From the 2009 Local Elections for Wicklow County Council, longstanding Independent Councillor Jim Ruttle running in the Blessington LEA. Jim Ruttle was elected.
From the 1997 General Election in Dublin South, Richard Greene running for Muintir na hÉireann. The party may not have been registered at the time so Greene would have been classed as an Independent. Greene polled 1,431 votes and failed to win a seat.
It had been founded in 1994 and lasted a number of years. Although Richard Greene was a Councillor in 1997 , he had been initially elected as a Green Party councillor for Clonskeagh before a parting of ways. The party never had anyone elected. Emmanuel Sweeney who stood in the 2009 local and European Elections was also a member of the party.
Richard Greene is now known for his involvement in Coir.
It couldn’t be could it? Tony Clarke and Tony Clarke…..

From the 2007 General Election in Kildare North, Independent candidate Doctor John Corish.
Amongst his polices, he was looking for a 500 Bed Teaching Hospital in Naas and a New Medical School for NUI Maynooth.
He polled 234 votes.
From the 2004 European Elections Independent candidate Marian Harkin running in the North West constituency where she topped the poll. She is pictured with Pat Cox. She was a TD at the time and notice how her substitutes were Paudge Connolly and James Breen.

From the 2007 General Election in Dublin North, Independent candidate David O’Connor. The long serving councillor ‘a born and bred Fingal man’ polled 1,396 votes.
Interesting to see him decked out in the Dubs jersey in the leaflet, especially as one of his opponents was former Dublin goalkeeper John O’Leary running for Fianna Fail.

From the 2007 Seanad Elections, Former head of the TUI Paddy Healy who is currently chair of the National Public Services Alliance.
He has a long history of involvement with the Left and was a founding member of the League for a Workers’ Republic. He stood a number of Times for the Dail in Dublin North East, in 1981 he ran on a H Block ticket but was never elected to the Dail.
His Brother, Seamus Healy of the Clonmel based Workers and Unemployed Group (WUAG) spent between 2000 and 2007 in the Dail and is tipped by many for a return at the next election.

From the 2009 Local elections for Galway City Council, Independent candidate Aidan McCabe running in the Galway West Ward. Aidan McCabe received 56 votes and failed to be elected.

From the 2009 Local Elections in Kerry. Poll topper in Killorglin LEA, Michael Healy-Rae, son of the sitting TD Jackie Healy-Rae.
‘I earnestly ask for your NO 1 VOTE Please -or you next highest preference’ writes Michael.
The thing that also strikes me about the leaflet is that when reading it I can hear Michael Healy-Raes voice saying most of the text.
I also see that Michael is a member of the HSE.

From the 1992 General Election in Westmeath, Independent candidate Stephen Price.
An Abortion Referendum (Right to Travel , information etc) was held on the same day which led to quite a number of pro-life Independent candidates.
This in part due to Fianna Fail , which had been previously seen as Pro-Life falling out of step with SPUC and others. This in turn led to the setting up of
a number of Parties such as The Christian Principles Party, Christian Solidarity Party and The National Party.
Stephen Price polled 747 votes.
From the 2009 Local Elections. Independent candidate Marie Reddin who was unsuccessful in her attempt at winning a seat on Athone Town Council.

From the 2002 Seanad Elections Independent candidate Mike Cosgrave.
Founder of the greenpages.com amongst other things.

‘National Government -Our Only Hope’ wrote Independent candidate Thomas Sharkey running in the 1987 General Election in Dublin South.
Not many agreed with Thomas Sharkey as he polled 189 votes, even then getting more votes than 3 other candidates.
Two wonderful and unusual posters for Independent candidate Seamas O’Neill for the 2009 Local Elections in Dundrum.
Seamus O’Neill polled 603 votes and failed to be elected. Still his posters were very noticable for their uniqueness during the campaign.
(many thanks to Seamus O’Neill for sending me these at the time)

From the 2004 Local elections, Independent candidate Tom Crosby running in the Strokestown LEA for Roscommon County Council. Tom Crosby was initially elected as a Fianna Fail councillor in 1991. He has been re-elected to the council ever since.

From the 1985 local Elections in the Pembroke Ward, Independent Community Candidate Carmencita Hederman. The picture is of her going over the ‘new’ East Link bridge.
Carmencita Hederman was first elected to the council in 1974 and served until 1999. She was Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1987–88 during the Dublin Millennium celebrations. In 1989 she was elected to the Seanad for the University of Dublin Seat and served one term.
The Leaflet below gives an outline of her activities and career.
The picture on the bottom of the leaflet is of a building at the bottom of Eglington road (opposite Donnybrook Rugby ground). There was controversy when the building was built and given planning permission. This was then added to by the fact that once built the building could not find a tenant for a long period of time.
Her daughter Wendy Hederman was elected to the council for the Progressive Democrats in 2004.
