Claire Wheeler -Green Party -1991 Local Elections -Pembroke April 13, 2010


From the 1991 Local Elections, Green Party candidate Claire Wheeler running in the Pembroke Ward. Claire Wheeler polled 1,060 votes and was elected.
She was joined on Dublin City Council by Green Councillors, John Gormley, Ciaran Cuffe and Siadbh O’Neill.

Manchester Connolly Association- 1965 Poster for Easter Commemoration Meeting and Parade


From 1965 a Poster from The Manchester Connolly Association advertising an Easter Commemoration, Meeting and Parade.
The Connolly Association, were the Irish Communist grouping in Britain. Originally called The Connolly Club.
This article on Manchester’s Radical History provides good background. Both Danny Kilcommins and Tommy Watters , speakers at the event are mentioned.
I’m not sure if the Tom Redmond mentioned is the Tom Redmond who was a member of the Irish Workers League and editor of Socialist Voice.

 

Jimmy Somers -Labour Party -1983 Dublin Central By Election April 12, 2010


From the 1983 Dublin Central By-Election, Labour candidate Jimmy Somers. The by-election was caused by the death of Fianna Fail TD George Colley. It was a tough time for Labour who were starting a decline, they won just two of the 52 Dublin City Council seats in the 1985 Local Elections.
Jimmy Somers finished fifth behind the Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Workers Party and Sinn Fein Candidates. Fianna Fails Tom Leonard was elected.
Amongst the items mentioned is Labours commitment for a Divorce Referendum, Drugs and Crime.
Jimmy Somers is a former President of SIPTU and was previously in the ITGWU. He was also a local to the area.

From the 2009 Local Elections a letter from councillor Clare Daly urging voters to vote for The Socialist Party candidate Terry Kelleher in Balbriggan. She also asks voters to vote for Joe Higgins in the European Elections.
Terry Kellher was elected to Balbriggan Town Council.

Michael Healy-Rae -Independent Fianna Fail -2009 Local Elections Killorglin April 9, 2010


From the 2009 Local Elections in Kerry. Poll topper in Killorglin LEA, Michael Healy-Rae, son of the sitting TD Jackie Healy-Rae.
‘I earnestly ask for your NO 1 VOTE Please -or you next highest preference’ writes Michael.
The thing that also strikes me about the leaflet is that when reading it I can hear Michael Healy-Raes voice saying most of the text.
I also see that Michael is a member of the HSE.

Jane Dillion Byrne, Eric Doyle, Jack Loughran, Philip Murphy -Labour Party -1985 Local elections Dun Laoghaire


From the 1985 Local Elections in the Dun Laoghaire LEA. Labour Party candidates Jane Dillion Byrne, Eric Doyle, Jack Loughran and Philip Murphy. I think only Jane Dillion Byrne (who taught me to swim many many moons ago) was elected.
Lots here too in the profiles of the candidates showing the local issues of the time and some reminders of times past.
Jane Dillion Byrne was a founder member of Amnesty International in ireland.
Eric Doyle was educated at the long closed CBS Eblana Avenue (Ronnie Drew was another past pupil).
Jack Loughran had fought for Dun Laoghaire harbour to be under democratic control and developed for all.
Philip Murphy campaigned against payment of compensation by Local Authorities to disappointed developers.

Liz O’Donnell -Progressive Democrats – Dublin South 2007 April 8, 2010


From the 2007 General Election campaign in Dublin South, a rather airbrushed Progressive Democrat candidate Liz O’Donnell.
Liz O’Donnell was first elected to Dublin City Council in 1991 for Rathmines. Liz O’Donnell had been active in Mary Robinson’s 1990 Presidential campaign. In his book Ruairi Quinn claimed that she had contacted him wanting to help the Labour campaign of Mary Freehill, then she appeared as the Progressive Democrat candidate for Rathmines (where she outpolled Freehill).
In 1992 Liz O’Donnell stood in Dublin South and was elected. She was returned each time until this 2007 General Election where she lost her seat.

It is sparse enough in detail, but still indicates how the Dail has changed in the last 25 years.

Things like being Televised, Private Members Bills, The Oireachtas Committee system being established and so on.

 

Jim O’Callaghan -Fianna Fail -2004 LE Rathmines.


From May 2004 a Newsletter produced by Fianna Fail candidate in the Rathmines Ward Jim O’Callaghan. Jim O’Callaghan, brother of RTEs Miriam O’Callaghan, failed to win a seat, he also missed out in the 2007 General Election. He did however win a seat in the 2009 Local election when amongs the competition was Garrett Tubridy, brother of RTEs Ryan Tubridy.
The Leaflet itself contains local issues and also a detailed profile of the candidate and his family.
Also a small bit urging a number 2 vote for party colleague Michael Donnelly and also to vote for Eoin Ryan in the European Elections.

Stephen Price -Independent -1992 GE Westmeath April 7, 2010


From the 1992 General Election in Westmeath, Independent candidate Stephen Price.
An Abortion Referendum (Right to Travel , information etc) was held on the same day which led to quite a number of pro-life Independent candidates.
This in part due to Fianna Fail , which had been previously seen as Pro-Life falling out of step with SPUC and others. This in turn led to the setting up of
a number of Parties such as The Christian Principles Party, Christian Solidarity Party and The National Party.
Stephen Price polled 747 votes.

Jeff Ahere also ran in the 2007 General Election in Kildare North polling 983 votes.

Tony McDermott -Green Party -2004 LE Terenure /Rathfarnham


From the 2004 Local Elections Green Party Candidate Tony McDermott who was elected in the Terenure Rathfarnham ward.
Tony McDermott also ran in the 2007 General Election in Dublin South Central polling well but not enough to win a seat.
He failed to hold his Council seat in 2009.

was one of a number of ‘New Irish’ candidates running in the 2009 Local Elections. He polled a respectable 611 votes.
Idowu Olafimihan runs a security company, Empire Security Services.
