“A News Brief from Beverley” -Beverley Flynn Summer 2008 Newsletter January 5, 2011

From Summer 2008 “A News Brief from Beverley”. The message on the front from Beverley is about Cancer Services in Mayo and her backing of the National Cancer Strategy.
One item was her support for the Construction sector. “The current market presents an opportunity ..for Local Authorities.. to negotiate deals to buy affordable houses..
She would have had The State (County Councils) buy a raft of houses in 2008…. that would look well now.

Michael Enright , Catherine Murphy -The Workers Party -1989 European Elections Leinster

From the 1989 European Elections a leaflet from the Workers Party candidates Wexford Councillor Michael Enright and Kildare based Town Councillor Catherine Murphy.
In the “Action Plan For Leinster” Forestry, Peatlands , ‘Reorganisation of agricultural production’ and the massive mineral resources at Navan are amongst the items mentioned.
The inside of the leaflet is almost totally EC focused.
There were high hopes that both Michael Enright and Catherine Murphy could put down a marker for future Dail progress. A General election was held on the same day and it was hoped that their candidacy in the Euro Elections would give them a boost.
Although the Workers Party vote increased from 1984s Euro Election, both candidates lost their deposits with a combined 4.38% of the vote.
In the General election Enrights vote actually fell, whilst Murphys 1,520 vote was decent enough in the circumstances (An ‘Army Wives’ candidate, Carol Tiernan also stood in Kildare polling 2,690 votes, some of which would have gone to Murphy).

A Card from Willie O’Dea, Minister for Defence, with details of his various clinics. The Fianna Fail TD for Limerick East has a lot of clinics.
I also thought that in light of his unexpected sacking as a Minister he must have been stuck with a pile of these cards reminding him and voters of his demotion.

It was illustrated at both the National and The local level. It gives an idea of where we were at in 1997 and how in hindsight it was an awful pity that the Rainbow government was not returned.

The Ad begins with the words..

This is one of the most important elections in the history of the State. It comes when the future of the North is in the balance, when crucial decisions are being taken in the EEC and when the institutions of the State are being attacked by the forces of subversion and Anarchy….
