Joe Higgins- Militant Labour- (Leaflet 2) 1996 Dublin West By-Election December 15, 2009

Another Joe Higgins Leaflet from the 1996 Dublin West By-Election. This time Ballyfermot focused. It was the election that put Joe on the map, as he came close to winning the seat won by our current Finance Minister Brian Lenihan.
He asks Voters to vote for him and ‘Other Genuine Left Wing Candidates’ which is fairly uncommon.
We also learn that in 1996 a TD earned £32,000 a year. In 1983 it was £16,400 a year .What is it now?

“Party Pizzas! -The Election Selection” -John O’Neill -Irish Socialist Network 2007 December 8, 2009

This is the back of a 4 page leaflet issued by the Irish Socialist Network for the 2007 General Election campaign of John O’Neill.
Fantastic imagination, playing on the fact that election material is so often mixed in with Pizza Menus… and often the Pizza Menu is more popular!

There are many gimmicks to get a voter to hold on to your leaflet, it may list telephone numbers of local services, be a fridge magnet calendar , a sporting fixtures guide, a match programme….. and then there’s the quiz!

A nice picture of yourself on the front and A Quiz where you also sneak yourself in as two of the answers on the back!

Kildare Labour News- December 1989- Stagg, Howlin ,Kemmy October 2, 2009

This is an interesting little pamphlet where we have a Labour party ‘a socialist alternative’. Very much of its time in both the articles on the falling of Communism, The National Question, our Health Service, Women at Work and also the ads.
It also features some of the late Jim Kemmys poetry.
Click on the images if you have difficulty seeing the whole page.

Tony Clarke -Independent Socialist – Dun Laoghaire Nov 1982. September 22, 2009

Tony Clarke Independent Socialist Dun Laoghaire November 1982.  Although the fashion may be out of date, some of his ideas were slightly ahead of their time. Equal rights for Fathers wasn’t something talked about much then , at least openly anyhow. The salaries of TDs is a common complaint and of course the demand for Irish Unity was mainstream at the time. A demand too for a Divorce Referendum…. He polled 205 votes.

This is the literature of Grace Lally who stood in the Rathmines Ward.  Contains information on the candidate, the SWP Election Manifesto and of course the “Get Involved” form too.
