candidate Doctor John Corish.
Amongst his polices, he was looking for a 500 Bed Teaching Hospital in Naas and a New Medical School for NUI Maynooth.
He polled 234 votes.

A lenghthy Pamphet produced by The Connolly Association in 1954 , “Father Michael O’Flanagan -Republican Priest”. Written by Desmond Greaves. It is the Story of his life with extracts from his speeches.
“The Staunchest Priest who ever lived in Ireland” wrote Count Plunkett.

‘Dublin North Transport Newsletter’ -Clare Daly -Socialist Party – 2007 General Election


From the 2007 General Election Campaign a Dublin North Transport Newsletter produced by councillor Clare Daly the Socialist Party candidate. Despite getting a creditable 4,872 votes Calre Daly wasn’t elected.
Simple things such as increasing the size of trains and of platforms, school bus services, more bus services are amongst the items mentioned.  There is of course mention of the Gridlock and the poor planning that led to having such a vast commuter belt without proper public transport services.

A letter from Dublin South West Fianna Fail TD Charlie O’Connor proclaiming that the “Children’s Hospital at Tallaght is Not Closing”. I think its from 2007. It was in relation to the proposed new National Childrens hospital.

Eastern By-pass ‘The Road To Nowhere’ -Joe Costello 1999 leaflet against ‘The Port Tunnel’ April 17, 2010


From 1999 a leaflet from the then Senator Joe Costello and the Dublin Central Labour Party concerning the proposed  Eastern by-pass/Port Relief road. What later became known as The Port Tunnel.
It also mentions the possibility of building a motorway over Sandymount Strand to link with the M50 near Dun Laoghaire.
In hindsight were his concerns justified.
