Prior to the 1984 European Elections Fianna Fail had a number of Seminars for members on forthcoming European Elections. I’ve included the details of the seminar and some pages from the accompanying booklet. Included are messages from Charles Haughey, Gerry Collins and various details about Fianna Fail rules and the European Parliament.
“The Psalm of Haughey” , kindly sent to me recently. No idea what publication it comes from, I assume its from the late 1970’s.
Many thanks to the sender

From ‘This Week’ magazine April 1970 a profile of a pre Arms trial Charles Haughey. In an almost ‘Hello’ type interview and profile that feautures his family, his horses and much more. The question of the sale of house and lands in Raheny to builders is glossed over. Still worth a read.

From the February 1982 General Election a leaflet from Fianna Fail in Dun Laoghaire. ‘Voters of Dun Laoghaire. For Your Future’ Vote Andrews, O’Donoghue, O Méalóid.
David Andrews and Martin O’Donoghue both held their seats, Clare O Méalóid polled 945 votes and failed to get in.
Episode 2 of the documentary series made by Charles Haughey in the Late 80s. I’ve no idea if it was ever broadcast and other than his own ego why it was made.
Found this on Youtube a documentary series on Ireland presented by Charles Haughey.
Not sure why or when it was made.
From 1989 a leaflet distributed by the Sean Lemass Cumann in Maynooth entitled ‘Some Notes on Ireland’s Premier Political Party‘
We get a little history of Fianna Fail as well as party Philosophies and attacks on both Labour and Fine Gael. The leaflet is also very much of its time in that it harks back to Fianna Fail basics, or what were Fianna Fail basics.
“The electoral record of the pasty reflects it’s success in forming policies on national and constitutional issues that appeal to all sections of the Irish people. Fianna Fail has made a unique and historic contribution to the building up of our state and the welfare of its people. Its achievements have been the result of progressive policies formilated by a caring listening leadership in tune with a true cross section of our people. ”
“That Fianna Fail is to the Left of Fine Gael may be seen in the party’s commitment to the problems of the small man….”
“The Labour party’s commitment to nationalisation in pursuit of a Social Workers’ Republic goes much further than is acceptable to the Fianna Fail view of the importance of individual rights and freedoms in society. Labour has also opposed Fianna Fail policy on free trade and Irish entry to the E.E.C.
In the field of economic and social development, the most significant advances of Fianna Fail in Government in recent years were the provision of free post-primary education for all, membership of the European Economic Community and the European Monetary System.”
From the 1981 General Election a leaflet fro Fianna Fail candidates Sean Doherty and Terry Leyden.
At the start of a decade where emigration was rife Haughey writes…
• That the best possible Educational. Recreational and Employment Opportunities will he provided for our young people.
Hitting out at Liberal Ireland he writes…
That the traditional values and standards of our society, which are under threat. will be defended and preserved.
and that
Fianna Fail is the only party that can be trusted to cherish and safeguard the traditional values and ideals of the Irish people

The generic Fianna Fail 1987 leaflet which would have had candidate details inside. The Message from Charles Haughey to the electorate is interesting.
In similar enough times to now, Haughey had an emphasis on providing employment.
“..People are looking for leadership, for the restoration of confidence and better management of their affairs..”
*A 6 page version of The Programme for National Recovery’ is posted here
The ‘Newsletter’ of Fianna Fail candidate Tim Cotter in the 1991 Local elections for Kildare County Council, Celbridge LEA. Cotter failed to win a seat.
Plenty in teh Newsletter though. A nice message from Charles J Haughey at the back.
Cotter is pictured canvassing happy looking workers at the INTEL plant. He also has shots with such luminaries as the then Lord Mayor of Dublin Michael Donnelly, Michael O’Kennedy, Bertie Ahern, Mary O’Rourke, Seamus Brennan and Ray Burke. Its a whos who of Fianna Fail at the time.
The boot is put into Labour too over Service Charges.
From the 1989 General Election Campaign, where Fianna Fail called an unneccessary election in the hope of gaining an overall majority. Lots here of interest although these lines…..
“FIANNA FAIL IS THE PARTY
Don’t Interupt its good work”
..take some beating.
Pictured under the corny heading of ‘Tuning in to a working majority’ greeting musicians are Charlie Haughey, Betty Coffey, Brian Hillery and David Andrews behind him. (as an aside if I’m correct and its Dun Laoghaire Shopping Centre in the picture…the escalator in view is where Georgie Burgess exclaims his love for Sharon in the Film ‘The Snapper’)
