“A felon’s cap’s the noblest crown. An Irish head can wear.” Leaflet from Tom Mitchell -Sinn Fein -1956 Mid Ulster By-Election

From the 1956 Mid Ulster By-Election a leaflet from Sinn Fein candidate Tom Mitchell. The background to the by-election is fascinating, and you can see the reason the leaflet quotes the poem “The Felons of our land” with “A felon’s cap’s the noblest crown. An Irish head can wear.”
Mitchell polled 24,124 votes and lost the election.

The by-election held in Mid Ulster on 8 May 1956 was called because both candidates in the Mid Ulster by-election, 1955 were disqualified. Tom Mitchell was disqualified from assuming office because he was a convicted felon. Charles Beattie was awarded the seat but he was also disqualified because he held an office of profit under the Crown

From November 1934, poster advertising a Republican Congress protest at a rally addressed by Eoin O’Duffy in the Mansion House August 31, 2012

Many thanks to Brian Hanly and others for supplying the following info about the poster

from November 1934, a Republican Congress protest at a rally addressed by Eoin O’Duffy in the Mansion House. The Blueshirts had actually split by this stage so it was actually a ‘Fine-Gael’ splinter event! Congress propaganda against the Blueshirts tended to use both anti-fascist and Civil War motifs; so they would have accused the Blueshirts of being pro-British or pro-Empire. (In actual fact the Blueshirts tended to be the most nationalist/Michael Collins types within Fine Gael and had plenty of 1916-21 veterans among their officers). Anyway Frank Ryan and Peadar O’Donnell spoke at this I think.

77 was the number of Republican prisoners executed by the government during the Civil War.

1988 Cork May Day Leaflet August 26, 2012

Many thanks to the sender who notes…

A leaflet advertising the Cork May Day rally 1988. It was produced by that year’s Cork May Day committee ….
The committee was set up under the auspices of Cork Council of Trade Unions. While the leaflet was funded by the ITGWU, the committee worked independently and organised one of the most successful May Day events in Cork up to that date.
Interestingly the issues covered in the leaflet are still with us today – unemployment, health cuts, the taxation system and the need to defend workers rights. The leaflet came less than a year after the first “partnership” deal so from a historical context it is quite interesting.
