From the 1982 Dublin West By-Election a leaflet from Fine Gael candidate Liam Skelly. Skelly won the by-election causing a sensation.
After the February 1982 General Election, Fianna Fail leader Charles Haughey was appointed Taoiseach. It was a minority government and so as to get an extra Fianna Fail seat, Haughey pulled a stroke appointing Fine Gael TD for Dublin West Dick Burke to the European Commission. The stroke backfired and that government lasted until November 1982. Skelly held his seat in November 1982 but later resigned the Fine Gael whip and polled poorly running as an Independent in 1987.

Not a political leaflet but something of Irish interest that I found at home recently. From the booklet for the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ireland in 1979,”Ireland Awaits Pope John Paul II- A Pastoral Letter from the Archbishops and Bishops of Ireland”.
The booklet contained all texts for the various masses that the Pope was to celebrate as well as other things too. I’m sure it will be appearing elsewhere in due course.

“..Property Tax is unfair and inequitable..” Leaflet from Olivia Mitchell -Fine Gael -Dublin South June 5, 2012

Another Anti Property Tax leaflet from Fine Gael in the mid 90s, this time from then Councillor and now TD for Dublin South, Olivia Mitchell.
The line
“This is an ill considered tax with no economic or social objective other than revenue raising for the government at the expense of those already struggling to provide for their families.”
Is as apt today as it was then.

Leaflet from Orla Guerin , Bernie Malone -Labour -1994 European Elections Dublin

From the 1994 European Elections Campaign a leaflet for Labour Party Dublin candidates Orla Guerin and Bernie Malone.
The sitting MEP Bernie Malone, who had been co-opted to replace Barry Desmond, had been selected at the Selection convention and was none too pleased when then RTE journalist Orla Guerin was added to the ticket. The addition, supposedly at Dick Springs request, caused friction within the party and between the candidates.. It was one of the most memorable campaigns for rivalry between candidates…. All sorts of rumours went around at the time.
In the end Malone held on to her seat and it was Guerin, despite polling well, who lost out.
Orla Guerin joined the BBC in 1995 and has worked there since. Bernie Malone lost her seat in 1999 after Proinsias de Rossa was added to the Labour ticket and De Rossa was easily elected.
